Unpopular opinion thread skier's edition

A shitty wobbly spray paint line on feature take offs looks terrible. Eapecially a color like orange. Can take a pro level setup and make it look like a 3rd grader built it.

Obviously the features will still 3ide nice but damn.

Imo looks are almost as important as how something rides.

In regards to the new wave stuff, I just started paying attention to NS again in like early November after being mostly absent for a few years and it was like I had been plunged into some weird hellish fever dream, but I think I kinda get it now.......

....... I feel better now.

This entire post (cut down for quote space), if probably one of the best posts I've ever read on here, especially concerning this new wave shit.

Yeah they’re for sure warmer. I just don’t wear mittens because I’m afraid I won’t be able to complete my rotations anymore and I’ll start landing sideways and washing landings out

So I only wear gloves to ensure I can land properly

Mittens make me feel S W E R V Y

The spray paint lines at Killington look ugly and ruin the aesthetic of any feature they build. Clean lines are important on clean lines. The narrow lines don't look as good and almost always they're shaky, sometimes bad.

I know it's their thing but I always hope they'll stop.

The green is also hard to see in flat light

Yeah I noticed that. I get that green is cool for mtn dew or monster, but that blue shows up better. Those landings were super dark the whole comp. Sucks that even on a bluebird day you can't see your landing.

I think people are too worried about the new wave and its influence. NS acts like its the total degradation of skiing but realistically there are still tons of crazy talented and skilled skiers not doing swervy shit. Take a look at Stain, anything from Ruka, Being Human, or Strictly Business among other videos.

I’m glad women got streetstyle, but could you at least have gotten some more pros to do it? Seemed a little weak

Yeah but she obviously doesn't like shinbang. She was trying to be funny. I think you're the one missing the point here bud.

if this newfangled wave of skiing is so easy, why don't I propose a challenge. Get a buddy and take one run out of your day, take off your outer layers to expose the trackpants, suspenders, and hoodie you were wearing underneath and film a swervy run. Gnar points and a couple of laughs and maybe you'll discover a talent you never knew you had.

Beat up skis and gear looks more dope than brand new everything

Worst case scenario - you get a few laughs.

Best case scenario - you get sponsored by Vishnu and get to travel the world as a pseudo-professional skier!

That is the point.

FT's are sick outside of the unpopular opinion thread

I had two pairs of full tilts. Never again. Those boots are ass

Considered a pair of FT Descents because the bootfitter paired me up with those and the Dalbello Kryptons.

Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about the FTs?

Weird pressure points on the top of my foot, shitty buckles that broke on me numerous times, irreplaceable contact points on the toes (at least on the classics I had) that would wear down and create a LOT of wiggle room my bindings over time, not very tight hold in the ankle unless I cranked down the buckles to the point it really hurt my feet, too much flex

They were cheap and worked/fit well enough after a heat mold, but switching to a pair of atomic hawx with traditional 4 buckle design made me realize how much I was sacrificing in FTs. My boots feel much more responsive overall and cause a lot less pain and inconvenience.

Granted I haven't tried their newer models but my experience with them was not great. Some of this is probably due to the shape of my foot and other personal differences... but yea. I'll probably never buy another pair

The only post I've read in the past year I'd give 2 upvotes to

In regards to the new wave stuff, I just started paying attention to NS again in like early November after being mostly absent for a few years and it was like I had been plunged into some weird hellish fever dream, but I think I kinda get it now.

After hearing about it ad nauseam on Ski Gabber I looked it up and watched videos of Magnus and Wabs, and I had like a solid hour of this weird surreal experience of trying to get my bearings on this goofy ass trend.

"What the fuck is this garbage? Is this a meme? Is this some inside joke I'm on the outside of?"

After figuring out that these riders are totally serious with their hands waving fucking everywhere and doing weird shit I kinda started to understand. I think what happened (and this is my best guess at it) is that a few very talented riders saw what the competition scene was starting to look like, and started seeing what people like Henrik were doing in their videos and basically recognized that they were absolutely never in a zillion years going to be that good. And rightfully so – that level of skiing is absolutely nuts. It's a superhuman god-tier level of athleticism, agility, and gymnastic skill. The soon-to-be new wavers were talented, but they were never going to be the best of the best, and they knew it. I'm not trying to talk down on their skills because I will never be as good as they are, I'm just speaking realistically.

So instead of trying to be the best of the best, they had to do something to stand out and get recognition. What better way to make yourself stand out than dress like a goddamned jerry and do the most bizarre stuff you could think of? I am almost entirely convinced that this started ironically and then when it took off they just embraced it and now it's a meme gone too right and they're just going with it. Maybe now they're totally serious and fully enjoy skiing and dressing like that, but at the beginning I doubt it was a serious "this is who I am now" thing. Just look at Magnus' Superunknown edit from whatever year that was – he's all thugged out.

So, new wave came into the game and became a sanctuary for those who could not or were unwilling to go big and put their own flair on it. For most, it's a super low-consequence style of skiing. The irony is that it started as a way to buck the trend of bigger and bolder tricks in order to stand out, and now a large chunk of skiers are just blending into that trend wave as well.

There's nothing wrong with that and you can ski however you want and dress however you want. That said, I'm still allowed to think that:

A) you look stupid as hell with your track pants and hood under your helmet

B) The trend is an excuse for sloppy low consequence skiing

C) The style is absolutely terrible because you don't look like you're in control

But hey if they're having fun, that's fine.

Whew ok I had to get that off my chest, this new wave shit has been confusing me ever since my return to NS. I feel better now.

Yeah not sure if you know what 'unpopular opinions' actually means

Teaching friends how to ski and seeing how stoked they get when they pick it up and gain confidence is better than even the deepest of pow days

The only problem I’ve ever had is the buckles breaking. They did hurt my feet for a bit but I guess I broke them in or something

i just had a 9 year old in a lesson learn to turn both ways, slow, and stop. it was his first day skiing. He told me he loved skiing and it was one of the funnest things hes ever done it was honestly a good ass feeling to hear that.

David Wise is extremely talented and mind blowing to watch. In general not trying to ride pipe skiers dicks, but they are the best (park) skiers in terms of raw skiing ability.

I'd argue mogul skiers are better in terms of skiing ability but it's close

Why are pipe skiers the best? It seems like pipe skiing is a pretty specialized skill that might not translate over to the rest of the mountain in an immediate way as other skiing disciplines do. I guess it depends on how you define ‘raw skiing ability’ though.

Why do mogul skiers always wear snowpants that have separate/different colored knee patches? Wondered this for a while

So the judges can see what the knees are doing from the bottom of the course
