Does it matter if God exists?

I'll explain why it's important.

First of all to believe that everything in the universe happened by chance is sheer stupidity. Look at the planets - none look similar at all. You cannot tell me the sun was created by chance, I won't believe it because I don't care how scientists tell me he it happened, SOMETHING made it happen.

Secondly to believe in nothing is a waste of life. Belief is motivational. I don't want to hear the bullshit about how you think there is human suffering and so much pain in the world I bet your life is pretty fucking good. And As for those who do actually suffer; they believe in God 100 times greater than you ever will and they appreciate their God (no matter what they believe in, the point is that THEY DO ACTUALLY BELIEVE)

belief in god is important because it gives you something to hope for.

"You're an idiot if you believe in nothing and jujst a waste of life." - Basically a quote from John Locke from his "a letter concerning tolerance"

Translation: I am too stupid to understand basic scientific concepts, so i choose to believe in a magical man in the sky, which, in my seriously flawed mind, is a simpler explanation for natural phenomenon than proper science.

Translation: I am too stupid to understand simple scientific concepts, so in my own seriously flawed mind, a magical man in the sky is a better explanation for natural phenomena than a scientific explanation that relies on evidence.

I'm going to get sucked in. *Sigh*......
I believe God exists. Hate me, don't hate me. Whatever.
It matters to me because I believe he sent his son Jesus to die for my sins and provide salvation. Does that make me a religious nut? Perhaps. Perhaps not but I don't particularly care one way or another.
I'm going to argue as to weather or not I can prove He exists, because I can't. I can look around and marvel at nature and our bodies and whatever else and chances are you will point out my ignorance. Again, I don't particularly care.
I'm certainly not going to force my opinion down your throat and I'm definitely not going to insult what you may or not believe.
This, like most religious threads on NS, seems to simply be a place for people to bash religion and hate rather than carry out actual discussion.
Now hate away.

no you fucking idiot. science made it happen. but something caused science to happen, and thats where god comes in.

something does not come from nothing

Science doesn't make anything happen.

"Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is, in its broadest sense, any systematic knowledge that is capable of resulting in a correct prediction or reliable outcome. In this sense, science may refer to a highly skilled technique, technology, or practice.[1][2] In its more restricted modern sense, science is a system of acquiring knowledge based on scientific method, and to the organized body of knowledge gained through such research.[3][4]"

Just because we don't know how the entire universe began doesn't mean "God did it." There are plenty of other possible explanations. But really, we don't fucking know how the universe started... and just because you read a book claiming it began one way doesn't mean you have the answer.

your such a fucking idiot i have trouble reading what you write. I didn't literally mean science and i hope you're smart enough to realize that, but i guess i shouldn't make any assumptions. Science tells us everything about what we know about the earth, solar system, universe, thats what i meant. Studying the universe is astronomy - which is a natrual science - fucking idiot.

I'm just going to say it again, soemthing put these things here, whether it be God, Allah, or ishmapoo, idk but you don't get something from nothing.

being an athiest is believing in nothing and i'de become a muslim terrorist before i became an athiest - at least they believe in something.

I don't understand how one could shred some neck deep blower and not believe in something, that's a religious experience if I've ever had one. The mountains are my church brahhh

Science doesn't make things happen. Science is studying the things and what makes them happen. As our science develops it will inevitably to start to (and already has) intertwine with our spirituality. Could be the next great awakening.

Why did something have to start it all? How the fuck do you know? You know absolutely nothing about how the universe began... nobody knows... you're the only person claiming to know how it happened, and rather than using any form of scientific method you're simply suggesting that because nobody knows how it happened, God had to have done it.

And just because i dont believe an invisible man in the sky knows everything and created the universe doesn't mean i don't believe in anything. Since when did you have to believe in 2000 year old fairytales to be a good person?

