Unpopular opinion thread skier's edition

Alta should put in a few rails. Maybe a little stash park somewhere on the mountain like jackson hole.

Alta is run by wrinkly old cunt bags so that will never happen.

Wearing oversize hoodies, tees, and outerwear is super fucking overrated. Looking through the BST threads and seeing every clothing/outerwear piece being L-XXXL is lowkey annoying. I know the trend originated from wanting to seem "gangster" but there is fucking NOTHING gangster about doing a white-guy-saturated snow sport on a mountain. It's gnarly, of course, but I wouldn't call it gangster. Plus there's nothing kooky about wearing shit that's form fitting as long as it looks cool.

No disrespect to the ability of Edollo and others like him though. I'm just not into the style.

Another thought I have that's probably controversial is that the Nimbus Independent crew miss a lot of opportunities to do gnarly shit. I've seen videos of them safety grabbing a gap that they could have thrown at least a 360 and crossed their skis over. Their 360 butters are really dope but I mean, when watching those videos of them, I always imagine more steezy stuff they could be doing, like handdrags or shifty tree taps and you know, grabs other than safety grabs. And it's not like the skis they are skiing on are that hefty, I mean, isn't the Bent Chetler light as fuck? I know that the backcountry is not as clean cut as a park, but I wish more pow skiers were super jibby and slarvy and focused on making the backcountry their terrain park.

Maybe I am expecting them to do superhuman things though, I don't know. If I am, just tell me.

Honestly I still think does some really cool stuff on skis, but I couldnt watch any more of the weird yelling and dancing and inside jokes. I get the vibe that he's very into mushrooms

haha yeah exactly, this is trash. If he was putting out banger shots it would be worth putting up with the other weird stuff but now even his skiing is unwatchable

I swear some new wavers post certain clips to piss off people on Newschoolers.

Haha I thought that same thing about mushrooms. But that's what I like about him, even if I find some of his skiing ugly, inside his head he's having a blast.

I think Jake Mageau makes that style of skiing look the best

Everyone that down voted this will at some point in their future life look back and realize how ridiculous their gangster ski act was.

I'll get downvoted for saying this but when i wasn't really into skiing years ago, I always thought that the whole baggy clothing thing was cringy. I do think a little bit of bagginess looks good but wearing XXL looks fucking stupid.

Agreed. Also, B-Mack might be the hardest to watch w/ that "style" , his rapping is so cringe as well.

I don't understand why that guy is so popular

B Mack is years ahead of the game, the way he was skiing in 2013 is the way so many skiers are skiing now. The most progressive people are always divisive.

Do not ever fucking suggest that Pollard should cross his skis. Your opinion is not only unpopular it is just flat out heresy.

LOL sorry my dude I legitimately just can't tell whether or not they're sending it as hard as they can.

I've seen vids of young Pollard and I get that the dude is obviously skilled as fuck but sometimes those bc videos seem ironically underwhelming to me.

agree with this. I'm a big fan of magnus but sometimes he makes me think "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

What Nimbus videos are you talking about? Their feature production work always has huge hits, switch landings into pow etc... sure the emphasis is on style but Andy Mahre, Pep, Pollard, Bentchetler all have segments where they send it.

Many places Iv been to have horrible vertical if you only take one lift. the only pace in the east besides Jay that I have found that will bring you top to bottom to ski more then 2000 vertical in one run is Stratton. Places like Killington claim to have huge amounts of vertical but even superstar has only 1200 and the summit 1650. These places can be a waste of time, if I wanted to ski 1200 vertical I would go to black mtn not killy.

Okay okay, but have you ever tried the wets though

I fucking hate the wets. Ive skiied a few laps on them and the only redeeming feature they have is that theyre super light and easy to do swaps. theyre unstable as shit, shits simply wayyyy too soft. Ive heard the wides ski pretty decent though, havent been able to try them out tho.

Landing off a rail sideways and continuing the last 90 of the rotation on the ground looks like shit and shouldn't count for anything.

I don’t hate em but they mad chattery and loose at high speed, and it crud. So fun tho in the park, best park ski out there. 10/10 would recommend to slay the park:-)

imo it's Finess > Far out = Finito = India Kash > Interpretation

I thought finesse was pretty perfect . It was the right balance of obscure b roll and editing, and good skiing . Loved the music too

Swervy buttery weird "new wave" whatever you wanna call it , type skiing, is great because it's exposing more people to skiing and making people see skiing as fun and cool , rather than a form heavy rich guy sport . Hell alot of the "new wave" stuff I see now , was stuff I saw line tc do like 6 years ago . All it did was make me go "I never knew skiing could look like that ", and I think it's dumb to hate on that . All the new stuff coming out now is progressing skiing and making it look fun . I'd bet real money more people whove never seen any skiing , would be intrigued by skiing and wanting to try , if you showed them that popular clip of Magnus that people are hating on now . If you showed them some guy throwing dubs, crazy tech rail tricks, or Tanner hall double backflipping a crazy cliff , they wouldn't care or feel drawn to it .

I agree that Magnus' skiing is more approachable. (Easier to hit a park bench than a 40 foot cliff)

But I think you're incorrect in that Magnus gets greater exposure or brings more people into the sport. The same people consuming his content are the same people watching Tanner Hall. Freeskiing is incredibly niche and arguably, projects with high production value (like Here After) are the edits more commonly watched by those not yet into skiing.

The nuances Magnus' skiing are incredibly difficult but the shuffles, butters, rail combos he does are not the type of skills noticed by people who dont already ski. In fact, I think it has the opposite effect as to what you're saying. He's a top level pro and the content he puts out is pretty cringy to watch. I dont think people who dont already ski would have any interest in watching a Bunch film, but everyone can appreciate someone hucking a double backy or dropping a huge cliff

Well I guess my argument is for appreciation vs approachability , I think at least personally seeing some simple unique manuevres get me more interested because my brain goes "hey maybe I could do that ". Not so much on a dub backflip . And yeah Magnus alone isn't the best example but regardless of who you pick ,I think "creative skiing" would cause more people to see skiing in a new way, than simply going huge . Lots of people watch clips of extreme sports and don't really care even if they appreciate it . But if they see something they could maybe do , they might be more inspired to get started ? If you feel where I'm coming from . I'm pretty sure what made me wanna ski was watching Andy parry do a ski slide 180 out off some stinky hand built rail ... Prior to that I'd seen a bunch of tgr clips, pipe runs , etc. I think the unexpected stuff is always more inspiring

Totally. Those early LTC episodes were the perfect blend of style/approachablity and gnar, deff agree with you there. They were one of the major reasons I stopped snowboarding and started skiing.

I just feel like Magnus is a little too 'out there' now for anyone to see his edits and be like "oh I want to do that." I just feel like if he cleaned up the style a little bit he'd be even more dope. I think LSM is a great example of this.

And, FWIW Magnus' part in Less is one of my favorite segments ever

I also think that Magnus being at his level probably knows he doesn't have to try as hard for a random insta clip so I feel like some of his stuff he's just goofing around to show he's having fun .. I loved his less segment and no matter what you're into I think there's no doubt the guy is skilled .. I think he knows what his real fans like and there's always gonna be a difference between when he caters to his fans vs trying to gain fans . As cringy or goofy as him swerving and bending around May look to some, I think it's hard to disregard that it's pretty pure .. very spontaneous.. he's doing his thing regardless of what any one says and he's doing a good job too . I think that lesson can be applied in many areas on life
