War in the National Anthem

because it's a song that was written many many years ago and anyways, most americans are too fucking stupid to realize it's about war so they don't care anyways.

How can we have a separation of church and state if "god" is mentioned on the US currency and in out pledge of allegiance?

No clue, but I really don't care.
 
This too, to me it seems stupid on our government's part to let "god" be put on currency and in the pledge.

I personally think that "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie would be a much better anthem.
 
Oh lord... It was written during a war that helped establish our freedom. It doesn't glorify war, but rather showcase what our country went through to become free.

First of all, the war of 1812 didn't establish our freedom, it defended it.

What I am saying is we should be glorifying said freedom, not how we got it. Especially if it is war.
 
But maybe we need to acknowledge that with out war, we would not have the freedoms we do today. Perhaps the point of it is that we fought for it and we will fight for it.
 
Sure, we fought to become a free country. Let's be happy that we are a generally free country, not that war took place to get it. Also, we no longer need to fight for our freedom. It's become a given.

 
But the war of 1812 as the other guy brought up was started by you to expand your land into the north. Of course not being Canada at the time I can't say that we kicked your ass but we kicked your ass, you didn't really defend anything, the brits did even if there were attacks on both sides.

So I don't really understand your national anthem since you started it and nothing really changed, therefore you didn't really gain any independence, it just made people think that I guess.
 
Well, yes, you are correct. But, I'm talking more on the lines of war and the connection to freedom.

Or perhaps we use it because it stands as a symbol of the US's "strength" because, according to the song, "our flag was still there." Maybe it's a symbol of our dedication to standing up for what we believe.

I would imagine it has a greater meaning than just war.
 
We should be proud that we won the war to gain our freedom. we should definitely be proud that we fought for it and remember everyone who fought and died. we should be glad the war happened, because it was necessary, it formed our awesome ass country, and those who died fighting for it were willing to risk their lives for freedom. I really dont see why we shouldnt have it in our national anthem.and we do need to fight for our freedom. maybe not at this moment, but its definitely not a given, its at risk, and always will be, unfortunately fighting and war will always be necessary to keep it.

1.No, we should be proud of the freedom, the fact that we needed war to get it is an unfortunate vehicle.

2.Our country is (in essence) awesome, so why don't we sing about that?

3.We haven't fought a war to protect our freedom since i do believe 1812. It's a given.

I wish America had an anthem like Russia's. When you hear the Russian anthem you picture Muscle Bound communists in Olive uniforms smashing their enemies skulls with their bare hands. When you hear the US Anthem you picture an extremeley obese Tea Partyist riding a motorcycle with one of those goofy fucking fu man chu style mustaches eating a happy meal.
 
I don't think it's glorifying war though. I think the point is that even though there was destruction and war upon us, our flag was still there, making it though. This is a symbol of the United States. Meaning that no matter what you throw at us, were going to make it through.

it isn't war mongering, rather about national resiliency and freedom. Why must war be omitted? Must the past be silenced (pardon me: war silenced) because we weren't always jerking each other off?
 
This nation was founded on Christian values, and when they said "separation of church and state" they meant not allowing clergy to hold crucial roles in the government, or allow them to be the government like what had happened in Europe. No matter your religion or belief God is God. He goes by different names, forms etc. They dont say Jesus or Allah or Yahew, just God. Fucking liberal douche.
 
Every country should just adopt a version of the Russian anthem. Even if you dont understand what they are saying an it's not even your country you become overwhelmed in a tide of patriotism
 
Now that I'm off of mobile I can say what I really wanted to. To see the national anthem as "glorifying war" you have to be extremely pessimistic. Not ONCE has it ever crossed my mind that the national anthem is condoning or promoting war. The war of 1812 was that last-ditch effort by the British to regain their colonies and the fact that we continued to hold our ground and maintain our freedom is what the anthem conveys. When we are attacked on our own soil (War of 1812) we should be able to fight back for our freedom. The War of 1812 was like the cherry on top for America during the revolutionary period.

You are in high school aren't you? Christian values such as the protestant work ethic which was the basis of the New England economy and ended up becoming the American work ethic (hard work pays off) up until our grandparents generation. Now we are a country of self entitlement and laziness.
 
Also just because the Framers were mostly atheist, a very large percent of the country were devout Christians, which means they filled all the roles that those very influencial lets say 10-12 didn't. When they say separation of church and state they speak of not allowing clergy into government roles, or allowing the state religion to deal with legislation, the legal system, and running the government.
