The Painkiller epidemic...

There was the Crack epidemic in the 80's, the heroin epidemic, and the hippie movement in the 60's (lsd, mushys and ganja). Then around 2000 when oxycotion came out there was a big epidemic thats still going on in alot of places but people don't really hear alot about it really. But around where i live there are alot of people hooked on these pills (oxys, hydros, morphine, fetanol, perocet, etc).
People snort, smoke, swallow, or smoke these pills. Most of them are basically synthetic heroin that are usually easier for people to get ahold of then actual heroin. They are very very addictive. I have friends that are hooked on them and I've dealt with a slight addiction that I have recently over come. They fun at first but you dont really realize how addictive they are at first and it comes on very quickly. They really bring out the worst in some people. People will steal, screw over and do whatever they need to do to get the pills that they need to feed their addiction, its truely sad to see expiecally when at one time they actually needed the pills for a legitimate reason then when the doctors take them off they are forced to get them on the streets.
The government has tried to do things to make it so people couldnt abuse the pills as much such as adding a speical coating to certain pills so you could not crush them or adding tylenol so they werent as appealing to snort you cant smoke them (to my knowledge but i have never smoked or shot up a pill). But they still cant eliminate the pills themselves because people legitimately need them for pain. Which is a very sad thing. Hopefully they can devlop a painkiller that is non addictive and works. The pills are also harmful to the body hurting the liver, brain, kidneys, heart and other areas of the body. The pills that are cut with actmetaphin(sp) which is basically tylenol are espiecally harmful the the liver and when drinking on them are super damaging to the liver it causes perment damage.
I really hate to see people get addicted to these pills and the reason I am writing this post is to help spread knowledge to people because most people dont really know a lot about this so hopefully you learned something you didnt know and it will help you out at some point. Please spread the word and if you have any friends that have a painkiller addiction try to help them. Sorry for the super long post!
Any thought, stories, or ideas?

yup its fucked imo. kids arnt smoking weed as their first drug anymore, theyre snorting pills. just another drug generation thats all.

persoanlly ive never done pills and have no desire to. ill stick to my trees. they havent done me dirty yet.

Yeah and the worst part is most of the time they are easier and some times cheaper because they are in the parents, grandparents, or whoevers medicine cabinet and they never realize that a couple are missing. Like I said I recently got over an addiction to them and its a very quick addiction and its very hard to get over. But the best thing is their are drugs to help with overcoming the addiction such as suboxone which is an opoiod which is still addictive but not nearly as addictive and it contains an opiate blocker (opiates are the addictive substance that are in heroine and most painkillers) so if you do a pill it wont affect you.

I know some kids who do Oxy, Vicodin, whatever, and it's horrible. I never get near that isht. I had my wisdom teeth out last year, and I didn't take any (the surgery actually went really well... I ate a steak the next night). I just hate seeing kids getting hooked on pills.

I used Vicodin once when i was prescribed it for having teeth pulled and I honestly didn't like it. It just put me on the couch and made me feel useless. I never took it again.

At least when I'm baked on a couch my mind is full of thoughts

I could go for an 80 about now. Too bad they're gelcaps now.

Like anything, moderation. That shits real easy to get sucked into. You have to actively make sure you don't get carried away. I know many people who are dead/in jail/hopelessly addicted. It can be ugly.

But they're so good!

not so funny story about those meds. Some friends of a family friend (I've met, just don't know well) were out of town one weekend and their 18ish year old son was at home. He decided to have a party of course and so a whole bunch of people showed up. The dad had recently been prescribed oxycontin for knee surgery I think it was and didn't end up needing too much so the rest of the bottle was sitting in the bathroom cupboard. Needless to say, some people found it and started snorting it. One girl, who was 15 or 16, took way too much and managed to od and kill herself on it. No one actually knew she was dead till the next morning (bunch of retards thought she was just passed out and would come round). then the parents came back to a dead underage girl in their house. Then to make things worse, because she was underage, the parents were held responsible for it and the parents of the dead girl ended up sueing them for something or other. just a shitty shitty situation

throughout my many travels to visit my friends at countless colleges, i have seen it everywhere, its bad

a huge YEP - pain killers in general stay away from. yeah they are good, they are too good, just makes u not care about anything but the drugs.