Lets say hypothetically, god did exist. I hope all you fanboys realize that you can't exist in something that didn't exist before you created it. For god to have created our universe, he had to have been in ANOTHER universe. Therefore, he can't physically exist in THIS universe. Ergo, he can't possibly affect any of your lives so you should stop worrying about what some wizard thinks of you.

MY REACTION

The question becomes apparent if you you are a humanist or not. We are directly involved with our actions and the consequences to our actions. So if you stub your foot, its your own fault, there is no higher being that decided it for you. So you can claim every action leads to a reaction or a consequence based on the parameters and circumstances. But that is pretty much how far it goes.

The other side would claim fate has everything to to a master plan.. We "naturally" make our actions based on past actions. So say you failed a test, you go back with rage and shoot your teacher. Of course you get lock up. Its a natural path that failing a test leading to the next action, shooting your teacher to finish in jail, and thus showing that maybe there is destiny somewhere. The higher power chose you to commit this crime, leading to the inevitable.

So why worship this higher power? It could be to prevent bad lucks and hopefully change fate into your favor because you show mercy to this power. Its a correlation thing in the past. If you pray to God, chances are good things are going to happen, you will be force to make better decisions in the future.

Now could we stop arguing about there is vs there is no god BS? if you wanna do that, do it in another thread.

thats where faith comes in. Thats why believing in God isn't easy.

And about the Bible, its the oldest book we have on human record so why wouldn't you believe it, I much rather believe in something thats thousands of years old, passed down from our ancestors than to believe in nothing at all.

yea the big bang is a plausible idea (although a very stupid one) but how do you think the big bang happened. how did the things that made it happen get here.

Earth is a perfect environment to support life, so how did life start? something that is not living cannot just begin living somehow... a piece of rock or earth does not just come alive, something triggers it and thats the role that God plays. Whether he did it through evolution, creation, etc.. I'm just saying that there is a creator.

Miller-Urey experiment ring a bell? They created amino acids out of water, methane, ammonia and hydrogen. If you didn't know, amino acids are the building blocks of life.
DERPA DERP DERP, SCIENCE WINS AGAIIIN

You know, given that half of the known world believes in either Christianity or Islam, both Abrahamic religions with roughly the same ideas about the origins of the universe, I tend to think that maybe, just maybe, they got something right.

Throughout history, ideas and movements with either flawed ideology or lack of historical support or accuracy tend to die out.

Scientology

Flat Earth Theory

The theory that the Earth is the center of the universe

Humoristic theory of medicine

The list goes on.

That, and I'm going to guess I'm the only person in this thread capable of legally gambling, smoking, or drinking.

Oh, and while I realize that you are all young and know everything, Charles Darwin's theory of the Origins of Species is quite a bit younger than Genesis...

Once again, nobody knows what caused the big bang. It is far from a stupid idea however, seeing as its the most plausible theory given the evidence (expanding universe, background radiation etc.). You don't know what caused the big bang, you just like to think God did it... You have absolutely no evidence to back up this claim though.

Earth supports life, yes, but there are probably trillions of planets out there that can support life.

Abiogenesis is also a very plausible theory as to how life on earth arose. I suggest you look into it further before making such stupid posts.

thats your opinion and 75% or more of humans would disagree with that.

God is much more plausible than life starting by just "luck" Just look at everything in the universe? it didn't just get there, something had to put it there.

Look at religion trends. Sure, there may still be 3 billion people that believe in some "god", but I'm sure a thousand years ago almost everyone believed in some sort of "god".

You sir, are retarded.

You bash us for living our lives based on "fairy tales" and "cosmic wizards" and then come in here and attempt to argue based on a statement which is absolutely, completely, and totally speculative.

I despair for the future of the human race.

No.

We have a pretty good understanding of how the universe evolved from about 0.00001 seconds after the big bang. There is absolutely no need to envoke God into the equation.

If you want to think that a "higher power" made the big bang happen/set the physical laws that govern the universe then be my guest, however, there is absolutely no reason to believe that the "higher power" has actually influenced the universe in any way since its beginning.

