Official Gear Rumor Thread

Skis certainly aren't for NS, but boots may fit someone.

Dalbello and Volkl.

Volkl ain’t care. Those are carving skis for Jerry. I will admit that an abundance of QR codes do make a great camo, which must have been the desired effect.

Def a camo to hide what one can guess are the RTMs. Those boots look oddly hideous for being dalbello tho

Probably the case. But you don’t think they are more likely the code UVO

Not sure how I feel about them. They're very...white

Haha I agree! That seems to be the trend though, all the new gear is going white. Salomon NFX are white as well. Being colorblind I’m afraid I’ll loose the damn things lol

Chris' ski keeps the same dimensions/sizing, but gets a full revamp otherwise. Really cool updates coming!!

Why would he be skiing a ghost on a pin binding, wasn't the ghost downhill freeride, no walk mode?

Part of my curiosity but someone over on TGR mentioned that the Ghost Max models could take the Quest soles (OneNerdyKid may be able to confirm since Amer sports connection/general boot knowledge).

I suppose that makes sense, but it just seems like a weird pairing to me

Because you don't ski down with the pins in this binding. It's a normal downhill binding in this regard.

If he got heli-ed up or boot-packed or just skied over to this area, etc. then he can just use a normal, alpine-norm ski boot.

Remember- this binding is not just for touring. You don't need to use a touring boot with it.

Fair enough. Is the shift really that good? Like get rid of your downhill bindings this is all you need good? Cuz I'm a bit hesitant to believe that

Which I understand, it's a big claim. But it's real (as long as you aren't truly seeking a DIN above 13). It might not replace a park-only setup, but that's not its purpose either. All mountain, freeride, go anywhere type of skiing is what this is made for.

About a month ago, I had NS photog grantwhitty take a spin on them in Vail, when it was bullet-proof. You can PM him and ask him his unbiased thoughts about it.

I have a friend who just got the Ultra XTD and he's thinking about getting the King Pin, I tried to sell him on the Shift but he wasn't really convinced (he loves the idea but thinks it looks too heavy for real touring).

Total Kingpin 13 weight is 1549g (from Blister), Shift 13 is 1732g. That's 183g total weight difference, about a 90g difference per side. If the Shift is too heavy for real touring, then so should be Kingpin.

It just depends if your friend favors downhill skiing performance/alpine safety/elastic travel/bump absorption vs. that small weight penalty. The Shift is also a binding you can literally run as a daily resort driver. I'm not trying to bash their product, but from what I've seen the Kingpin doesn't like to handle constant resort skiing.

But ultimately, if your friend wants a binding right now, then the Shift isn't an option.

As ONK said above, if he's going for the kingpin weight isn't his primary concern.

That being said, the limited data on the durability and more importantly availability of the Shift is a hindrance so if he wants a binding now, Kingpin is the way to go.

I'm hoping to get a pair of the Shifts in 2019-2020 when I'm due for a new pair of touring skis.

Gives me some time to see how people enjoy them/what other companies bring to the table by then as well.

Shift is a freeride binding. Not a touring binding. The Kingpin is an aggressive touring binding. It has two climb bar heights. You don’t have to take it off to go from touring to ski mode.

For touring on wide skis (110 or above) it is still the best option IMO.

The shift brings some improved safety from an arbitrary standpoint, as well as improved downhill performance, but really is the evolution of the Duke and Gauridan, not the King Pin. YMMV.

It will undoubtedly take some King Pin sales however, as many folks have replaced their Dukes with KingPins.

how long will K2 run with the retro graphics before they get an actual graphic artist?

no shit. so corny. soon they're going to be looking at older graphics to style a "throwback" after and realize they havent had an original graphic in 20 years

Tbh I'm just glad they got over their punk rocker skulls and hell horses phase. Shit got old

Ironically, I think K2’s are finally starting to look like they are supposed to again. I like the “new” looks. Now....when does the Enemy make it’s return???

I currently ski the old ghost 130 with quest pin tech toe and heel pads in. I don't really like walk mode boots, and honestly the ghost has a very upright stance to previous boots I've been on (dalbello and full tilt mostly) so I really don't mind it on the uphill. It's nice to be skiing in a full charger boot, especially when backcountry conditions are more variable.

Looks kind of bibbyish with the tip shape, could it be a slimmed down Bibby? I could be wrong though

New ski for the lineup, essentially replacing the Tahoe 106, stay tuned for details.

We already have a slimmed down Bibby in the PB&J.

Hell yes! Eagerly anticipating details! I just got on the 189 Wrenegade 108s this season, and starting to like them more than my Belafontes as a daily driver at mammoth. Hope this new ski is a contender! Can you tease us with widths or anything else?

The shift looks awesome. Hopefully i'll get to try it out soon. It's going to be so much better than a frame binding. Honestly can't see any reason to get the 13 din guardian anymore.

It’s a MTN s/Lab with the whistler mods

Yeah it seems him, Cody, and a few others still rock the boots they built at Salomon a few years back.

I wonder if Salomon will actually take into consideration their mods for these changes.

It seems a lot of athletes are doing them.
