What skiing has done for you physically

I want to know what skiing has done for you strength wise and has it helped you excell in school sports and improved your health (obviously). It just popped into my mind because all summer i've been going to the gym to do cardio, legs, abs , arms ect. I Need to get in shape for those long Big Mountain compitition, shitty-snow-runs that's a killer on my legs.

My friends are shitting brix because i can leg press 750LBS. (800 on a good day). Skiing has also helped me on my speed. I'm a really good sprinter/distance at track.

I'm 5'9/153lbs/16 years old.

I got stronger from skiing, therefore looking good, therefore getting ladies, meaning skiing got me pussy.

well not showering before skiing and wearing a toque all day gives me mad acne all winter, so thanks skiing!

oh yea and the fucking leg press.. whenever I'm dicking around in the gym with friends I always show off on the leg press thanks to skiing, 800 is the max I think, and I do 3 sets of 12 on 800 pounds

My left ankle has about half the range of motion of my right and my left index finger makes a grinding sound when i move it and always hurts just a little bit.

My leg and core strength as well as balance have improved a lot though.

That shit sucks i don't know how you people hurt yourselves so much. I've been skiing since i was three and the only injury i had was a fracture on my growth plate index finger. It has nothing to do with my skiing ability.

maybe i don't ski hard enough, but right now 50/50 of all the sport i do is skiing and climbing, and i can say without a doubt that climbing is what keeps me in shape and skiing is what keeps me motivated/happy ....
after a skiing session, i feel happy and fulfilled, after a hard gym climbing training or working on a route an entire day i feel like fulfilled wreck... so both mentally and physically i got my fields covered, how cliché that may sound ...

+i think the 2 go great together, climbing is a low impact sport ie, not very bad for your joints/knees, except for finger tendons + it builds up muscles arount weak point, such as your back, your shoulders, your legs etc.
and to top it all off, my longterm ambition is to become an alpine freeriding guide where i can combine both my passions in one of the coolest jobs on earth....

good: gets me in shape-ish

gets me active and gives me some drive

bad: acne (cause i have my gogs on all the time and shit)

knees are fucked up

lol this thread is going downhill fast.

I can't lift my arm higher than my shoulder, my thumbs will never be the same, and my knees crack whenever I sit down

After multiple dislocations my shoulder falls out pretty easy now. Yaaa skiing! Id say i work out alot harder in the summer and fall because of skiing so i can be ready for winter.

well i was fat before i started skiing, after 6 years of that i was still fat but with fucking muscular legs, then i did park skiing and actually slimmed down a bit because of the hiking.

me too, and a 9 month per year rugby season helped a ton too

when it comes down to it, as much as we rip on skiing, it's why we're all here. WE LOVE TO PIECES

i have a lot better balance. thats the main thing. ive never ever been really out of shape in my life even when im not active at all so it hasnt really done anything for that. aminly its mental for me. less fear of doing big shit and jumping off stuff

back before I had a job, when I was a youngin', my mom would always give me $10 to grab some food on the hill but I starved myself and spent it on bigger and better things

Nah skiing definitely makes me fatter. Just can't resist that lodge poutine.

I'm from Vancouver, I have a whole bunch of family in Calgary so I thought fuck it, when I go during Christmas I'm bringing my skis and I'll show my uncles what's up

I got money, and balance. I've alway been in pretty tip top shape and I got the money from starving myself everytime I ski and keeping the cash my parents gave me

I am the same way...climbing destroys me physically and my legs might hurt a bit if I ski multiple days in a row but man does climbing make me want to die from being so tired.

My legs are now huge, to the point where I've had to go up a waist size in pants, despite having lost weight, in order to get me legs into skinny jeans

cons: wrecked knees, hips, back, wrist, and neck.
pros: smiles on my face that can be achieved in no other way. amazing experiences with friends. an all around sense of the most epic fucking euphoria every time i click in. that super cool funny feeling you get in your stomach right before you try a trick, huck your first cliff, etc. that dope feeling when you're standing on a peak, you drop your goggles down, turn the tunes up to 11/10, and just fucking do it....the happiest times of my life.
pros>cons

Torn acl...

But on a positive note, I would always last longer and recover quicker than most others in soccer. I was also faster than most of the kids. Plus I'm sure it improved my coordination even more, which is helpful everywhere else. I had strong legs until they wasted away from laying around recovering.

I have a wicked ass and thighs from mogul skiing. no homo. But I think overall it and all the other hobbies I picked up because of skiing keep me healthy.

Alpine skiing isn't really much of a work out unless your either skiing really hard or aren't in decent shape. Ski touring on the other hand keeps you in amazing shape.

Unless you do Big mountain/park like me.

and my first multipager thread i'm so proud.

since ive started skiing a lot more and seshing my summer setup people have told me that my quads are so much bigger and muscular... cool i guess?

skiing has also fucked with my knees though haha which is not so great

When I was a fat little kid I had big legs, now that I'm not a fat little kid I have normal sized legs. Big legs were from skiing, now the rest of my body caught up.
So I guess what skiing has done for my physically is ruined my right knee.
