Town Hall Debate

i have to say obama killed mccain with the whole bomb bomb bomb iran thing, that was straight pwnage! i'll be honest i didnt have much faith in b-rock because of all the shit talking everybodys been doing about him, but after watching this debate i really like the looks of what's going on.

"we need to prioritize, like a family" we arent a family!

He is proposing taxx cuts, 300 billion, with 4 billion tax cuts on big oil. "Thats taking away from the system." I'm going to change this, reform them all, make new policies "to make sure they are working for you"... the government is NOT working for us! i've said this a million times. we arent working for the government, they are not working for us. Milton Friedman: "Neither half of the statement expresses a relation between the citizen and his government that is worthy of the ideals of free men in a free society. The paternalistic "what your country can do for you" implies that government is the patron, the citizen the ward, a view that is at odds with the free man's belief in his own responsibility for his own destiny. The organismic, "what you can do for your country" implies that government is the master or the deity, the citizen, the servant or votary. To the free man, the country is a collection of individuals who compose it, not something over and above them. He is proud of a common heritage and loyal to common traditions. But he regards government as a means, an instrumentality, neither a grantor of favors and gifts, nor a master or god to be blindly worshipped and served. He recognizes no national purpose except as it is the consensus of the purposes for which the citizens severally strive.

The free man will ask neither what his country can do for him nor what he can do for his country. He will ask rather "What can I and my compatriots do through government" to help us discharge our individual responsibilities, to achieve our several goals and purposes, and above all, to protect our freedom? And he will accompany this question with another: How can we keep the government we create from becoming a Frankenstein that will destroy the very freedom will destroy the very freedom we establish it to protect? Freedom is a rare and delicate plant. Our minds tell us, and history confirms, that the great threat to freedom is the concentration of power. Government is necessary to preserve our freedom, it is an instrument through which we can exercise our freedom; yet concentrating power in political hands, it is also a threat to freedom.

i just read an article and this is what they said about milton friedmans book and FDR and obama's beliefs:
Those words were published in 1962, and yet, somehow, they presciently challenge 2008's candidate of change. In taking on JFK's vision of an American united by a singularity of purpose, Friedman also dismantles Obama's dream of each citizen burdened with an obligation to be responsible for all other citizens. By juxtaposing JFK's message of subservience to government with the ideal of freedom, Friedman destroys Obama's notion that government is the provider of opportunities and the benevolent master of our destinies. In other words, Obama's rhetoric is so shopworn and predictable, so mired in the politics and policies of the past, as to be rebuttable by a book from the year he was born.

How Can You Break the Habit f Debt and Easy Credit?
"Sharing the burden?" It's tough to ask a teacher to tighten her belt when someone else is living on the hump. We all need to make sacrifices (95% of America will see tax breaks).

I thought McCain should have spoken about how Bill Clinton promised everyone tax cuts but we saw increases around the board.

Huge unfunded liabilities (key questions, neither answered the question)
Great joke McCain, thats hilarious haha "I'll answer the question" then he cracks up. made me laugh
\

Privlidge , Right, or Responsibility. Great question.
The answers here basically outline the difference between Obama and McCain supporters IMO.
Obama- its a right. "we are wealthy enough", i dont care. it is NOT the governments job to mandate or give health care for all citizens. you all think you deserve this. you don't, what have you done to deserve it?
McCain- it is the governments responsibility to make healthcare affordable.

I just have a problem with all of Obama's thoughts that we are a family, helping our brothers across the nation, we have a right to the government giving us healthcare, and medicare, and this jazz, its bogus. The government is around to insure our freedoms, simply put. It is there to ensure that we can do what we want! I have to do laundry and get to class but these are my initial thoughts. yeah sorry thats long

word dude. word...

i am my brothers keeper, i am my sisters keeper... think about that for a minute........

i am all for charity, but its not giving if someone holds a gun to your head and says "give more money dammit"

doesnt Brack's half brother still live in africa on 2$ a month? ????

Im pretty damn sure that Obama did NOT say that the Government should be GIVING us healthcare, he just said that there would be government oversight to make sure that INsurance companies quit raping people.

He owned McCain though when McCain was talking about how you could travel to different states to get healthcare. And Obama basically said you are setting yourself up and that insurance companies will setup shop in certain states where the laws are lax and just continue to rape you.

"The government is around to ensure our freedoms, simply put" Yea...........righhhhhhtttttt, they have got their hands into everything now

this swings both ways though, here in MN i have health coverage, mandates that cover a whole list of BS... i believe on the list are, acupuncture, drug rehab, a bunch of nonsense that i will NEVER use, but i still pay for it to be covered....

if i want to go out and buy my own policy to cover basic medical needs who are YOU, to tell me i cant?

he said universal health care is RIGHT. tell me how that doesn't mean the government is giving it to us if they are there to ensure our rights are fullfilled?

yup. im sorry if you cant get a job or dont want a job thats not my problem same with people not having health care. you can get health care for like almost nothing every month as it is now. people just dont want to get a job and spend the money on it. im sorry if you cant afford health care i really am but i dont want to pay for your health care, its your health not mine.

nope, my grandparents actually. but im going to school and what not when im done with school i plan on paying for my own health care, as far as all my other bills go i pay for them myself.

soooo your point is drew?

