Official Tahoe Thread

Im leaving for a week in Florida on Wednesday. This gives me more faith that it will actually snow. Karma for wishing for the worst season on record because I was recovering from a broken back.

i went golfing in reno yesterday and it felt like late march to mid april. it was really nice. this week is gonna be in the 60s as well i think so im kind of thinking its like the warm before the storm. hopefully we get a storm with like a 2 ft dump so i can use my new powder skis

I don't know how BA has historically been since there's been no snow for him to forecast, but Joel Gratz (founder of OpenSnow) is pretty goddamn good for Colorado.

I read what BA has to say with a grain of salt. He throws huge, vague numbers out, like his last post. And I really really hope he's right, but like I said, I'll believe it when i see it. I've seen him predict a few huge storms that only delivered inches or nothing. Right now I'm reading his posts as best cast, and NOAA as worst case. I feel like when I first moved here in 2011/12 he was OK but last season he blew it and this year there's been no snow to forecast soooo. But that's just me. Read/believe what you want.

Bryan's been pretty off the last 3 seasons, if only because they've been filled with crazy anomalies and he keeps having to look at medium range and long range forecasts a week to two weeks out. He does a pretty good job with most of the models, and lets you know when one's looking pretty crazy. Yeah, he's optimistic, and he posts snowfall predictions with higher-end sort of numbers (because that's what the models usually spit out), but if you go back to 2010 and 2011 when he was running TWD he was so on point just about every day.

I blame the really weird winters Tahoe has had the last three years more than Bryan. His predictions are pretty well in line with almost anything you'll get elsewhere.

Besides, I wouldn't ever take any forecast from anybody straight up, especially when they are so dependent on computer models these days. It's the weather. It's still one of the hardest things to predict on this planet. I mean, we can predict the sex of a human in womb 5 months out, but weather? 5 days out is a stretch in some circumstances.

I'm expecting to see half a foot on the hills out of this thing. It won't be the crazy 3 foot storm that the Canadian model is predicting. I mean, he threw that one out as a huge outlier anyways the other day.

even if you take the low end of his forecast it says a foot plus. at this point we should be happy with anything.

that's also why I like joel gtratz's forecasts because he purposely posts lower totals than he actually expects

Yeah, at 8k... and that's still a maybe.

at 7k we're looking at 8" according to him - which is exactly what everything else is indicating.

...as of right now, though... rain is all I can see.

I have to work tonight til 10pm. I already got Saturday covered so I could ski for 4 days on rocks and ice. Back off Bro.

heavenly was pretty good the past few days I was surprised how much there was up top even the tree's had pretty good coverage on the upper half of the mountain.

south lake definitely got more snow then north lake. kind of a bummer, but at least we have some white stuff on the ground now

Anybody in the Bay Area (preferably North) want to carpool for a day trip on Monday to catch the best part of this storm? I have a car, I just would prefer to have someone else to ride with and to help bring the gas cost down. I have both the Squalpine and Fail Resorts pass. There will be marijuana and hopefully some cliff hucking of anything opens up.

What are you talking about? Hasn't rained above around 7000-7500k the whole time. Upwards 24"+ already has dropped.

yeah the base of kirkwood is still right about freezing temps so as long as it doesn't get any warmer, tomorrow is gonna be super awesome down there. stoked to get to use my pow skis

Any Squalpine intel? I'm taking a buddy from Colorado skiing who has never skied either mountains and want to go ski whichever has better terrain open right now. I was up the the several days before the recent storm and Alpine definitely had better terrain open then, but 60-100 inches have fallen since then....

I'll hopefully be in Tahoe sunday and monday (pissed I'm missing J5 play sat night) so I'll prob show him squaw on Monday when it's less crowded.

Its been real warm but not enough to turn anything to corn. The snow is very average. There is good coverage and when the next storm rolls in things will be legit.

Do you know who worked on your stuff/which location did you go to? I've always had a positive experience at elite feet and have been going to them for my boots and skis for 2 years now

I second the starthaus. You wont like it at first because hes gonna pretty much disregard everything you say coming into it, but he knows what hes doing and you'll get the best fitting boots

I have finally found this thread. I moved to the Bay Area this past summer, living in Berkeley right now. I'm grinding weekdays at the office but I'm tryna get it on weekends in Lake Tahoe..

I have a pass to Squaw and Alpine, would love to car share with any bay area people or anyone on the way to the mountain.. I just got an Acura TSX just need to get some snow chains and a roof rack but for now it's holding it down fine.

First season in Tahoe, would love to extend the network of ski homies, especially for safety meetings, sittin on that medical card quite nice. hit me up.. cheers!

Starthaus is another good location

Ask to get an appointment with James, Charlie, or Justin. They're a lot more down to earth about stuff, and they're consistent. They aren't pushy either like some of the more pretentious bootfitters can be.

Coverage is pretty impressive considering there has only been 1 decent storm since the beginning of December. Almost everything at Squaw and Alpine are open. Worth coming home for? Probably not unless you already had plans to come home anyways.
