Unpopular opinion thread skier's edition

Fisheyes with vignette are wack cause you need to film it absolutely perfectly or it just isn’t right, and jumps are almost a lost cause unless you tie yourself to the skier with a rope so you can keep up. I find myself using a less extreme wide angle way more then a fish lens nowadays, same effect but a little more forgiveness

I have an HMC150 with an Opteka fisheye, I zoom in at Z14 so there's less vignette and it looks good. I prefer vignette to no vignette. I had a t3i with a rokinon 8mm fisheye and it had no vignette and it's just not the same

Unpopular opinion but this type of video is annoying asf, like just skateboard at that point lol

Skiing shouldn’t be presented like skateboarding because it’s so fundamentally different that it just looks goofy 90% of the time.

I thought it would be common sense to find the edit as absolute garbage. That was the worst fucking thing I've ever seen. It hurt my eyes watching it. I didn't make it past a minute and a half. Did they eventually show some skiing in this skiing edit? I'm so intrigued! "Slow burn", yeah it was fucking slow alright.

skierman hates any person with remotely impressive fisheye clips and immersive long lens shots

Filming fisheye is a skill. When done right it's really sick, when done wrong, it's hard to tell there's anyone even skiing in the frame. It's a tool like anything else and isn't great for most jumps. It's a specific look that should be used in certain situations. I have done some cool fisheye follow cam jump shit but man it is scary with how close you have to be haha. Turns out sick though if you have the balls to be 3 feet from them in the air

14481018:Jems said:
then how should it be presented? there’s very few ways to actually differ from anybody regarding filming styles. should skiers be strictly filmed long lens shots with zero variability in zoom because it’s copying skateboarding? should any fisheye clip that isnt shit be invalidated because it was filmed like skateboarders do? literally every skill and technique that makes your filming look less shit comes from skateboarding. are you a filmer? if you think it’s annoying and goofy then what’s your solution?

“It’s an unpopular opinion I don’t need to elaborate”

your words not mine lol

idk the solution, but trying to recreate pussy gangster on skis is not it lol

that’s fair

but just about every crew hitting street in the past few years is filming just like skateboarders do which creates higher quality action shots

don’t you film on an hmc which has a massive reach on an opteka fisheye?

Yeah I had that same HMC setup with the opteka and the vignette was huge, I’d usually scale the image up to 114ish percent so it was just in the corners, the sensor in my camera was also kinda loose so it wasn’t symmetrical and looked weird without editing. I ruined a ton of footy once leaving it out of focus by zooming through it too so I kinda avoid that I still love that setup but like said it only works well in certain cases.

Use a DVX-FEWA bayonet mount wide angle quite a bit now instead and like it a lot more especially for follows on jumps, and got a hcx1000 last spring since my HMC pretty much fell apart

true, skiing doesn’t have a colton feldman or a bryden bowley. kinda tired of some of the “super 8” clips a lot of snowboarders throw in their vids though

bryden shoots real super 8 :). Super nice dude also. Absolute wizard with the cam and on the production side. all his videos have a beautiful patina. he’s also a pretty damn stylish rider too

the proliferation of contrarian trolls around here is annoying as fuck. I'm believe it's a because these sad ass MFers are so lonely and starved for some sort of attention, that any response to their post neg or pos helps fill the void in their pathetic attempt at life. HEY LOOK AT ME!! SAMMY CARLSON SUCKS! THOSE DUDES DON"T USE THE RIGHT CAMERA! it's just a cry for help that ultimately just makes me feel sorry for you more than hate.

Idk, I think a better way to film skiing would be like Dom / Karsten from this yuto goto cut.

Like, they are combining long lens shots with the dynamics of a fisheye and I think it looks amazing. I never see this style and I think it’s the perfect fit for skiing but also not really practical because it involves so much talent that it’s not as accessible as just mimicking Strobeast and fucking around with a fisheye without really knowing what ur doing. Ur not really wrong about anything but I’m just bitching about people not exploring as much as I would like

Sort of a BMX style of fisheye filming

as someone who loves to tour, and engages in it frequently, i agree with u.

homies be looking like some wealthy ass goofballs.

i love passing them on the way up on my heavy ass setup tho lol. the look in there eyes as they realize there 4,000$ touring gear doesnt actually make them that much faster is priceless. go to the gym if you want to be quicker uphill

cant lie tho, dynafit radicals are the best pin bindings on the market rn. lowkey boutta buy a pair

-sled skiing is sick, no doubt, but sleds can only go up a certain steepness with two people, otherwise you are doomed ghosting your sled down the hill.

-getting the nicest cols and pitches, you need to bootpack or skin from your sled anyways.

-lots of nice mountains ranges are in parks where no motorized vehicles are permitted.

the way i see it, while nice/light touring gear can make you quicker, most people buy it so its less effort. you can go higher/further on the same amount of energy.

There’s downhill performance sacrifice with lighter gear. I’d rather pull heavy skis to the top and be able to rip down.

Sleds are really fun. Just cause you might still have to boot or skin to get up the last 600-1000ft+ doesn’t diminish the pony ride

yea no doubt. it def depends on what youre doing tho. if youre walking far away from any sort of help, in less than ideal weather shituations, getting injured is just not an option. dragging someone just 5km from a trailhead can easily take like 10 hours to get them back. you can get really gnarly in the bc, but is it worth the risk?

my side country skis (faction prodigy 3.0, with shifts and ranger free 130s) can charge pretty hard, but i dont.

for sure. sleds are dope. i just dont get what sleds and dynafit bros have to do with eachother? are there actually any people out there that would pick skinning 10km over sledding 10km? a $2000 touring set up can reliably get you way further into any mountains than a $2000 sled.

I’ve had people talk down to me in bars cause I sled for touring/ski access versus just touring. That’s what it’s got to do with dynafit bros.

a huge advantage to having sleds is being able to self rescue in a crew.

a $2000 sled is asking for trouble unless you’re a better mechanic than most

they're just jealous that they cant afford a $20,000 mountain sled and a vehicle to haul it around. its kind of a no brainer if you live somewhere you can use it.

im just surprised. ive never heard of that before.

This has probably already been said, but people who can barely ski yet throw down the sketchiest cork 7s and front swaps piss me off to no end. I feel like they get no satisfaction from the fundamentals of skiing

This is how I feel watching Big Air events lately.

Those guys eventually get good though. Having the balls to try stuff feels like a bigger indicator of potential in the park than good fundamentals IMO.

A powder day (pauses for 3 seconds while brain attempts to load)... is like... a fresh canvas man... and the skis are my paintbrush... yeah.

Every ski movie from before 2012

if poorly written yeah, but alternatively pretending you don't care about something your passionate about like an edgy nihilist is just as cringe "yeah skiings cool i made important life choices based around it but its not that important or anything its just this dumb pastime"

The problem is a lot of people in the world (like at least 66%-75% of people) have no capacity to recognize artistic or creative values in things.

everyone has their own style, but future spins look so terrible. most spins above a 4 that aren’t off a big feature look ugly and penciled.
