Also, it's been like 2 fucking months since I ordered my Flying Pony and they still haven't even made it. Fuck it im gonna cancel the order.

And frothing on this 7 foot mini mall at the momment. So much fun

Anybody have any experience with these sorts of things.

Was thinking of getting one to stretch my 4mm a bit longer before going to 5mm, and so I don't have to wear a 5 when I can do a 4 and hood in spring. Does wearing one let water in the top where the suit closes or something? That's my main concern.

Yeah I actually just got one to extend the range of my 4/3 too...I like it!

idk if you've had the chance to check one out in person, because its hard to see in that picture, but basically the neck has an inner lining (shirt) plus a neoprene flap on top so it makes a pretty good seal. Was just out in NJ this week with it, no problem with flushing or anything. Toasty warm :-)

I actually bought that one but with long sleeves at brave new world over black friday weekend during whatever sale they had. Unfortunately I've been at work for the past two swells that land in the middle of the week so I haven't gotten to try it. Now it's like super cold though so I might just go for my 5mm.

I met Elle and Holly Coffey. Fuck me they're stunners

I bought those wetsuit socks or whatever you're gonna call them since everything in the shop was 40% off. They're actually so helpful. It's so much easier to put boots on with them, and the suit in general actually. Definitely good for when you're so excited to get in the water that you can't get the boots on fast enough.

Was logging blackies today in newport, super fun session such a nice day then stepped on a fucking stingray, fucker got me right on the arch of my foot. Such a weird feeling getting stung but honestly hurt way less than i expected

Casual stingray encounter, NBD. Hope it's not too bad!

Don't they have venom or something? Gotta watch out for infection too. Probably some crazy bacteria in the water/on the rays.

We might have waves for the first day of the new year too. Should be fun.

Yeah my buddy who i was surfing with is a lifeguard and i guess its just like a huge bee sting

We've had pretty fun waves here at home, at least as far as summer goes in Coffs Harbour (Aus). Here's a couple of shots a friend grabbed for me last week. Cool to see a surfing chat and ready the funny stuff ski nuts say about it on NS. Here's to a swell-filled autumn and a snow filled winter!

The last week has been surprisingly consistent here in nova scotia. Had one morning session that was glassy 7-10 ft and occasional barreling sections. Now i gotta go back to school which is ass.

7-10ft? You guys are getting hollow waves 3 times head height? Dude, the North Shore of Oahu would be frothing a swell like that.

Yeah boys, new stick finally came in. Thing is fucking insane. 5,3 by 20.5 by 2 and 7/16. at 30L. In fucking HyFi. I'm telling ya, get some hyfi or carbon wrap under your arm today for those small 1-3,4 foot waves and surfing will be on another level. Frothing so hard.

not exactly sure how you measure waves but over here its from the base to the crest on the breaking face. 7 Feet is only like a foot and a half overhead and 10 is less than double overhead. And I'm talking crouching barrels in the pit of the wave, not long hollow pipes. It was just a fun session that I was stoked on, NS is a fickle spot so we get stoked when we get some swell. I won't post a million pics because you can just google it but heres one that shows how big it can get:

Right that makes sense, most parts of the surfing world ie Australia (where I'm from), much of the continental US or Hawaii measure the wave the way an oceanographer measures swell, that is to say, from the back of the wave so that the trough isn't counted. A general rule of thumb is that the swell will be around half the size of the wave face. That's why when you said 7-10, i was imagining barrels with 14-20ft faces haha

When I explain to people I usually talk about face size, so I'll tell them after I dropped in and bottom turned the wave was overhead or shoulder high or whatever. But I know they measure the back of the wave when they talk about it. It's just weird to explain it that way since you can have low numbers produce head high or bigger waves at some spots.

Apparently it was good but super cold here in NJ today. I was dealing with an exploded water heater instead. Still got wet I suppose.

Wetsuit buying advice?

I live in maine and want to surf year round. Are there any places I should shop? Brands? thickness recomendations? If you had to pick one suit to get what would it be and why?

Also wondering if there is any surfing etiquette I should be aware of before I get out there.

Ask in a surf shop up there. I'd imagine it's really fucking cold there though. 5mm must be minimum most of the year. I've never been that far north to surf. It gets cold here in NJ, but, it's gotta be worse there. As far as the actual suit, try a few on. It has to fit if it's that cold. Xcels fit me nicely. They might not fit you as well.

Etiquette? Lots, but just don't be a dick and you'll be fine. I feel like there's not tons of surfers there so they're all a cool bunch but who knows.

I'm not an expert in this field, but I just got a new 5/4 Flashbomb after using an excel infiniti for a couple years, and so far it feels heaps better than the old one.

Just rode my 6'2 shortboard I bought a few weeks ago for the first time. Let's just say it was an... interesting experience. I'm super stoked about it though, and I can't wait for the next decent swell (possibly this Saturday?) so I can keep trying to progress and actually stand up on it. It's a sick custom carbon fiber board I picked up at one of my local shops, Sweetwater Surf Shop in Wrightsville Beach, NC, for a mere $150 barely used with new futures fins. (before yall roast me for the benz it's my mom's car not mine)

Oh yeah, I also bought a $65 dakine board bag on amazon and I guess someone fucked up and shipped me 4 bags when I only paid for 1. Selling the extras on craigslist to make that bank haha

Wish my rotator cuff wasn't fucked up so I could get in the water. Been stuck on shore shooting since October. Missing the best season in Jersey.

