People Who Dont Tip

Yes!!!

Also all these people going off about tipping and how I should tip for the delivery service, well they don't seem to realize that this mandatory tipping expectation they have is not beneficial to the good servers.

When peoe go out they know that they're expected to leave a tip, now to the extent that they don't pass much judgement on the a tual service they received. They just leave a tip because anything but a tip is not socially acceptable.

However, to the good servers, it's a lot better if people tip based on service and not just because its expected. That way good servers would more often receive the tips they deserve.

Anyways. I'm over this thread

hahaha touche. however, neither is bud light.

but really, it's good beer and draft no less

This. I hate that this type of bar experience is expected in the U.S. and then the bartenders hold out their hand expecting their 1 buck per drink. It's totally fucked up. So for doing your job, and generally serving guys who have the money to pay you last, we are supposed to add a dollar to each drink. I think I might stop doing this. The difference is if I have a bar seat and am buying a few rounds and am being served then I'd rather leave a large tip for that bartender.

And a lot of people seem to have a backwards tipping experience than I do. Why do some of you say to tip well and then you'll get great service? You get served and then you tip so how would the waiter know if they're going to get a good tip or not? It shouldn't be that way. If great service is provided then a great tip will follow, it should not be the other way around.

i think most people agree it is a weird and flawed system. the problem is that people without brains sometimes use that as an excuse to not tip

one thing I don't understand, I hear it all the time "oh try with doing a serving job it's so stressful" "I hate people who don't tip, they don't understand what we go through blah blah blah. seriously, if it's that bad get a new damn job. and you guys have the nerve to call us cheap basterds, how about if you have to call an electrician or plumber to your house and you're slapped with a $100 or $400 bill for a simple fix, why do you not feel entitled to pay a tip? could you have done what they just did? obviously not because you had to call them in the first place. And I only worked as a service electrician for a few months.

one fucking douche I have on Facebook constantly complains about how hard it is to be a server or bartender. Fuck man get a new job. today he complained about having to work 9 days straight. I work 14 12hr Days straight in a construction camp and never complain.

and one last thing, I never, I repeat never tip a bartender if he tries to go all flair on me. Fuck you, I want my drink now not after you twirl the damn bottle for 30 seconds.

in my opinion, bartenders and servers are there to make your experiance a pleasant one. when they do, they deserve a tip. conversly, if they simply go through the motions and generally come off as indifferent, they don't deserve a tip and won't ever get one from me. i can't count the number of times i've been given bad cut-eye from a server because they either got a bad tip or no tip at all from me. here's a couple of instances where thisd had happened:

- server comes in 10 minutes after we're seated and absolutely reaks of cigarettes, doesn't come and check on us during the meal, has to be flagged down for the bill

- server forgets to take into account a request for something to be left off, forgets to enter another item, manager comes out and gives some half-assed excuse

- server ignores gf and i all night because there's a table of 5 guys she spends time flirting with.

that's just three nights out that i can remember but there are countless other times.

i really hate when servers/bartenders make a huge stink about not being tipped. you work in the service industry and while it's customary to tip as a reward for good service, it's not mandatory.

if you're one of the ones that gets pissed off, you should either 1)find a new job or 2)get yourself an attitude adjustment because what you're doing now just isn't working.

yeah but the death stare when i give her a "fuck you" tip isn't needed. if she doesn't know the difference between good and shit service she should get another job. still haven't gone back there

In most cases, you are jot only tipping the servers/waitstaff, but the cooks. Working on the line is not easy. I'd love to see any of you cheap no-tipping bastards to hop on the line during dinner rush and call it easy and low stress. Tip your cooks. They are the true heroes.

Honestly the pizza guy thing is usually a misconception or mistake so I wouldn't call everyone scumbags. Pizza companies should take off their delivery fees or explain it better so that way it becomes apparent to people that the delivery charge is not the fee for the driver. I think most people would rather give a larger tip to the driver, rather than $3 for the bill and then a small tip on top of that. That's just me though. But again, the delivery thing is tricky because of how businesses set it up.

It's like when people see a service charge or something then they are less likely to tip or more likely to tip smaller. Just a habit.

I could honestly see tipping eventually be taken to the Supreme Court, you get more money if you're more attractive, and that's discrimination. :)

There's a huge problem for people who agree with the arguments that Freakonomics article provokes. 1) Don't tip, and face getting lumped into a bunch if cheapo losers 2) don't tip and have to repeatedly argue your case to friends, coworkers, angry pizza guys 3) willingly contribute to a ruinous and flawed system because you've already been waiting for the tab for too fucking long already.

are you fucking kidding me? you get $80 for one bag for a round and thats bad? $80 was my best day this season, usually its in the $40 to $50 range. what course do you work at?

