K maybe the moving the france thing was a bit ignorant, but if nobody joined the military it WOULD be a big problem.

the thing about the military is that they are always potrayed in a negative light. The military does so much good in the world. The first people to help out after Tsunaims and after Katriana were the military. The corps of engineers has made it possible for us to do allot of stuff, even getting to the ski hill. They bring aide to countries that need it, but you never hear about.

Wow do you think the Gov't likes handing out free tuitions? No, that's why you have to lie your life on the line in return. And just because one idiot thinks I'm clueless doesn't mean that I really am, which I'm not. Let's think about this for a second, if you could get FREE tuition to any college, and wouldn't have to go to war, how many people do you think would join the military? Tons. It's a scary thought about going to war, but you're gaining the respect from your country and also a nice little financial bonus from the whole deal. Oh, and you're brother can baffle me all he wants with his political science, that doesn't mean that you know shit. Don't give me this 'boo hoo I'm going to war' bullshit, he had a choice, it's not like he was drafted. I'd like you to know that 2 of my great uncles died in WWII without a choice and I'm not upset that they died because they were proud to be apart of somthing so honorable as the U.S. Military and served their country proudly.
 
Please, show me where I insulted anybody in the military, please. All I said was, if you don't want to go to war, don't join the military. I never insulted the intelligence or character of anybody in Iraq, so check yourself. And look what your doing, mocking my great uncles for dying in the war they didn't choose to fight in but when they were picked they manned up and gave their lives for it? not to fucking leach off the gov't to get a free college education, but your sitting here being a fucking hippocrite. It could have been my Grandpa, or your grandpa that died there, and guess what, you or I or anybody else wouldn't be alive right now, so it is a big fucking deal. And yeah I GUESS your brother has bigger balls then me for joining the military but that doesn't mean that you are anything braver, or more courageous than I am.

First- a military academy education is actually valued at $350,000 just to clear that up

Second- they are some of the best colleges in the world so it is well worth serving five (paid) years in the military to go there for free.
 
Leaching are you serious how is anyone joining the military leaching trust me go to basic training for 2 months then go through technical training we earn every fucking penny they give us!

And especially at an academy they live that life for 4 years and its pure hell...watch what you ignorant fucks say cuz u dont know how good u have it...Sorry i wanted to better myself and get an education and couldnt come close to paying it...so sure if i can serve 6 years for my country(and im sorry saying ur protecting it is not arguable because when we sign that line we dont know what is goin to happen so yes we sign to protect) and get a free education ur damn right im goin to do it!

i hate the american government for its environmental policies and the military is stupid if everyone could be chill we wouldnt need militarys and could spend $ on important things (like fixin tha spokane river which had 540X more than the allowd amounts of elad in '97)

Actually thats completely untrue.

This country and every other would benefit economically overall if they had no military budget. Instead of spending money on military expenditures we could instead invest it in different forms of capital. Such as technological capital like research to further agricultural or industrial production capacities. Or to invest in human capital like education in the workforce. Buying a billion dollar aircraft carrier will not help our country in the long run. It only wastes money that could be invested for the future. The "military industrial complex" which is the relationship between the government and industries tied to military production is INEFFICIENT. Most of that money actually ends up in corporate hands and is dispersed among the population.

Yes it is good that the military does provide opportunies to some people but it is in no way the best means to develop the economy.

Yes when u lay ur head down at night and dream of this perfect society where everyone is good and there is no violence or need for military then yes u would be correct...But now that u have awoken u should realize there have been armies wars and corrupt ppl since the beginning of time and the need for military will always be there..so shut up about this well if we just did away with the military and its budget shit
 
how about what you are saying is completely not on the same subject on what i said you dumbshit. I wasnt commenting on whether or not we need a military at all if you learn how to read. In fact i never even brought up that up in my post. I think that we need a military with our current leadership. It would be suicidal not to have one with all of the oppostion that we have created against ourselves. All i said was that it is in fact much less efficient to try to promote economic growth by expanding military expenditures. So how about you shut your dumbass mouth.

And I was also unaware that you could tell the future. Did you know that as the economies of nation states become more intertwined nations have less reason to go to war because the loss of trade will cripple so much that it will negate any positive outcomes resulting from the war. Or how about the idea of "democratic peace". No two democracies have EVER fought a major war against each other, so if democracy spreads then there is actually a good chance that military force may to longer be necessary.
 
And lets say u convince the many many countries to become democratic is it assumed that all its citizens then just follow blindly and terrorism no longer exists and their is magically no one left to fight..not to mention drug enforcement natural disasters and humanitarian aid is no longer needed also provided by the military
 
First of all, you never proved anything that I said was untrue. You just said we shouldn't invest in the military.

Yes, we spend millions of dollars on an aircraft carrier, but where do you think the money goes? You're fairly ignorant to the way the military industry works. See we don't just burn money and have an aircraft carrier. People have to make it, we have to buy the materials for it, we have to pay for maintaining it, etc. This creates jobs and ultimately an industry in which the MILITARY is affiliated with.

We also sell weapons and technology on a large scale basis. Not to mention the mass amounts of corporations that benefit off of military activity and growth.

Alot of companys makes tons of money off of war, like Halliburton. So weird that Dick Cheney was CEO of Halliburton before he was vice pres... Hmm.

Loyalty is only good when you are being loyal to yourself. If that means being loyal to your firned because they are your friends then so be it.

Honor is similar.

Patriotism is not smart or dumb. It has its place, and dont get me wrong, I love living in the US. In my mind im being patriotic by not joining the army. Im helping my country by not joining the army. As long as you have good reasons for being patriotic, and are not simply patriotic just because your told you should be.

Benifits financially... yea whatever. Why are veterians such a mess later in life? Why is my firend who joined the army compaining to me about how he was promised a certian amount of money and never saw it? He dropped out of college, and if he would have staid in and gotten a dagree, he probably would have been better off financially. besides, who cares if you have money when you never get to see your family or friends and you might die at any moment.
 
honesty is an important part of friendship. hes not overall stupid (nessisarly) however joining the army is a stupid thing for anyone to do.
 
Well when i turn 18 in just a couple months i'm enlisting for the marine corps. I think the military could be a good experience for anyone and thats why i'm joining. Its not about how stupid the government is or how fucked up george bush is, its about protecting our freedom that is rightfully ours and thats why i'm joining
 
i think next year when i'm off in college, and realize its not all its cracked up to be, i'm going to the air force. JEA

If you honestly think your protecting anyones freedom by joining the army at this point in history Im sorry for you. If anything, you are simply limiting your own freedom because you will be in the fucking army.

humm, I suppose thats not too bad. either way I dont think it sounds like much fun. if you want to learn some dicipline and survival skills, go do an Outward Bound course, they are a lot of fun, and probably more exciting then staying around in the same army base (bla). Then there is the whole money though though I suppose and I dont have much to say about that except for that if your doing it for the money then maybe the army would be a good choice.
 
I would hope we wouldn't have another draft, but if it happened i think i would join up. I don't really agree totally with the war going on, i just think at this point it is a fight for the people who joined up for that sort of thing. If the gov. moves to take in the general population then that is like a call upon the country because of dire circumstances, at that point I think I would have to willingly do my part. I would not be drafted.
 
This isn't vietnam or WWII, it's Iraq for god sakes, it's not like we're loosing people left and right here. Second, if your friend didn't get the money they had a contract on then he could sue them, and obviously patriotism honor loyalty and benefits are enough to make millions of people join the army, maybe they feel obligated after 9|11 too.