I doubt they will ever make painkillers that aren't addictive, because the human body will always find the feeling of painkillers awesome and therefore be addicted to them.

i would agree with you, they are super easy to find and super addicting. they are also super easy to overdose on which is the scary part. i went through the "oxy" stage a couple years ago. just blowin so much, wasting away, getting super unhealthy. it was just shitty and costing aton of money so i stopped.

havent really done alot of prescription shit since then, but i got knee surgery a couple weeks ago and blew through my bottle in a couple days. it was a fun couple of days

i have been prescribed oxy and vicodin and i really really hated it. made me super nauseous and i just threw up a ton. fuck that shit.

seen many of my friends lives ruined over pills. constant rehab trips or visits to jail and they're right back into the shit no matter what.

i've had supposed "good" friends beat me trying to buy bud so they could go buy pills and shit...

entire town i live in has hit an epidemic pretty much and it's sad really. everyone is pathetic and a fucking thief, when i was smoking i couldn't buy weed anymore without every dude around trying to push pills as well cause everybody is doing em...

currently have many addicted friends and recently had a rather good friend overdose and die on opana's..normal amount he took everyday for a long time, and one night just killed him.

never tried pills and have no desire, seeing your friends not be able to function and falling asleep in front of you is pretty annoying and even if it is fun, just not for me. rather see people blowin rails of ladie any day than see them on pills.

also i always hear friends say how hard it is to get off of them even when they want to...so pick your drugs wisely, and if you can handle it...moderation is key

i was thinking this same thing the other day. i know a lot of kids that get addicted to oc in high school. dont try that shit even once

I just had my acl reconstructed and they had me on oxys and pers only for about three days, but even after that time, i could feel a slight addiction forming. they're scary shit!

They had a guy who was at one time an addict come to our school and give us the whole don't do prescription drugs deal. He claimed he was so tolerant that he had to take 40 80mg pills to get the same feeling. Of course he had lost a bunch of teeth and really fucked up his mouth because of the drugs, so when it came time to have teeth pulled and get that shit fixed he couldn't take any painkiller because he was clean at that time. That's all I can remember from it.

Prescription drugs really are terrible, especially since they're so addictive. I have absolutely no desire to ever try them.

i just had knee surgery 2.5 weeks ago and was perscribed percocets. I stopped taking them after about 5 days because they honestly made me feel like complete shit. i dont know how people could get addicted to them.

I used to say only weed for me, then I tried shrooms and was like oh fuck, this is really fun. Then I did X, and was like holy shit that was the most fun of my life. The key is moderation. I can't say I've never done pills, but I try to stay away from them. I have way too many personal stories to share of people ending up in jail/dead/living with parents to support their habit. Shit is fucked.

watch the movie Trainspotting and you will get it. opiates are for people who want to be able to choose when they feel good as opposed to waiting for random moments of natural endorphin rushes that are usually unexpected. The thing is, we easily have enough opiates to sustain a huge population of addicts, so in my view its not really a problem. particularly, I think the war on drugs is the problem, because it drives the price of drugs up and puts innocent people in jail. Healthwise, i opiates are relatively not to harmful especially when you compare them to the side effects of cholesterol meds that are always in comercials. the main problem with opiates is shortage of supply, which should not be a problem. I know many opiate addicts who are functional and very successful in life. oxycodone however i have a beef with because i think it has many bad side effects compared to other opiates and frpm

almost dropped out of college or failed a few classes my final semester while dealing with a norco addiction. I had the norcos from overzealous docters(at my instistence) after jaw surgery. I had a vicious cycle going on: i would take adderall(personal scrip) in the morning to help me study/wakeup, and then norcos in the evening to calm me down and help me sleep...then addy in the morning to help make me coherent...then norcos at night to bring me down.

It got to the point that i would miss all my classes before noon, for weeks at a time...but i would do good work, and well on tests thanks to addy and good friends. I finally had to talk to one of my proffs about why my behavior was so different(i used to never miss class, and always go to office hours because itt was the only way i could get by)and i just told her that i was dealing with some painkiller issues stemming from the jaw surgery.

Her calling me out gave me a wakeup call, and i weaned myself off of the norcos in 2 weeks. It was tough, but i had straight busted my ass for 4.5 years to get my engineering degree and didnt want this little hiccup derail all of that.

Im lucky though, i have a friend who used to make enough money selling dro to put himself through a 50k/year college, but he dropped out cause he started trading the bud for pills. sad, sad story, cause he was on the block for 3 years saving up(and going to a JC) so he could go to college. now he just kicks it at home, and barely makes enough money to get by, the rest is spent on pills.

watch the movie Trainspotting and you will get it. Opiates are for people who want to be able to choose when they feel good as opposed to waiting for random moments of natural endorphin rushes that are usually unexpected and therefor not enjoyed as fully as they could be. The thing is, we easily have enough opiates to sustain a huge population of addicts, so in my view its not really a problem. Particularly, I think the war on drugs is the problem, because it drives the price of drugs through the roof and puts innocent people in jail. Healthwise, opiates are relatively not too harmful especially when you compare them to smoking or the side effects of cholesterol meds that are always in comercials. The main problem with opiates is shortage of supply, which should not be a problem because the world could easily supply billions of addicts. I know many opiate addicts who are functional and very successful in life.

I only used vicodin after a surgery. All I can remember is watching the same scooby-doo episode like 5 times..Never again.