If you don't leave a tip you're ignorant. You can make up any excuse you want but you're just a rude, ignorant person. (Unless the service was shitty or you're not from the US)

i think people should go back into the kitchen and tip the chefs instead of the servers haha, theyre the ones doing all the hard work.

Its not hard to be a server, or bartender. It's hard to be a GOOD server or bartender at a respectable establishment. LOL your comparing serving/bartending to being an electrician. Your funny man.

Next time when you go out to dinner, (a nice place) kindly tell everyone at the table that you will not be joining them, instead you will be serving food , plating, and taking orders for everyone at the table. Your also going to clear plates, make sure the table is clean, and make sure everyone has a drink. All while making sure everyone's food is good, and everyone is taken care of.

Sound like fun?

No it doesn't because your going out to dinner to relax, not pour drinks, clean tables, or serve food. That's what it is like at home, not when you go out.

I make $3.25 an hour, not bitching, but I do bring home $250-$300 a night from serving. That's working from 5pm-1030 pm, which equates to $54 an hour. Not bad if you ask me.

Mind you, the restaurant I work at is 5 star, and having a single water spot on our silverware is considered unacceptable.

Lastly, if you dropped a goose egg on me for doing a few tricks, you can bet your ass that bottle would have accidentally slipped right towards your face.

I did pizza delivery for 8 months and then did valet for about 8-9 month and I didn't get stiffed often, but when you do it really sucks. When you run to someones car, drive it up to them, open their door with a smile and they dont tip you, its so fucked up. Even worse is when people would tip you in change, fucking ridiculous.

I tip ~20% always, unless someone sucks but 95% of the time service is usually good enough to deserve 20%.

Now bars I don't go off of percent, I usually do a dollar for every serve aka if i order a few beers, i'll tip a dollar, if i order a couple shots (just pour booze) ill tip a dollar. But, if I have a huge order with shots and beers or if i get some mixed shot ill throw in an extra dollar or two depending on how much they serve. Then, if a bartender is tight I will always toss them an extra $5 at the end of the night and vise versa if they suck.

I dunno how it is in other countries, but in canada I got straight yelled at by a bartender once because I didn't give her a tip (she opened two bottles of beer for me that were like $8 each). I told her I would be back and I would tip her next time (gave her a $20, gave me back two $2 pieces) and I didn't wanna tip her $2 for opening two bottles for me. She then screamed at me "SERVICE IS NOT INCLUDED WITH PRICE" or something similar and i threw a toonie on the bar and didn't come back to her the rest of the night. I told everyone I saw not to go to her bar (there were like 4 in the venue). Needless to say, her bar was pretty empty most of the night, she was a huge bitch.

hey i left a penny on the table today thats a pretty chill tip? this thread is changing my mindset, sincerely thank you guys for complimenting shitty service.....

If it make you feel even better I occasionally throw a six pack of pbr to the cooks out back at the brew pub I go to. Pbr is a pretty standard beer for where I live.

Every one of you who thinks because you have a shitty starting wage that you should be tipped well should consider another job. You're in that service of work to be personable and to work for the money you make. It's as simple as that. I wont't comment on the pizza delivery jobs and such, but if you're waiter or waitress and you get tipped on how you perform. how often you check on table, food is good and if not do something about it, fast delivery, good with people.

On another note, who else feels that it is okay to tip on the bill before tax? Government is taking enough away from me. If the service is good, then I'll give you 20% but still before taxes.

Probably minimum wage. When i was one (2007) it was a local pizza place and min wage was like 6 something and i got $8/hr.

As a valet i got paid like a server, 2.13/hr (utah) its a little different in each state.

Eh, I wish I could work on a gratuity pay system as opposed to flat rate. The benefit of flat rate is nice but when unforeseen problems and issues arise, more often than not you find yourself 'losing' money.

I have NEVER seen a $3 delivery charge. usually a dollar AT MOST.

I tip everywhere, i ALWAYS hook up the waitress or the girl getting my coffee for me. For example i went out to dinner with 4 friends our bill was $90 ( didn't get charged for beers or drinks because were good friends with the owner) my buddy throws a 100 on the table ( wasn't expecting him to pay it) so i threw in a $20 and my buddy threw in a $10. We tipped on what the bill would have been with charging us drinks. We hooked the girl up with $40 bucks and she didn't do much at all. I've worked tip jobs and it makes my night when i get a big tip. All you non tippers suck and need to learn what it's like to work a job like that.

