Stop using Adblock!

Quote from MrBishop in another thread:

"Oh yeah bigtime. I mean the ads are basically 95% of the revenue on here. The clothing and donations are cool, but they're a drop in the bucket compared to the ads.

That is one reason we've been establishing revenue share programs with content creators. We've got a great ecosystem going here that makes solid money. We want the people to be able to share in it.

Basically the only way to replace this revenue in a solid fashion would be through subscriptions. Simple subscriptions could give us the flexibility to consider ad-free models, or recoup the losses from AdBlock.

AdBlock on Newschoolers is like pirating ski movies. When you do it, you harm the entity's ability to survive and keep doing awesome stuff. "

They are losing about 80k a year on people using Adblock. So let us just get through the 10 seconds of tampon commercials to keep ns as it is!

Ive had this fucking ad for I dont even remember how long now. I seriously prefer the nasty FD ads before this one. I understand that ads are a huge part of the site's income, but... yeah, that ad just pisses me off.

Anyone who bitches about a stupid ad on a website needs to go fuck themselves. Anyone who uses ad block on NS should be banned. Do you guys even understand how much revenue you generate by surfing NS for an hour with no ad block? You guys are fucking pathetic.

Uhhhhh aggressive much! What if people genuinely don't understand how much revenue they generate by seeing them? Are they still pathetic then? No need to just flame people who are (in general) annoyed by adverts regardless of whether they're on newschoolers or not. This just needs to be explained in a civil manner to educate people, rather than hurl abuse.

Actually mine has an option that I didn't even know about! It allows you to disable it for certain domains.

If they don't understand it then they are extremely ignorant. They loose $80,000 a year that equivalent to like 100 members surfing an hour a day with ad block on, its fucking insane. Turn off ad block!

I'm curious how they discovered they're losing 80k a year? Or is it just a projection

Are you insinuating that everybody should have these facts in their common knowledge and if they don't then they are ignorant? Where is this information publicised, on the front page of NS? No, so how are we meant to magically know that. I had no idea of the sums of money involved. Out of interest I wonder what is the percentage of users who do use Adblock? Personally I don't, but nevertheless I would defend people who do, purely because some people don't want to be peppered with adverts the whole time. And if other people get uptight about that fact, well that's their problem. I donated to show my appreciation, maybe more members could do the same. I'm not trying to be difficult by the way, just sharing opinions

Donating 20 bucks doesn't do shit dude, stop acting like you're better than anyone else.

I just get heated people still use ad block and get so mad about ads. It blows my fucking mind and ya i get a little mad about it.

people who are saying that donators should get ads removed:

donating is not going to create all the revenue they need.

hence why bishop said in the quote in OP that ads are 95% of the revenue

Ok if by me suggesting it would be cool for people to donate (seeing as the OP quoted only 5% revenue from donations,) made you think that I'm trying to act like I'm better than anyone else then sorry because that's not what I meant at all. The only point I really wanted to make was that its not fair to call people pathetic or ignorant if they're not savvy with the value of adverts to sites like this and what the implications are for blocking them. Just teach them

Believe me, you're not coming across as someone who thinks they're better than anyone else.

is there a adbolck plugin that just hides them and not block, making the add people think that we saw it.

Firstly I'm pretty sure that's fraudulent, and secondly that wouldn't solve the problem of "slowing down ns", as they'd still have to download the ads from the ad provider

im pretty sure its not fraudulent to make a non profit program that would just visually hide it, the script code stuff would still run, or just put a white box over the add.

Maybe if you fuckfaces wouldn't allow ads to be displayed on here advertising vaporizers and FD wear with their half-naked chick ads that make it look like I'm surfing a porn site. Then, I might enable ads.....

what most people don't even realize is that A LOT of ads hurt your privacy and collect information from you without even clicking on them. for instance, NS uses Chartbeat, DoubleClick, and Google Analytics, along with a few widgets (that i don't have blocked). if you don't mind having your info tracked for the sake of NS or any other site making a few bills, by all means, good on you. personally, i don't like the idea of anyone making money off of tracking me online, even if, by association, that makes money for the sites i frequent.

the way i see it, there's one reason to have ads turned on, and at least 3 reasons not to, aside from the obvious one that the ads look (or, glob forbid, sound) like shit most of the time and are annoying and probably have adverse effects on your brain. however, i am confident there are more than enough people out there generating revenue by being tracked online to make up for the fact that i'm not.

i get that it's profitable and almost EVERYONE does it, but that doesn't make it ethical.

ok I'm a huge noob and I've always wondered this.

How does having adds on a website generate revenue ?

and does traffic make money to the domain owner or what ?

Companies pay for having their ads shown on the website. The less time they are shown the less money they pay.

Therefore NS is losing a hell af a lot of money on people using adblock

Hahahahaha.

Sorry I'm "costing" NS a few extra cents of profit per year by blocking all the garbage ads on the site. I don't really give a shit.

the ads arent always just from stuff you search dipshit.it's often related to stuff on the page you're looking at or just random.

I get the same ads to, and I've never smoked once in my life. Weird stuff. I don't get to hurt about any of the ads though. Any time my dad's seen like an FD or that new personal trainer add, I get something like this:

The ads have never really bothered me much.

There are some good ads to. Bloom's recent sale ads let people know of a pretty awesome deal, and I almost hopped on that one. And D-Structure always has been using NS banners to advertise sales, and I'm game for that. Have gotten a lot of great deals from there because I seen a banner on NS. For that reason alone I've left ads on.

oh, its basically a godsend everywhere else on the internet. But seriously, turn it off for NS. We are the ones the generate revenue for the site, and not doing that is pretty damn selfish.

Math time!

"Newschoolers loses 80k per year from people using AdBlock"

According to worthofweb.com, NS gets 25,862,040 page views per year and generates $77,400 per year, so almost exactly half of the users use AdBlock.

Assuming revenue from ads is closely related to page views, each page viewed without AdBlock gives NS $77,400/(25,862,040/2) = $0.00599.

According to valuesite.org, Daily Unique Visitors is 17,360 and Daily Pageviews is 104,160. That means the average NSer views 104,160/17,360 = 6 pages per day.

6 pages viewed per day x $0.00599/page x 365 days/1 year = $13.12.

In conclusion, not using AdBlock lets NS generate about

  • $13 in revenue from ads alone every year PER USER.

And that's only 6 pages per day.

Take that how you will, but the numbers show that turning off AdBlock greatly helps out NS. I wouldn't say it makes you a dick by any means if you use it though.

Feel free to check/correct my calculations.

This is a purely hypothetical question - I've always had ads enabled on NS. Always will. But how has somebody not come up with an ad blocking application that tricks the ads into thinking they're being seen? Should just be an issue of sending back false packets, right?
