Holy fuck if you found a short board thats a holy grail.

But boys and i have always stayed true to the good ol 8 ft storm. When we surf shorebreak or waves are bad, rip around on em. Things will not break. And you can snap it in half and exchange it at costco no questions asked.

I just saw your budget was around 500. Get a wavestorm, get your feet under you and then spend the remaining 400 or whatever on a used board after you learn.

I agree with him. Buying an expensive/short board to learn on isn't great... Better to get a cheapo and save up for something decent new or used to step up to when you get the hang of it.

What are your opinions on fish boards? I've heard they are a good in between of long and short boards. Easier to catch waves and paddle, but also more maneuverable/versatile than a long board.

They are pretty widely liked, never had one myself. I hear they are pretty stable and keep speed on smaller weaker waves, can be tons of fun. Long boards are easy to catch small waves and paddle and also stable but lack the mobility. Short boards are definitely the least stable with a tough learning curve, yet are probably the quickest and easy to maneuver. But, I've only been surfing for like 2 years so I don't really know jack.

Yeah, I've heard good things so that's why I asked. I'm gonna be on the west coast a bit this summer, and probably surf a few days. I think I'll just rent a long board 1 day and then a hybrid/fish the next day, and see which one I'm most comfortable on, and hopefully surf it for the rest of the summer.

That's definitely a good idea. Have fun out there, bring a wet suit hahah.

Fishes are fun. Drivey fast n stable. You honestly won't have too much fun shortboarding off the bat. I ride a classic style single fin log almost every day, not like a 2+1 high performance board. It's so damn fun to cross step and nose ride, do hacks and surf bigger waves on it too

Fish is a really broad term now. Most people don't mean a twin keel retro fish, but a shorter, fatter, sort of shortboard-y but not quite high performance shortboard type of craft. Either way they're wider, flatter and quite useful. I'm a big fan of boards like the firewire baked potato, lost puddle jumper and stuff like that. They can be ridden quite short but remain useful as long as the rider knows how to catch waves. Longboards are super fun too... Basically, surfing is super fun regardless. Just get on something and get waves.

I went yesterday and got sent over the falls so bad like three times in a row. My break has developed this vicious section at low tide where the wave grows like crazy and gets super steep.

Went today. Getting closer to not antarctic conditions here. Also tried my board that normally runs a twin and trailer setup as a regular thruster. Interesting for sure. Definitely worth a few more tries.

If you live on the Jersey Shore, the next two days look like a lot of fun. Hope it shapes up to be a good little swell.

I get off work at four tomorrow. Hoping the winds don't straight up blow it out.

I had a shit ton of fun last saturday too. Super warm, just me and another dude sharing waves. I wasn't gonna go because that crazy thunderstorm but I woke up early and went. My spot is actually quite good at high tide, or at least it was for those two hours or so.

Anyone want to go camping in Tofino with me? Haha. Think I'm gonna head to watch the Rip Curl Pro next week. Haven't been surfing in too long

Hell yeah, I'll have to get out and shoot. Where in Jersey? I live down here in Holgate, LBI

Today was incredible! Surfed in Bayhead NJ and it was so sick, sand was really shallow which made it ridiculously heavy. Caught some of the best barrels I've had in a while.

Wasn't anything special in Beach Haven or Holgate. Few nice peelers, but for the most part they weren't closing out nicely. This morning it was extremely clean at Holyoke, but the waves looked pretty small. Hopefully this weekend brings the goods. If any of you guys are ever in the LBI area and want a photog definitely pm me. I'm always up to shoot, meet new people, and hang loose.

Nice, I'm a photographer too. Surfed at Holyoke once and it was tons of fun.

I'd be out there too if I didn't have a bum shoulder hahah.

Holyoke during Stella was absolutely unreal, sat there for an hour just to watch. I missed the Surfline guys up in Cedars, didn't realize they were there until they left.