It all depends on where you live. I think ive seen $2 at some places. When I was a driver we had a $1 charge but that was given to the drivers for gas. On nights i had a ton of deliveries, it got maybe $5 extra from the charge, but on a slow day/night it barely covered gas. A slow shift was like 5 deliveries and busy was like 20.

exactly this. everytime i get a good server i try to tip a bit extra if i can. if there an ass ill barely leave anything. blows they hardly make anything though

Moving from the UK to Canada, It took me a while to come round to tipping. I'll always tip my waiter %15 unless they've been shit then they get nada. But i don't tip for someone getting me a beer, maybe a dollar when I leave the bar but my general view is that i'm not gonna tip someone for the 30 seconds it takes to hand me something. I work as an instructor over winter and we never complain when we don't get tipped but get expected to tip when we go to the bar in the lodge after work. One day i bought a beer and didn't tip and the bartender sarcastically said "thanks for the tip bud". That shit is fucked!

my current job is the first one I've ever had where I get tips, and I have to say after that I'm such a nice tipper. I always tipped 20% for any service unless the person absolutely sucked, and now I tip like 30% minimum for services that are highly personal. My job isn't the typical food service stuff where you make below minimum plus tips, I'm making $11 an hr plus tips and on a good pay period I well over double my salary which feels pretty nice. I don't understand how people can deal with food service jobs.

Its insanely frustrating with my job though, I guide horseback tours in the backcountry and usually people rack up a hefty bill. If I'm ringing up a ride where it totals well over $400 and the people tip like $20 I get pretty miffed. Its like dude, i just babysat your sorry fat ass for three fucking hours. Just me with your whole fucking family. Jumping on and off my horse during the whole ride to pick up shit you've dropped, take your stupid picture 10 fucking times, help your stupid fucking son steer his fucking horse because he didn't fucking listen to the directions we all gave him at the beginning of the ride. and this whole fucking time I have to smile, tell jokes, keep you fuckers entertained and control my neurotic headcase of a horse as she balks at stumps, rocks and squirrels (she's convinced they're all going to kill her). And at the end you go on and on about how it was the prettiest ride you've ever been on, how I was awesome and you can't wait to come back and bam. $20. Come on, really? I deserve a little better than that for all the time and commitment you got from me. This isn't just some homeboy who made your sub at the local sammie joint. And don't get me wrong, I appreciate you guys a ton as well. If you make me a dank sammich I'll tip you 50%

We don't tip in New Zealand. Took an American friend out for dinner one night when it was his first time in the country. He went to pay a tip but the restaurant wouldn't even accept it. He was quite amazed by that.

Muffin. There are millions of people in your country who get paid less WITHOUT tips for jobs which suck serious balls.

You get $20 tip + $33 salary for 3 hours of riding a horse in some beautiful area and you complain it's not enough because you have to get off your horse a bunch or take a bunch of pictures??

Spoiled much?

3hr ride is like $200-300 a person and if they have 4-5 family members thats up to $1500. 10% would be $150 bucks, $20 is a slap in the face.

What you said is completely irrelevant because she's probably used to getting at least 10% for each ride, probably more. It has nothing to do with how much she already makes, she is comparing her experience to ones in the past.

Example, depending on the place i valet i had an expectation for how much I would get tipped. Some places I never expected more than $2-3 and if i got $1 i was upset and if i got $5 id be stoked. Then at another place id expect $4-6 and if i got any less than $4 it was pretty upsetting and it was normal to get $10+. It all depends on circumstances.

thank you

I'll take the $20, but when they gush and gush about how awesome it was and you know that they have money coming out of every orifice as they trundle back to their escalade to get their wallet, its pretty insulting.

yea, one might call me spoiled, my job is better than a lot of them out there, but if some of you guys did what I do you'd get pretty frustrated. Yes I make decent money, but I'm also putting in 70 hour weeks with no overtime pay and its only a 100 day season and then its back to barely above minimum wage all winter after a 2 month period of unemployment. so by some standards on this website i'm not spoiled much at all.

Stop sounding like a brat.. By the sounds of it you dont even enjoy working. It must be miserable taking a couple pictures damn... Just like a server, youre suppose to be friendly and do what you can to please customers. You got a shitty tip and they probably saw that tou deserved it.

This thread is a fantastic display of how easy jimmies are to rustle and butts are to hurt; likely due to the time of the year. It's like NS as a whole is on it's period.
