Surfing thread? Surfing thread.

Anyone planning on getting into the water this winter? I need a new board, i was planning on balling out and buying a brand new setup, but i think maybe ill just buy another used board, and maybe a used foamie for shit days. anyhow hopefully ill make a couple trips to the island for the legendary winter swells.

I surf all winter, but in NJ. If by island you mean hawaii then... So jealous. Enjoy needing a wetsuit top at most. I'll here in my 5mm suit. Also had no idea the JJF movie came out. Gonna have to get that. And apparently it's just not going to snow or even be cold here in NJ, so surfing will be my thing.

Gonna go pick up a blank on saturday. I'll be basically redoing the short, stubby teal striped board I have in the thread in my sig. Plan is for updated bottom contours, change in volume distro and fancy vector net on the top, among other things. Got some purple and white resin pigments for this one. Hoping the carbon in the vector net shows through a bit.

Got just over a month til I'm back home in Aus and can surf again. Not having the option to go surfing really makes you want to go surfing so much more, can't wait to hit the water again :)

Ahaha no way! I meant Vancouver island off the coast of Vancouver B.C, I will also be sporting the 5mm, with booties.

Also super stoked to see the final product of this new board, keep us posted!!

I actually had no idea there was a vancouver island in addition to regular vancouver. I just always think of somewhere warm when people say islands.

I don't even mind boots. I feel like a lot of surfers don't like wearing them. I've skateboarded a lot longer than I've surfed for so some sort of foot covering is normal as far as I'm concerned.

I'll hopefully be making some Van island trips this winter. Would like to check out Jordan and Sombrio as I have never surfed there before. I've had some really fun days at north chesty in the spring and fall. But it would be nice to surf a point break in Canada for once, which i hear Jordan river has.

transitioning from surfing every day all summer in southern california to not surfing once since august thanks to the move to idaho has been tough, but the mountains are opening so cant really complain!

I'll probably have work. Definitely gonna drain my phone battery watching when I can.

I'm calling MF to win world title. He's just so consistent and so good. I don't think Medina will bitch out if it's big but we'll see.

threads, been wanting to get more into surfing for a long time. my buddies surf a TON and i just need to get gear basically. been surfing a few times with them. one thing iv learned to hate is surf culture around here. so many grimy grumpy old dudes who yell at you even when youre doing everything right and not busting their line. also learning to surf in washington aint easy.

Sweet winter surfing vid from where I'm from randomly popped up on the inertia, check it

On a side note, View from a Blue Moon dropped this weekend and I'm thinking of picking it up. Has anyone snagged it yet? Thoughts?

It's so good, best 13 dollars I've spend in a while.

The majority of surf culture is pretty salty (No pun intended). Once you learn the rules of the water it is pretty easy to stay out of peoples way and not get yelled out. Or you can just take command and drop in on everyone to state your authority.

Fucking good. The past pipe masters it wasn't big enough to separate the boys from the men. Medina is going to shit his pants

Annnnnnd apparently they're not running today for whatever reason.

Owen Wright is looking good too. He killed it in all the bigger wave, barrels type events. Although a lot of people would have to lose for him to win world title, I think.

Yeah I was watching dawn patrol and I'm like what the fuck... But it'll be good to see some big ass waves.

lol you watched vfabm? because in the movie they literally say "he just goes by john now"

also he is only john on his birth certificate, when i said that he goes by john i was kidding because they say that in the movie obviously everyone still knows him as john john

Going to Mexico in a week for Christmas. Hopefully get 2 or 3 days of surfing in. I am very excited to not use a wetsuit.

Shitty dood.

on that note: Poly vs. Epoxy? which do you prefer and why?

A lot of old shapers cling to poly, but a lot of old shapers are also afraid of anything new.

I will never buy or make another poly board again. It's a brittle resin that requires more repairs given the same circumstances. The only plus is that it's cheaper, but it's also more toxic to work with and smells like shit. Epoxy is far more elastic, so when it's dented or dinged you won't get the spider cracking and water intrusion. I personally think the chemistry behind epoxy is better than that of poly, as well. This goes for whatever core material epoxy is covering. Obviously poly and eps cores don't play well together, but pu and epoxy is a nice combo. If you look at most other high performance composite products of this sort, I'm pretty sure most of them use epoxy, not poly.

