What wetsuits are people running?

I plan on doing a lot more surfing this winter, and im in the market for a new suit.

I'm currently using an Xcel infiniti hooded 4/3 as my only suit. Its been ok in the summer, but a little on the cold side throughout the winter as the water temps im usually dealing with are between mid 40s and mid 50s. Also the things falling apart on me pretty good, ive had it for a year and a bit, and put some serious mileage on it, and id like to think its normal wear and tear, but id have to admit durability isnt great.

if anyone has any suggestions, id like to hear what everyone else prefers.

Rip Curl wetsuits are by far the best. Stretchiest neoprene, and fleece lining. And they're the warmest. Defiently worth the investment.

I got a rip curl 5/4 flashbomb and I must say its been a pleasure to surf in. Haven't been cold once even for 4+ hour sessions. That being said I love throwing on the 4/3 when it's warm enough, it's so much easier to paddle with.

Tape hand warmers all over your body
 
I had an amazing session on sunday, until I got out and realized somebody had taken my bag off the beach. They got my car keys and phone among other things. I've left my bag and boards on the beach every time I surfed ever, as have everybody else that surfs there. Guess I won't be doing that ever again. What do you guys do with your keys? Key pocket on leash or wetsuit? Classic hidden on the car somewhere?

Anyway, it was like shoulder high, no wind, sunset, warm water... So many fish that it was like surfing in an aquarium. When I'd duckdive I'd open my eyes and I wish I had a gopro photo of what you could see. Got one wave with two backside turns that felt great, ones where you get stuck up in the lip for a second after releasing the fins then drop back down. Fall is looking good so far.

i never leave stuff on the beach, unless its with people. i always hide my keys near my car. or just leave them in the ignition. never had a problem, but i try to avoid congested beaches anyway.

Nice man! I've only gotten in the water once since July 1st, and that was early September. Fun swell but crowded over Labor Day weekend. Definitely been tricky with work lately!
 
30mph off shore winds. shoulder high waves that would stand up forever. If the smallest splash wasn't blinding you it was super fun. Just enough of a cross wind that it was pushing you super fast down the wave. It was my first successful backside wave on a shallow wave!

Well it was much flatter than expected, didnt even ride my log and just pulled into 3foot shorey closeouts instead on a storm, still mucho fun
 
I kinda want to buy a foamie for that purpose. Fun at high tide when it's breaking right on the beach.

I should have went this morning. Rainy and gray but little to no wind and chest high. I felt sick though and watched the France contest instead, although in retrospect I just felt phlegmy and the salt might have helped that.
 
nice groundswell from Nicole leftovers in MA over the weekend. Hope everyone got something out of the storm-fun to check of some new and old spots in the neighborhood!
 
Just did a road trip up the coast of Ireland. Holy fucking shit, Sligo, Claire and Donegal were absolutely going off. Massive barrels every 1/2 mile in Sligo that have one or two people on them each. I've never seen anything like that in my life.

It was good here in NJ saturday morning. Strong offshores but big enough waves to actually benefit from that. Luckily I was at work... And now it's back to lake atlantic status.

Have you seen those new wetsuits that are supposed to be like otter fur or something? Not actually made of otter fur but made of some kind of fur I think. Supposed to be high tech

from the people at MIT? I've looked into it a little bit. Will probably be better for the people in super cold places. Right now I can get through winter in a 2/2 flashbomb.

I saw that as well. Interesting concept for sure, although I wonder how they're going to make it practical, mass producable (not that that's a word) and durable. Unless it's already made of some tough fiber. I think it's got something to do with the arrangement of the fur or whatever in addition to what it's made of. Would be nice when it's 30 degrees and the water's 30 as well. There were a few days last winter where I wasn't sure I'd make it back to my car.

Where are you surfing that you can get by with a 2mil? Its not even December yet, and im freezing my nuts off in my 4/3; Doesn't help that its covered in holes.

Torn between both. Surfing is amazing.