I live and surf in Holgate, Long Beach Island. Wooden Jetty, Beach 3, and Holyoke are the favorite spots. How about you?

Babes and Barrels all day hahah

Kinda bummed cause it has been fucken cranking at home but skiin pow is all good...I need a 6-7' single fin this summer it has to happen. I'd sell a kidney for a lovelace v.bowls but then i couldn't drink as much beer

Ha i feel like everybody surfs south jerz. Mainly bradley, asbury and that area. Occasionally i'll venture to manasquan in the winter since it's insane in the summer, or further south. Rarely I'll hit LBI.

I hardly leave the island to surf. Sometimes I'll venture to Cape May or Avalon, but lbi has decent waves if there is swell. No reason to leave lol

Watching Pipe pro rn and damn John John is good.. The dude makes it look so damn easy.

Also planning a trip to central America for May. Anyone have any experience? Thinking probably Costa Rica. Any info on spots to go, places to stay would be appreciated. Also currently only have a groveler, and looking to possibly pick up a new board for the trip. Should I try and get one there or pickup one before I leave? should I even bother bringing my board? My girlfriend is also coming so i was thinking it would make sense to bring 2 or 3 shortboards that we are comfortable with.

dub post

Theres currently a used Hypto Krypto for sale locally, thinking about giving it a shot. anyone surfed it before? worth taking for the trip?

I've spent a couple of Mays in costa and nica, We had great swell one time and pretty solid the other not even sure when its supposed to be good down there but it was for us both years. Costa's rad, super easy to travel everywhere and insane beach breaks everywhere, from my experience you can't really go wrong. My favorites were santa teresa and nosara both in northern CR and also hermosa right next to Jaco, never ventured down to pavones but heard its sick and also crowded. We always bought boards in Jaco for fairly cheap and sold them before we left but I think if i went again i'd wanna bring my own board, depends on how long you're going though. I've actually also got a 5'8 hypto, hopped on the band wagon. I absolutely love it, really hard to surf my other boards now, Super fast and versatile, exactly the kinda board you'd wanna bring on a surf trip where you messing with different breaks. Although for every person that loves them there's someone that says they're shit boards so who knows.

I mean ando ripped like a 5'6" hypto at 10-12 foot kanduis so i'm sure you'll like it. Comes at the risk of looking like a plastic surgeon who wanted to be progressive

Supposed to be decent tomorrow. I'm getting it early before work. Gonna be (relatively) warm.

It's supposed to be like 60 tomorrow, unreasonably warm in Feb. Then Thurs we are getting down to 17 and 6inches.. Ridiculous weather. I can't surf cause of my rotator cuff, but I may go shoot early.

Holy shit, how about this come back story from Owen. 14 months after sustaining a head injury at pipe. Owen is back into a final at his first ever CT stop back. This is so emotional.

So stoked to have my first big overnight surf trip in a couple weekends! Going down to a friends house in RI. Gonna surf each day and party each night! Gonna be so much fun

So anybody else sitting here and hitting refresh on the WSL page? Waiting to see Kely, Mick and Leo in huge North Point or whatever it's called. Says march 28 5:30pm mountain time so they're late.

Yeah I'm hoping for the box. Main break is like a huge mush mountain of foam.

In other news I'm so ready for not 5mm weather. Gonna try wearing my 4mm wednesday I hope.

I'm looking to get into surfing this summer and need some recommendations. I'm technically a beginner, however I feel like I will pick it up pretty fast so I think a board that suits maybe an intermediate would be best. I'm 5'10, 135 lbs. I definitely want something that's turny and playful. I would be surfing on the east coast only, so waves probably wouldn't ever be bigger than head height. Also do you guys have any new England surf spot recommendations? I'll be down at the Cape a lot and would love to be able to surf down there. Safety is the number one priority for me tho.

Get a wavestorm. Seriously most fun you will ever have on a board

I picked up a Super Fling to learn on and I've enjoyed it for the past year or so. I still suck balls at it, hurt my rotator cuff back in october and can't really paddle still. All my friends that are good keep dogging me to let them use/buy it off me.

I'm 5'10 150lbs and the board is 5'8", 20 1/2" wide, 2 3/4" thick, and 35 liters volume

Those look sick! $750 is a bit pricey for me tho. Know of anywhere I could get it used or just cheaper? My budget is at or below $500.

The swallow tail or the long board? Would it be durable? 100 bucks seems pretty cheap.

Holy fuck if you found a short board thats a holy grail.

But boys and i have always stayed true to the good ol 8 ft storm. When we surf shorebreak or waves are bad, rip around on em. Things will not break. And you can snap it in half and exchange it at costco no questions asked.

I just saw your budget was around 500. Get a wavestorm, get your feet under you and then spend the remaining 400 or whatever on a used board after you learn.

I love it, but definitely not cheap. Craigslist maybe, facebook groups, not totally sure. The shops here kill you with their prices, at least it came with 5 nice futures.

I agree with him. Buying an expensive/short board to learn on isn't great... Better to get a cheapo and save up for something decent new or used to step up to when you get the hang of it.
