Newschoolers App Beta Feedback Thread

I have an idea

like an instagram type of thing but for skiing pictures

That is sort of what we went with for the photo section. It's still pretty basic but check it out once you get into the beta.

Have you tried photos in the app yet?

would love feedback on it.

Only thing I'd have to say so far is that it'd be cool to be able to comment on videos without having to click on them.

Other than that the app I'm stoked on the app. This will be really good for NS and for ski media in general

Yeah we might add that ability. If you look directly in the video section you can see that we've worked on a display where the top two comments show under the video. Still can't comment there but it would be relatively easy to add.

My post was sort of misleading :( I haven't been emailed yet, I don't have the app yet

Ah right! If you signed up for an invite quickly one should open up for you this week.

So far loving the app. Super smooth and laid out well. Very familiar navigation, much like the site outside of the browser.

Being that I spend most of my time on the fourms I dont have much feedback outside of that. One thing I noticed that is missing is the link on the bottom of threads that takes you back to the main fourm showing the threads. Just makes it easier to navigate back to the list of threads.

Does the android back button not do that for you? On iOS it basically does that... but I'll check into it on android. You're just talking about that Blue link that says "Forums" yes?

Specifically where it says site discussion. Usually the Android back button will work and has for me. But when I load the app from a notification, the back button will take me to whereever I was last in the app. It will also happens that way when I load from an alert in app or notification.

Ah yes - this is a bit of a difficulty with the way apps navigate by default. We tried to rip everything possible out of it to avoid over-complication, but we are conscious of the fact that there's a touch of missing navigation.

So basically the issue here is when you go to a notification, make a post (like in this thread) and it returns you to the specific thread - you want to be able to get back to that forum's thread listing?

Sidebar: Can you try out the search a bit and post your findings? We actually made some improvements to it, but they're only available in-app currently. Would be curious to see how it works for you.

Exactly. That's is how I tend to navigate through the forums. Sometimes Ill get pulled to a thread in one of the cult forums like Ladies Men and then want to see any other threads in that cult. Cant get to them easily once in the thread.

Ill play with search today and let you know.

Ok - definitely know we need to play around with forum navigation. Will put this on the list.

Please do fuck around with search. Would love if others could do it as well. It's still not great - don't try to find anything more than about 16 months old.

However if these improvements actually make it a bit more useful of a tool and you find it a helpful part of Newschoolers... we have a whole bunch more things we can start adding to the back end to make it much more powerful.

For search, given Ive only done one search but just posting my thoughts on browser vs app. In the app it appears to post the most recent posts with the words used. I searched "Fantasy Football" because I figured it was specific enough and recent enough that my most recent thread for the NS league should come up. Which it did in the app, maybe the 5th option? The ones before it were threads that just had variations of the words fantasy and football but nothing related to FFB. So it worked better than the browser but still doesnt appear to be knowing what the user is searching for.

Compared to in the browser it shows a bunch of threads about FFB but nothing that is recent. So it knows what Im looking for but has no recent threads.

Ill keep searching but FFB was the first thing I could remember that would be recent and specific enough.

It certainly has limitations still - big ones. I'd call the old search a -10 out of 10, whereas this new thing is maybe 4 on 10.

Interpreting what the user wants is difficult, but we're onto something which just might work somewhat. We'll never be able to beat Google, but in-app you can't google search so early on in this process we realized we needed to make some drastic moves on Search.

Try to just use it naturally.... as in don't be scared to search if you want to find something. At least when you're in the app, there's a chance you might actually find it.

Please keep posting findings, we're also logging all the search terms that go in so we can better study what people are looking for.

Side note, not sure if said already or not, but on Android the app title is super long but in the app store it just shows as "Newschoolers"

See below for as it reads in my app list.

866187.png

Was that intentional? If so my two cents is to just have it read as Newschoolers on the phone.

Its supposed to read Newschoolers on the phone, we'll look into that.

I'm really really impressed. Sometimes the hybrid HTML/native apps can have laggy scroll and bad draw times, but this feels super native and snappy. Very full featured too which I love.

Awesome job!

Are you mostly in bug fixing mode, or are there more features you'd like to add before releasing?