I do, however, have a beef with oxycodpne (oxycontin, percoset) because compared to other opiates they have much more bad side effects. I can spot an oxy addict from a mile away by their swollen face, sleepy facial expression, and swollen bloodshot eyes. Also from my experience friends who prefered oxy ended up lokking like shit from an observers perspective, whereas my friends on hydros etc did not have these effects. I personally feel that opiate addiction is not going anywhere, so long as doctors give them after pullin wisdom teeth etc. because giving a 1 month supply of opiates for wisdom teeth is like telling someone they can have sex for only once in their life. Once the cats out of the bag, its out to stay, and its imposible to keep the cat in the bag. But opiate addiction needn't be a problem; does anyone ever say we have a nicotine epidemic? No because its legal and the same would happen to opiate if they were legalized. Some might argue "you can od and die on opiates whereas you cant on cigarettes. but

you know what the saddest part is? i went to the student health center with a killer ear ache and the doctor prescribed me vicodin. on a college campus, really? i can't complain, i love the fuckers for when i take a hard fall skiing or riding downhill and i've never been "hooked" but if you can get them for having an earache it would be really easy to abuse the system.

woah, ive had earaches due to sinus infections that literally made me cry they were soo painful, and i have a very high tolerance for pain.

however student health( aka student death) centers on campuses push pills like crazy. i know folks who went in there with a toothache, or a jammed finger and came walking out with percocet. thats just how it is.

But you can easily od and die from alcohol and that is legal... so the only problem i see is the drug war which has costed trillions over decades and has only made ruthless assholes( in some cases) become drug dealers. I think decriminalizing and educating children about the dangers of opiates along with alcohol would be the best and most efficient way to solve the problem, and also save many lives. For example, telling kids that fentanyl is 100x stronger than morphine might keep them from swallowind fentanyl patches and dying. Education and responsibity and easy cheap availablity i think are the answers to the opiate proble in america. From my personal experience opiates brought me out of a deep depression, and even tho it had been a bumpy ride, i dont regret choosing that path.

solid post. ive known some really good kids that have turned into little shitheads over these drugs, doing anything they can to get their fix including trying to beat me for money

'm not categorically anti drug and i hate when people blame their shit on drugs ("weed made me lazy! that's why i don't have a job!") and people can do these things while being productive good people (it's crazy how as you get older you learn how many people are doing smack without anyone knowing) but the fact is pills have a strong track record of making people idiots and a lot of them need to wake the fuck up

i'm about to have to sit down a friend's brother and tell him to clean his shit up asap, and i'm sick of having these fucking interventions with people that don't give a shit about anything around them except their fix

meanwhile people are still getting scripts left and right while in some states you can still get in serious trouble for smoking a j. straight retarded

Luckily i was never really in a place where pk's were a big scene. I already have a fear of taking medicine. Like i can take pills fine i just don't like medicine just a phobia i guess. The only medicine i have ever used to get high was codeine when I make a purple drink about once or twice a year when i get a perscription. Other than that my medicine is Ib profin and weed. I don't trust anything else. I have a buddy who was into pk's before i met him he has a very addictive personality so I heard he was using them again at school and it pissed me off. I just don't see the draw in that really. Thats just my opinion though. I personally like psychedelics and thats about it the occaisional roll (last night at skrillex) but never got into medicine. I know people who are into xanax too which always was stupid to me just because I have no idea why blacking out and not remembering shit of what you did while you were high seems like a fun time.

I've never really understood the painkiller epidemic, but maybe its just because I've never felt the addiction towards them. After a few surgeries I always kept the extra pain killers and would take them whenever I felt like it, or blew them. As soon as they were gone I had no craving for them and have never bought any from my dealer. From vicodin to perc to oxy, I've had a lot of them all. They're certainly good, but once they're gone, they're gone and I move on.

i know some kids who have/currently abuse painkillers. Most of them are also battling depression and severe insecurity and feelings of self-loathing. They just seem sad all the time. And it really makes me sad. ill stick with weed.

Pills in general. Adderall is nuts. Sooooo many people, literally, 4.0 students abuse it to study and shit. And the side-effects are scary. I have a friend who goes fucking nuts when he's coming down. Cold sweats and anxiety, he kicked my bro out of a car because he took an extra bong rip.

The T.V. show House is terrible.

While using the narcotic drugs as a character trait of Dr. House it illustrates and rationalizes for addicts that even high paying professionals can get away with it and it is cool and all. While Dr. House is a crippled dude, the show doesn't need to promote drug use so much.

I believe there is a pill epidemic. With the # of doc's writing narcotic prescriptions it is too easy to make opiates or benzos more than just a once in a while habit. People take pills to get fucked up, and as luck has it these people also like to drink usually. So they get all fucked up and next thing you know wicked car accidents happen, date rape, people die, people get aids.

All because of Dr. House