Just look at God; he didn't just get there; something had to put him there.

Look at the guy who made God; he didn't just get there; something had to put him there.

Look at the guy who made the guy who made God; he didn't just get there; something had to put him there.

Look at the guy who made the guy who made the guy who made God; he didn't just get there; something had to put him there.

If religious people are so stupid and hopelessly lost and incapable of being taught the true nature of the universe, why do people continue to try so hard?

Romans 8:6-8

6The mind of sinful man[a] is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7the sinful mind[b] is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

Romans 1:18 and Following

18The wrath of God is

being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of

men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For

since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal

power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from

what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21For although they knew

God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their

thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24Therefore God gave them

over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the

degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They

exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created

things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

The fact is that it matters very much whether or not God exists, and that while there is no significant disadvantage to living as though He does, people are too prideful and addicted to their own sin to choose to turn away from it and be accountable to a higher power.

The fact is that if you had to sit down and come up with 20 practical reasons not to believe in God, the list would look something like this.

I cannot have sex with whoever I want

I cannot get slobbering drunk whenever I want

My friends will make fun of me

I have to be unselfish with my possessions

I have to do things that won't be easy if God asks me

I have to go back on things that I've said and done for years

I have to live as though the things I have are a gift from someone else

I have to be accountable to a cosmic law

There will be absolute truth, right, and wrong, and I will choose to do wrong a LOT in spite of what I know to be true.

I will have to swallow my pride and accept God's charity.

I will feel guilty a lot more than I already do.

etc.

etc.

etc.

Spare me that tired old line chap, I've really gotten bored of it. Quite horrendous really.

Let's say I believed in the Snofalopagus, and you say "You're fuckin full of shit, that fucker doesn't exist"
Then I say "I believe in him, and you can't prove me wrong, therefore I am right" is the most BULLSHIT ARGUMENT IN EXISTENCE.
Another thing, you need to realize that Religion is like darkness, and Science is like the light. Religion fills in all the dark spaces(knowledge we have yet to uncover) and Science is all the light(things we know for fact)
Take Genesis for example, Genesis 9:12-13 states "And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth..."

We know that rainbows are just light and water reacting to form prisms, but because the people who wrote the bible did not know that, they chalked it up to god.

Think about Jesus, think about his miracles. He turned water into wine, and healed the sick. Both of which are completely possible today, and it's known as a magic trick. Faith healers as you know, are twats who don't actually do anything, and turning water into wine is something Kriss Angel could do. If I told you today that I was God, and showed you those "miracles" as evidence, would you believe me? OF COURSE NOT! It's ludicrous, you'd have to be retarded. So why do you believe it because it's in the bible?

Let me ask you another question, if everything God does is completely perfect, why has his religion created so many problems? If he loves all of us, why hasn't he broadcasted to the world asking us for peace?

Where did I attempt to prove the existence of God?

You clearly did not read what I posted. I am not surprised by this fact. Either that, or you just didn't comprehend it.

I simply explained your extremely hostile and angry behavior with passages which are much older than you.

The hostility of unbelievers towards the scripture and those who believe in it has been predicted for centuries.

You are no exception.

The problem is most people on this planet are fucking dumb as bricks and can't think for themselves. Anybody with common sense and a basic education can deduce that there is no god

LOL. Reacting to form prisims?

First off, if you hate the Bible so much, why do you use its terminology? The idea of the rainbow is much older than our understanding of how it works, which by the way, you did a terrible job of explaining for someone who apparently knows so much.

The differing refractive index of water versus air causes the differing wavelengths of light to slow down at different rates as they pass from one medium to another.

This causes the light to be bent into its component colors, thus creating the different bands of the visible spectrum.

There is no chemical reaction involved and prisms are not formed out of thin air. Water IS the prism.

Nobody here is Vladimir the Great of Kievan Russia choosing his religion based on the freedoms he is allowed within that religion. The reason everybody here doesn't believe in God is because believing in God is completely illogical.