I understand that the poll isn't biased based on the fact that it was taken by fox news, cnn, whatever...a poll is a poll.

However, polls show that far more democrats watch the debates than republicans. So if you're taking a survey of random debate watchers, chances are you will talk to more democrats. Also, where was the poll taken? If it's taken in a red state, it will have different outcomes than a blue state...etc. Just because the news isn't swaying the polls, doesn't mean other factors aren't.

I'm not necessarily saying these polls don't accurately represent the masses, just that factors should be considered, and there is a margin of error.

I have to disagree here. The first thing I commented on was McCain's afterbang. After his closing sentence of each clause he'd do like a drop mike thing, where he'd drop his arm and let the mic slide down his hand.

Yeah, that's yet another lie. After the article was originally published CNN actually went and found George Obama, who isn't really Barack's "brother", they've only met once and when George was very young (he's 20 years younger than Barack. They just have the same father, a father who left Barack's family when he was 2 years old, so the connection is tentative at best. Anyway, George said the media reports on the whole thing weren't true, made him very angry, and then was quoted as saying:

George Obama
:

I was brought up well. I live well even now. The magazines, they have

exaggerated everything ... There are some challenges, but maybe it is

just like where you [the reporter] come from, there are the same

challenges.

So getting treated by a hospital/doctor for diseases/injury/whatever is only for people with money? If you don't have money, you might as well just kill yourself if you get badly sick or get a bad injury??

From what I understand, Obama was saying that it is a right as an American to have access to good, affordable healthcare no matter what the injury or disease. He did not say that you should get it for free, but he didnt say that you should have to pay them out your ass either. Quit trying to put words into Obamas mouth.

He even gave an example of his mother who had bad cancer and on her last days instead of getting treatment or enjoying her last days, she was arguing with insurance people because they wouldnt pay for it. That is BULLSHIT in my opinion.

Rofl, and Kushblunts, what do you think taxes go to? To mostly help out other people, not much of what you pay in taxes actually goes to help YOU as an individual.

he said "half brother", and that's what someone who shares a parent with you is.

Anyway, what's your source, cause I googled it, and I can only just find the one article that says George is ashamed of Barack Obama, and that they've met just twice. Once when he was 5 years old, and once in 2006 when Barack Obama was on a tour of Africa.

so you can afford the ridiculous cars you drive, but not to pay for your own school and health care. man i cant wait till the real world hits you

Uh, you do have an effective right to health care. That's not an opinion, it's simply the correct answer. If you walk into an emergency room without a penny to your name and a stab wound, you'll be treated for said stab wound and will not have to pay for that treatment. Anything else would be pretty barbaric. The difference of opinion lies in how much the government should be assisting people in obtaining what health benefits, not whether or not health care is a "right".

ughh that John guy scares the shit out of me.

did he not say something along the lines of "Nuclear Energy is safe" or something like that.

one of my favorite quotes (this isnt perfect i dont remember it EXACTLY)

but basically he said

"Barack wants clean or safe nuclear energy or something like that".... what?

nm, found that cnn article.

Kind of weird though, a TON of news sites as well as magazines published the original interview with direct quotes of him saying that he's "ashamed of his brother", and had to "live off a dollar a month".

Perhaps what he said was taken out of context? So when he read the article it didn't come off how he wanted it to?

Stop........... These polls are useless unless it also gives the percentage of party affiliation in the poll.

As stupid as this might sound, I would love to see a poll on who watches more TV, Dems or Republicans. I believe that all of these polls are skewed because of who they poll. IN other words, many die hard Republicans (read Bosses) in my place of work don't bother watching, (they are out doing other things) yet the average person, Democrats (staff) was watching (mired in thier own muck at home).

Maybe an isolated dynamic related to my work, however I doubt it. The correlation of the "haves" vs. the "have-nots" to Reps vs. Dems is uncanny. Stereotypical? yeah ...

He's living off the support of his family. His family is choosing to support him, and could cut him off at any time. You don't choose to pay taxes. I see where you're coming from but I don't think you're using a fair argument, there's a difference. I don't think that kids should be attacked for the opportunities that have been provided by the people that support them. Someone in their family had to work for that money. Obviously they should be aware of the fact that they have opportunities that others don't, and try to think of what it would be like to be in someone elses shoes. But I don't think that Ryan should be made to feel like an ass because he has a hobby or other things that other people who are less fortunate couldn't have.

If you happen to see this.

What do you (or anyone else) think of Mccain wanting to buy up the bad mortgages and negotiate directly with the homeowner? It has been said many times over by nearly everyone, that the mess we are in was caused by poor lending practices.

you talk about how democrats have this superiority attitude, then make comments like this, which make you sound like a pretentious douchebag

nah the newest one i bought for my S4. fuckin dumbass oh and my rice grinder will shit on about 99% of the things you bring to me.