If possible, it would be nice to reduce the amount of data this thing downloads because some of us have limited data and safari uses a lot less data on the website than using the app I have noticed. Maybe just don't preload as many things.

Just started trying it and I've to say it works pretty well. I like the scrolling view and the way the photos and videos sections are. Pretty sure a lot of pics will get a lot more of visibility with this Instagram style. I will keep you updated, but props to you NS, this is sick

Loving the app so much!! I'm stoked! Only thing I've seen so far is that I would like to be able to see post count under the member's name, like usual. Helpful in spotting newbs. Otherwise it's extremely hard to tell, unless you memorize all the names (pro, insane, etc)

That is going to be a balance for us here... some of the speed we were able to get is because of the preloading. Obviously we want this to be as minimal as possible, but we did have to trade off data usage for speed currently. We'll keep optimizing, but please also monitor this and report back how data usage is going over time.

When did you sign up? You will mainly get a push notification when you are quoted in the forums.

We really ripped out a ton of stuff to keep the app crazy light weight. I'll definitely put this in as something to add back, but we will need to balance information with over-complicating the page. Its really hard to get everything you have on desktop without making an app a convoluted mess.

We actually completely replaced the front end of the site specifically to use as modern technology as possible to do this. We knew that our path to get this done initially was the hybrid angle, so we tried to do it as correctly as you possibly can. If you know exactly what you're looking for you will definitely catch the flaws with it... but overall it has turned out almost better than I anticipated.

For the most part, we're in bug fixing mode - at least for Version 1. We're hoping to have V1 into full production mode soon.

However, since winter is essentially over, we have the entire summer to develop further until next winter hits. We will likely start sorting tasks into bug fixes to do now, and overall feature additions once we have a stable V1 out the door.

True true, that makes sense. Would you guys consider (if people agree) replacing the post count names with the actual post count? To me the actual count is more valuable than the labels that go with the post count

For sure.

Anyone else agree with this?

When you click on someone's photo it gives you a back button on the top left but when you click on it, it brings you back farther than one page back

From search if you click on a member and go to their photos, from their photos you can't go back to their profile but only straight back to the search. And if you click on a photo and then click the top left back button it also brings you back to search. Same thing if you click on a member from a forum and look at their photos. The back button always takes you back to the forum

I definitely agree. Would way rather see count than the name, and having both is a bit cluttered.

Also a separate note. Whenever I load something a white bar appears at the bottom of the screen. Not a huge deal but definitely would look cleaner without it always appearing

We're moving the second navigation bar to the bottom based off of feedback from the initial beta testing. That is probably creating that and there will be something there within the hour.

oh ok awesome, that'll be great for navigating. So far that's the only "bad" thing I've encountered, loving everything else so far. Push notifications is amazing to have

Can you define bad a bit more? Are you talking just about that white space?

sorry, I'm managing suggestions from a million different sources right now so clarity is key. ;)

push notifications are really awesome. We kept them really limited to start, but I could see big things in the future as we add more of them.

First day using the app and i freaking love it so far! My only complaint is the fact that while browsing through a forum, we are not able to see the karma points anymore. Other than that I really appreciate the app and this gives NS a fresher look!

yeah by "bad" I meant the white space, but it totally makes sense that thats a placeholder for a nav bar and the code is bleeding through a lil bit during loading screens

We should have a launch out soon to correct that.

Thanks for pointing out! There definitely are bugs and tweaks to correct during the beta phase.

Nice. Stoked to see how this looks/feels in the app.

Both are now probably going to launch tomorrow morning. Didn't quite get it finished today.

although im rarely on here, im salty after paying 1 or 2 bucks 6 or 7 years ago when you made your first app, and i didnt have 1 or 2 bucks to spend... feel like og users should have gotten invites.

Sorry about that man, that app was kind of a disaster. We fucked up and I feel bad about it.

Of if you haven't gotten one yet, send me your email and platform (iOS/android) via PM and I'll get you set up!

Round of changes just went out, one of them being the member bar moving to the bottom. Curious to hear what you guys think of it.

Really like the navigation bar on the bottom, makes my thumbs happy and has worked really well in other apps. Makes navigation way easier

Love it!! So nice to be able to go to threads or notifications without having to go to the top of the page. Nice work!
