Official Tahoe Thread

Anyone going to be at northstar for the dew tour? I tried to google it and nothing came up; do you need tickets to just watch slopestyle/pipe or how does it work?

The dew tour isn't held somewhere you could easily walk to from the parking lot, if you have a pass thats good, you don't need a special ticket to watch the dew tour, at least thats how it was a few years ago when I saw part of it.

Ahhh yeah the Grand Prix. I don't have a Northstar pass so it'll basically cost me a day pass to watch? Might do that half the day and ski the other half.

Did anyone see Squaw's instagram post about some Oakley feature? They said something about having it thursday... is it gonna be set up tomorrow or this weekend?

I'm ready to retire and finally become an ex-stream skier already... That's basically how much rocks we have right now.

Boreal nights all week for me, I think.

have you been there recently? how is their setup? on their facebook it looked like they got some pretty good jumps set up, wondering if anyone has hit them yet?

Been up there the last two nights. Pretty fun.

Top has some soft moguls from scraping noobs.

Jumpline consists of two pretty decent sized, and well maintained hits. My roomie was throwing punch fronts and semens on them all night. (I wasn't hitting them because I'm nursing an ankle injury). Finishes off with a spine with a barrel on top of it for hand drags and tail taps. speed check a little bit into the last feature, or maybe a hair bit into the 2nd jump. They're easy to take pretty deep, especially at night when the snow firms up a hair.

Jib park has a shitload of features, too. For the most part well maintained (though there were some serious bomb holes in some of them, for sure.

is anyone else disgusted with the lack of snow in the tahoe area?

Not just Tahoe. All winter break sucked and now I'm up in Oregon for school and the snow here is basically the same. And I was in mammoth last week and it was the same too. The whole west coast is blowing

it ticks me off. i work monday-friday though and am usually too tired to do anything on the weekends anyways... but still. it ticks me off.

Yep. And I'm sick of people saying that it's still early season so its okay. To me the core of winter skiing ends in mid-March or so. After that its spring skiing and leftovers. Winters aren't as long as they used to be so when it is this bad for this long it really blows. For me this is skiing season, not early season and there is no snow.

yeah the lack of snow is annoying for like the 3rd year in a row. stoked to be going to SLC this weekend though where they are getting bits of new snow all week. should be fun to hopefully get some fresh turns

the lack of snow sucks, but i'm still having a lot of fun. this is my first season in the west. coming from wisconsin... the park shred here has been great. waiting on that pow pow, though.

that's still the one thing I love about Tahoe and some of the bigger resorts. even on slouchy winters, they blow snow and keep their parks on point. so while there are less tourists and other friends saying there is no coverage and the conditions are crappy, you can go peacefully get some good park laps throughout the year until those big storms come in

So happy I didn't spend money on a Full pass this year. Smart move to wait until it actually snowed before I spent anything towards that.

99$ towards a Boreal pass is about all I'd have been willing to spend by now.

My decision was whether to buy a Sierra pass for my winter break or go to Jackson Hole for 3 days of skiing with my school's ski club. So glad I'm headed to Jackson on monday for some actual skiing.

solid mix of rain/snow right now on the valley floor. every time i look out the window it's different. snow up top at least....ugh.........i'm getting out of town for a few days. time to find real snow

didnt compare, just said it didnt suck. if you think it does, you obviously have never seen a sucky park (think indiana or ohio circa 2002.) shit actualy did suck then, but it was still rad, as heavenlys 3 boot line is still rad even though its not freeway at breck.

Did anyone see me eat shit at northstar on the 27th? I slipped and landed on the dfd on the bottom of vista and broke 4 ribs

fucking amazing

Feeling dumb for buying the Squaw pass. Oh well, I'm sure I'll at least get the same value as if I had been buying lift tickets before the end of the season. My first winter in Tahoe in years and this is what happens, extremely disappointing.

I've been hiking mt rose summit the past couple weeks. Theres some rails set up about 15 minutes hiking in from the rest area. They're pretty hard to find. If anyone is down anytime soon just text me and we can plan on meeting up. Theres probably 10 or so features set up. Decent place for beginners. People who are good at rails probably wont enjoy it because they're kinda short. 775-848-4946. Let me know which ns member you are too

callout? just came back from my lunch break driving northbound on 395 in reno, blue subaru wrx with ski stickers on the back and two skis on the top. Pretty sure you saw my ns sticker on my subaru and raced up to me. any luck? we both got off on Moana and I think you went to Reno Mountain Sports.

Hella creepin

Haven't been to squaw this winter except for that opening day. Is it worse than alpine? I should just stick to N* but I can't do park due to 4 broken ribs.

First season where I can go to any big resorts (bought squalpine pass, work at n*, and got free sierra season pass from my school club) and there's an extreme record breaking drought. Fuck me

1" reported... even that one inch has been scattered to nothing. firm parks await, make sure to get your feet down under ya

From OpenSnow.com. Hopefully some snow is on the way.

Sat. 8 PM Update:[/b]

A very interesting day on the models. I wasn't able to see the new runs today until this evening and was nervous the models back tracked after I put out a forecast this morning. It was the opposite today. Remember the Canadian showing 4-5 feet of snow along the crest that we threw out this morning because it was an outlier? Well watch this on the other models today.

Here is the GFS 6z, 12z, and 18z showing increased precip with each run.

6z

12z

gfs-null--west_coast-150-A-totalqpf_white.png

18z

gfs-null--west_coast-156-A-totalqpf_white.png

So the GFS is up from 12-18 inches along the crest to 2-3 feet. The European is on the same trend today. Here is a look at the 0z and then the 12z runs. The Euro only runs 2 times a day.

0z

12z

The Euro is trying to drop 3-5 feet along the crest on the 12z run vs. 12-18 previously on the 0z run. The Canadian which was showing 4-6 feet this morning is then only one that decreased precip into the 3-5 foot range along the crest in line with the Euro.

cmc_total_precip_west_29.png

We threw out the Canadian this morning with the other models showing only an 1-1.5 inches of liquid vs 5-6 inches. This evening they are all showing 2.5-5 inches of liquid. Not a bad day for trends on the models.

This is the game we will play over the next 4 days until the storm arrives Thursday. We will check the trend each day. Hopefully we keep trending wetter not dryer. I am still VERY cautious about how much precip the models are showing. There is a nice moisture tap and a cold front pushing down from the North which are good ingredients. However, it is rare to get a big storm after this long of a dry spell. It is usually harder to knock down the ridge. The storm on Tuesday may be doing a lot of that though before the jet stream pushes South down the coast.

Keep saying those prayers...BA