As far as feel, I'm not pro... I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference between two otherwise identical boards until I damaged them. Flex can be built into either construction, although epoxy is more flexible and it'd be easier to get your desired result. And by identical I mean identical, not eps/epoxy versus poly/pu. People make that comparison all the time but it's not really a good one, since eps is vastly different than poly. People also use epoxy to mean eps/epoxy, but not all epoxies are eps cores.

In other news it's almost certain I'll miss the finals of pipe because I'll be at work. Also the latest creation to come out of my garage is about 1.25 pounds lighter than its predecessor. This is before sanding of the fill coat, but also without wax and a traction pad. I think it'll still end up lighter though.

I have to get a better image once it's all sanded and finished up.

Pretty sure it was snapped at deadmans or winki in Manly. I dunno I haven't really talked to him much about it

Epoxy for days. Maybe for a beginner poly is better because it's cheaper. But I'd always prefer the extra flex and power that comes from epoxy. As well as the added durability factor.

Yeah so they better finish pipe before 4 eastern. Otherwise im gonna miss it.

I'm about to finish sanding that board. I think im gonna try it tomorrow morning, without a traction pad, but i have boots on so it shoild work well enough.

Fuck yes Medina is out of the world title!!!!!!!! inb4 brazzos complain about mick getting overscored

Mick deserves it as far as I'm concerned. He's killed it all year.

And apparently there was an issue with the board I've shaped. The vector net didn't quite wrap around the rail properly in one spot which resulted in a floating bond, aka a nonstructural element of the lamination. So I had to cut that glass out and it's gonna need a fix. It's only like an inch by inch spot, but, it needs a fix. So I won't be testing it tomorrow morning, which sucks because it's gonna be the exact conditions it was designed for. Guess I'll give its predecessor one final day, assuming the new one is better than it, that is.

Frick, I have to go to work in 20 minutes. Bummed about that. But yea im rooting for Mick, he's had a wild year, and whats happened in the last couple days... Strong dude.

Dub post

going to work :( but De Souzas final wave was sneaky, Kerr had priority , definitely an exciting ending.

Fanning vs. Medina getting started now, bummed ill miss it. Highlights when i get home i guess.

Never the day I thought would come where someone does an air to win a heat at pipeline. Such bullshit, the shark attack pretty much fucked up everything. If they did the right thing and shared the points Adriano would have needed to win at pipe. Now if he does win then I will give him all credit but that's some bullshit right there.

I was at work but i watched the heats. I saw him go for the air and was like god dammit... Can't knock ADS though. He did do well this year, i was just kinds epxecting it to be Mick.

I surfed chest to head high waves this morning with a few tight barrels on offer. Havent gotten to surf anything good for a while due to work, and unfortunately that board i was shaping wasnt done. Still a great time.

Thinking about getting a longboard for mellow days, any recommendations for a cheap reliable board? I've been checking craigslist and I just don't know what to look for. Thanks

Any idea on length or style? I mean you can't go wrong with something of this sort

Bing-California-Pintail.jpg

More info on your preferences/level of skill would be good, of course.

It's a bing california pintail. There's also others with the wide point less far back if you're into that or more neutral things. But if you don't stray too far from a neutral design then it'll do most things reasonably well. Not necessarily that specific board, but, something along those lines is what I'm thinking. That one just came to mind. I personally ride a not so long 8' one I shaped, single concave to flat to vee in the tail, pintail, wide point back, reasonably skinny, very hard, down rails that are foiled quite thin in relation to the deck. You can see it in the thread in my sig.As far as cheap... there's little chance of a cheap new longboard, so go used and find something without water in it or too much other damage.

Also it was giant last saturday. It was easily the biggest I've ever seen my break. One guy pulled into one that was easily twice his height once he went to bottom turn. The lip smashed him and he said it was the worst wipeout of his life.

just went for my first surf in over a year yesterday when I got home. Holy fuck I was so weak in the paddling department

Anyone score during Jonas?

I think I can get some decent swell on Thursday. Going to be cold as SHIT but I'm pumped!

Anybody use these fancy blackstix ones? From a hydrodynamics standpoint not flat fins should be better. Intended use fits the description, meaning speed generating in smaller surf and general twitchiness. I've worked some extra hours and I feel like buying something expensive and surf related... Plus I actually need fins.