I think you are just as hypocritical for believing that everyone is your brother/sister, that everyone deserves the same things as you and not doing everything you can to change that. Why does the government have to do it? If you so firmly believe that everyone deserves their healthcare, get off the slopes, and start giving. Why do you make people who disagree do it as well? Why does everyone need to shoulder the weight of your belief?

and your point was that i dont think people should have health care. i think everyone should but im sorry I(my family) shouldnt have to pay for other peoples health care.

rofl, you may be right about these "die hard" republicans. A bunch of idiots who are so die hard republican that they dont even watch or care to watch what is going on and who is saying what, they just know to vote for the guy with the R!! The candidate could be talking about how he wants to send someone to pluto because there are aliens on national TV and your so called "die hard" republican boss would probably still vote for him.

Im sorry but NOBODY is too busy to take .5 hours to watch part of a debate on TV. Your boss is probably the kind of guy that wants Sean Hannity for President......

because they are busy paying for your 53rd car? and dont give me this working bullshit they worked not you

btw its not my fault my great great grandfather helped build half the east coast and i came out nicely from it. my family has done more for the people of this country than anyone combined on this website(i would guess).

dude are fucking serious i work for my dad every day i dont have school 8-4 building my aunts house....

yes. YOUR FAMILY. so your entitled to it? but other people arent?

but way to throw that claim in there as if that makes you above it all

entitled to what... i mean we have helped save at least 1000 acres of land in every state. that land is for the people to use, parks and recreations. thats just the start of it. building entire hospitals, i mean the list could go on but thats not what its about. we help americans hate, me or not whatever but we have helped millions of people.

entitled to though i dunno what you are talking about, health care? ya you should have health care if you OR YOUR FAMILY cant afford it for you to bad thats life. if you can afford a candy bar do you buy it?

i think your entirely missing my point. hes your grandfather, your in college, an adult, living off his fortune, so that you can have however many cars you have or what not. but other people need to work for their healthcare? hes got millions, pay a little more into the system so that everyone else can have some healthcare.

no i get your point 100%. why when people in my family worked hard to make money so they could have it for there own pleasures and desires does it need to be taken away because someone decides to have 4 kids and no job.

my grandfather worked hard so he could give his grandchildren what they wanted and help them do whatever they want to do with there life. ya im lucky my family is rich and i have 2 cars but what is so wrong with that?

first off, you clearly have poor reading comprehension.. (doesnt feel good when people talk down to you does it JD?)

i very clearly stated HALF BROTHER.

ok so we have 2 different story's.... i clearly sourced my claim, so bring it up against the newspaper.. and NO i did not source it with FOX news....

still look at the house (if you can call it that) that Obama's HALF brother lives in, its not exactly the Marriott.

DUDE THE POINT IS HE DISAGREES! He doesn't want to support people he doesn't know. Nor do I. The problem comes when you make EVERYONE shoulder YOUR(and drew and many many others) burden. Why do some have to pay unwilling more than you who actually believes in where its going? Why can't you do it through non-governmental organizations? Stop forcing me to lead your fight.

ya exactly im lucky. if you arent lucky you better do something about it other than rely on me to pay your bills.

hahahaha ignorant statement of the day award. im sure they decided to have 4 kids and no job, they thought it would be enjoyable. people dont really have control over their place in our society, the rich dominate the poor get fucked (note: i am not saying your grandfather specifically helped fuck people over), so its the least the rich can do to contribute to the people who are stuck in the lower class. its not like the extra taxes are gonna suddenly kill him, if he can afford to send you through college and buy cars, he can afford the extra taxes just fine

if u have a low paying job or no job why have more kids is that really going to be enjoyable trying to raise 4 kids with no money... no. obama said he was poor and had nothing growing up. he lived in american and has seemed to do very well i bet his kids have health care i bet he has health care and he was once poor.

whee, find the one in a million who succeeded. the point is the majority of people cant control where they end up. and how do you know that that person had 4 kids after they were poor? theres so many circumstances you arent taking into account. but whatever. its just gonna be me and you arguing back and forth, because you think your entitled to money your ancestors made, but others arent.

It is not a moral imperative. If you believe thats true you are just as immoral as me. You spend on your interests (skiing) just as KUSHBLUNTS indulges on his, just as I do on mine.
I seriously don't see why those Fortune 500 CEO's have to lead the charge (with more money of theirs used, AND that you are waiting for them to give for healthcare, before you personally do on your own account) in what you want.

i dont think so, i think we have a difference in news sources...

the telegraph (sourced from vanity fair) said George Obama, (half brother to barack) was living in poverty, and doesnt like his half brother...

CNN is reporting that the situation is different.

"He has only met his famous older brother twice - once when he was just

five and the last time in 2006 when Senator Obama was on a tour of East

Africa and visited Nairobi."

interesting...hmmmmmm.....

kush, what sort of opinion would you have of your grandfather if instead of passing on the wealth to you, he handed it off to two complete strangers?
