I also think that Magnus being at his level probably knows he doesn't have to try as hard for a random insta clip so I feel like some of his stuff he's just goofing around to show he's having fun .. I loved his less segment and no matter what you're into I think there's no doubt the guy is skilled .. I think he knows what his real fans like and there's always gonna be a difference between when he caters to his fans vs trying to gain fans . As cringy or goofy as him swerving and bending around May look to some, I think it's hard to disregard that it's pretty pure .. very spontaneous.. he's doing his thing regardless of what any one says and he's doing a good job too . I think that lesson can be applied in many areas on life

Lol fair enough, different strokes for different folks

I fucking hate Instagram edits. It’s always some shitty camera work and garbage amateur editing. Imo the camera work and editing is just as important as the skiing. I don’t give a shit how good your skiing is, if your camera work and editing sucks I’m turning it off.

Also if you pick some shitty low production value rap track with auto tune all over the place, I’m turning it off.

the new wave is objectively the future of skiing

Like it or not, style is what started freestyle and new style will always dictate the changes in the sport.

Skiere care to much about fashion. I will rock my Free Country jacket and white cue ball helmet shamelessly.

I just picked up a pair of ataryx snowpants for 18 bucks at walmart. They're warm, black and cheap. If anyone throws shade at me they can fuck right off.

Rock on! I got my snow pants for $20 at Burlington Coat Factory. 5 years strong.

Landing off a rail sideways and continuing the last 90 of the rotation on the ground looks like shit and shouldn't count for anything.

It depends for me. If you stall the rotation but upper body is turned and snap around the second you land it can be kind of cool. If you just underotate that's just nasty.

I dig it with skating more because it's actually cool to land sideways. If you land all your rails sideways you're probably just a sloppy fucking skier.

Not really an unpopular opinion because most people prolly don't even have an opinion on it.

But when people build rails that are set flat but are too lazy to cut the elbows for straight legs. Rainbows have this a lot. The rainbow has a curve and comes in at an angle, the people weld a 90 degree elbow and the leg kicks back in. It looks fucking gross and lazy as fuck. Chop that shit and do a fucking straight leg.

I have Soul 7s as a rock ski and I still have fun on them skiing. They also got me into skiing again a few years ago so I can't hate on them.

Dakine is better quality and cheaper than any other skiing dedicated outerwear brand.

Gloves are better than mitts (gotta be P R A C T I C A L

Baggy outerwear is impractical and annoying

I can't give you an thumbs up and a thumbs down apparently? You've made to we'll reasoned points about outerwear, but then you wrote that gloves are better than mittens which is a garbage opinion.

Only new wavers wear mittens which is a garbage style

Mittens are warmer. Fact. Gloves are more functional. I wear both. Proud to be part of the new wave I guess.

Yeah they’re for sure warmer. I just don’t wear mittens because I’m afraid I won’t be able to complete my rotations anymore and I’ll start landing sideways and washing landings out

So I only wear gloves to ensure I can land properly

I wouldn't say mittens are warmer.

In my experience if your core is cold your hands will be cold regardless of gloves or mittens

Skiing is becoming too religious and everyone is Romanticising the sport. Henriks last video was like this dudes lives work when it was just him skiing as usual and having someone film for a couple of years. You can't criticize anyone anymore and everything is off limits. Like tall t Dan saying you don't earn your stripes, you have them, that's wack af. Everything is all about fashion and culture too, like on3p, that shit wack, and don't even get me started on this swerve shit, the current film skier's are literally kids who don't want to go big and they try to replace it with "creativity" all the shit the same, swerve left, swerve right, jib a pebble, and ski some decent urban spot. The fact that most people hate on competition skier's is just a byproduct of watching there favorite skier's (with a few exceptions) be worse then competition but relatable to the average park skier. Like I said everything is too serious, everything is your lives work, and you put your life on the line. Mountain biking is way older than park skiing yet athletes are still pushing the sport as a minimum. Yeah I get it, we just got to a 4 and probably won't ever get past a 5 but there are still way bigger features out there and so many skier's who gain cult followings from swerving and doing the same shit as everyone else on ig. Also b Mack's music a not good.

In regards to the new wave stuff, I just started paying attention to NS again in like early November after being mostly absent for a few years and it was like I had been plunged into some weird hellish fever dream, but I think I kinda get it now.

After hearing about it ad nauseam on Ski Gabber I looked it up and watched videos of Magnus and Wabs, and I had like a solid hour of this weird surreal experience of trying to get my bearings on this goofy ass trend.

"What the fuck is this garbage? Is this a meme? Is this some inside joke I'm on the outside of?"

After figuring out that these riders are totally serious with their hands waving fucking everywhere and doing weird shit I kinda started to understand. I think what happened (and this is my best guess at it) is that a few very talented riders saw what the competition scene was starting to look like, and started seeing what people like Henrik were doing in their videos and basically recognized that they were absolutely never in a zillion years going to be that good. And rightfully so – that level of skiing is absolutely nuts. It's a superhuman god-tier level of athleticism, agility, and gymnastic skill. The soon-to-be new wavers were talented, but they were never going to be the best of the best, and they knew it. I'm not trying to talk down on their skills because I will never be as good as they are, I'm just speaking realistically.

So instead of trying to be the best of the best, they had to do something to stand out and get recognition. What better way to make yourself stand out than dress like a goddamned jerry and do the most bizarre stuff you could think of? I am almost entirely convinced that this started ironically and then when it took off they just embraced it and now it's a meme gone too right and they're just going with it. Maybe now they're totally serious and fully enjoy skiing and dressing like that, but at the beginning I doubt it was a serious "this is who I am now" thing. Just look at Magnus' Superunknown edit from whatever year that was – he's all thugged out.

So, new wave came into the game and became a sanctuary for those who could not or were unwilling to go big and put their own flair on it. For most, it's a super low-consequence style of skiing. The irony is that it started as a way to buck the trend of bigger and bolder tricks in order to stand out, and now a large chunk of skiers are just blending into that trend wave as well.

There's nothing wrong with that and you can ski however you want and dress however you want. That said, I'm still allowed to think that:

A) you look stupid as hell with your track pants and hood under your helmet

B) The trend is an excuse for sloppy low consequence skiing

C) The style is absolutely terrible because you don't look like you're in control

But hey if they're having fun, that's fine.

Whew ok I had to get that off my chest, this new wave shit has been confusing me ever since my return to NS. I feel better now.

yes, this is the dead horse that we have been relentlessly beating in the 3 years you've been gone. I'm one of the only regular skiers who still uses poles in the park at my home hill and all of the kids are starting to call me grandpa. Is this what getting old feels like?

Lmao that clip was perfect.

I’ve been lurking since like 04 and joined in 06 or 07. I think my habitual every day NS usage lasted from 07-2011ish. I think I checked in occasionally between then and now but I'm pretty sure I almost entirely forgot about NS from 2014-2017.

Anyway, good to be back, can't wait to shred this year.