I think it can be similar to skateboarding for a lot of people in that the basics are very difficult. I'd been skateboarding forever when I picked up surfing so I didn't have too difficult of a time. But if you have no board sport experience it'll probably be hard. Even then, you need to learn to read waves and all that plus how to handle a surfboard, which is totally different than a skateboard most of the time.

Basically there's people at my usual spot who I've seen there for several years and they still can't reliably catch waves, and there's people who've gotten better but they're not great or anything. It is about fun though and even plain riding waves is fun. You don't need to be doing crazy airs and turns to have fun.

I see. I always hated trying to progress in skating b/c you fall straight to concrete. IMO easier to progress and be more aggressive if your falling into ocean or snow. Even ice on skis i'd rather fall into that concrete skating. Plus I've always known how to fall on skis.

On surfboard unless ur on bigger waves are the falls pretty manageable as long as you avoid getting hit by your own board?

been surfing for 10 years and only been hit by my board twice. It's pretty hard considering the wave will usually be pulled harder than you because it's full of air and floats easier than you.

I've only ever been hit by it like twice or three times. The only time it ever hurt was when I was more or less nutted by it, except it missed everything and just hit like the bone or whatever else is there. That hurt.

As long as you don't hit the bottom by accident you're fine. If it's more shallow than you think and you jump or fall into the water you won't be ready to hit something hard. But still, that rarely happens to me and it's never been serious. I just know sometimes people get hurt that way. One time in bigger, winter barrels we had to have an ambulance come because some guy hurt his neck hitting the bottom, but that was big waves in shallow water.
 
Rip curl Vancouver put on a sample sale this weekend, and i copped a new flashbomb. seems super nice, the E5 lining is pretty dope, and this thing was dirt cheap. Cant wait to try it out.

Been absolutely frothing in the smallest, shittest surf recently. I've definitely got the bug for surfing back. Also been noticing a bit of progression with my turns as well, but I still bog rail more than I'd like.

Not to mention I'm moving to Melbourne next year so Bells will be accessible...biggest I've surfed is 8ft and that was one of the scariest (but most fun) surfs of my life. Kind of nervous for what's in store...

Bells looks like such a manageable wave when it's big. Rarely we'll get a somewhat slow moving wave that's overhead or bigger here in NJ. A lot of the time if it's big, extremely fast moving and going to destroy you when it closes out in five inches of water, 2 seconds after you dropped in. Bells looks so slow and not cliff-like unless it's like excessively huge.

Of course everything looks different on video.
 
fuuuck anyone else see Griffin colapintos reverse lip hack thing? Insane. Cool to surf tstreet and what not when he's in the water and then watch him do that

Heard it was insane and just saw it. He was like inverted before he even got any air.

I had like an hour of perfect chest-shoulder high rights this morning all to myself. It'd just get one, walk back to the jetty and ride the conveyer belt style rip current back to the lineup. Easiest thing ever.

Also I was waiting for a wave, spun around and saw this rather large, like 5-6ft tan or gray blob. For like half a second I was like fuuuuuuuuuuuuu that's a huge fish or a shark or something but then I realized it was a plastic bag. Apparently there was a whale here last week too.

Fuuuck dude I've been sharked out like that before too. Idk if you or anyone else has heard of san onofre, but very classic log spot, was where chuck pattersons famous clip of him fiming a great white on the end of his paddle was shot

Anyways, i usually log, and surf sano 2-3 times a week. The warm water from the nuclear power plant is a hotspot for juvenile white sharks, and man i get spooked at least once a week. So scary
 
Surfing next to a nuke plant must be interesting.

Anybody have any experience with these sorts of things.

Was thinking of getting one to stretch my 4mm a bit longer before going to 5mm, and so I don't have to wear a 5 when I can do a 4 and hood in spring. Does wearing one let water in the top where the suit closes or something? That's my main concern.
 
Flew home for the weekend and got to be back in the water, first session was a beautiful sunny day on the log, everyone needs a big soft rail single fin in their life, seriously. Next day was a big wavestorm session with the boys in sideways rain, big stormy closeouts were fun. Back in idaho where nothings open yet, fuck