I surf Bradley. It was so good. Strong offshores held the waves open. I basically got called into a great one by everybody because it came right to me and after a few pumps threw down a hard backside hack. It felt great. I pushed so hard, stalled in the lip then got both my hands in the water to recover, then dropped back down and kept going. The winds nearly shut off at 6:30 and it got kinda glassy. Only issue was the current. I swear I paddled south for 2 hours straight barely held my position.

Not any good barrels though, even as the tide dropped. I tried to squeeze into a left barrel but it wasn't happening. I'm a small dude too so if I didn't fit nobody would.

Just saw Under an Arctic Sky by Chris Burkard at one of his premieres. Such a rad movie. Definitely worth it to watch if you get a chance. Also met him super nice guy.

Tomorrow, anybody? East coast? Surfline's thing says very good. I don't think it'll be head high, but consistent shoulder or chest would be great.

It ended up being incredible at Bay head, over 50 guys out. I surfed for 7 hours

Just got back from a two week surf trip in the Mentawai Islands. Fucking incredible. Just a few pictures. Didn't get an massive swell but still good to surf constant 2-5 foot perfect waves. :) 872096.jpeg

Jeebus... So good. Meanwhile I've been watching J bay, which looked fantastic on that first day, then going to grovel for max waist high windchop. Kelly Slater broke his foot or something too.

I'm thinking of shaping another board. It'd basically be the final evolution of my small wave stubby thing. After several years of riding two different versions of it, I think I know what it needs. I also rode a quad the other day that I actually liked, so I want to put 5 boxes in this time and try that out.

I'm about to buy a catch surf beater when I get home from vacation, my friend recently got one and they look like so much fun I'm so hyped

Swell from yesterday morning in LBI, NJ.

Hopefully more tropical storms to come before I move out to Breck in October.

How early was all that? It was quite large here in central Nj, so I heard. I was at work but I got out late. Few head high sets then it quickly got smaller, chest high max.

Was at 6 to 8am on Weds in Surf City. Apparently the evening and night before were even better.

Speaking of instagram, Kelly Slater was supposedly here in NJ getting toobed. Hard to tell if it's him since they have a hood on. Sounds like I should have skipped work.

booking flights to aus tomorrow and will be stopping in hawaii on the way to go watch the pipemasters. i am hyped

Didn't realize you could surf lake tahoe. Especially on mellow days. Was down by the beach and saw a decent small wave come in. Was like wut, nah, maybe, idk, nah, now way. Then when I was rolling out I saw a guy come up in his wetsuit to throw his board in his truck and chatted to him a bit.

Yeah, dunno if you've been to AUS but someone has actually surfed lake Jindabyne. So fucked up you would never expect it.

I went once but only for a week. Not familiar with the lake but Ill look it up. People surf the great lakes all the time but those things are bigger than several countries so its almost not fair.

Yeah seen clips of Dane Gudauskas getting barrelled in the great lakes. Lake Jindy however, is quite a small lake.

Pipe's on and it's turning into an airshow. Fun to watch. Medina may or may not lose to Josh Kerr in the next 5 minutes.

Yeah and John John was lucky to make he's heat. I thought Ewing got robbed there.

Lucky again, too. Barrel to air in the dying seconds. I didn't think he'd get that one, as good as that wave was, just cause they'd been so stingy with points. Final's about to be on.

Edit JFLOOOOO. Stolen literally at the last seconds. Legit speech too.

Has anyone surfed in Puerto Viejo Costa Rica along the Caribbean coast? I'm looking to spend 1-2 months there (Feb-March) followed by a month in Bocas after.

after a month dry spell it looks like we are gonna get some waves next week in east aus!

Likewise, but in east coast USA. Although it hasn't been totally flat here. We had that winter storm that made the slush wave clips and pictures which are circulating throughout surf media. Does it even get cold there? Like 5mm suit, hood, mittens, boots, ice chunks in the water cold? Or is it like "warm climate" cold?

Yeah aye. Wind is a bit southerly though. My local is in need of a south swell cos the banks are shit as.
