Starting my university's first fraternity

So the title basically says it, but I'm kinda on the fence and wondering what NS's thoughts on this situation would be.
There is currently a ban on fraternities at my University (UVIC) in BC. Some guys I have known since elementary school decided it would be cool to start up a chapter of DKE out here. It's all a go, everything is set up money-wise and system-wise, and we're now in the pledging period.
The guys are all pretty chill (yes there are probably maximum 15 of the 50 guys who would potentially fit into the douchebag frat stereotype after being around eachother enough), but everyone is in there for the right reasons. I feel it's different than other frats in that we won't be able to have a good time unless we make it happen, make business decisions, and make a good name for fraternities because there is no legacy of them here. I guess it's our chance to make a fraternity mean what we want it to.
There is no frat house either, so it's not like we're all going to be surrounded by eachother at all times and turning up the douche-meter.
However, I'm kinda still questioning how this will turn out. Will others look at us like we think we're better than them? Will I miss out on meeting legit people because they have something against typical frat guys? Will only the slutty girls be attracted to it and the ones with quality personalities be turned off by the frat image? Like FUCK I can't predict what's going to happen so I went with it. But if anyone has been through it or just has ideas for how it would work out that would be rad.

I do like the idea of being a founding father of a fraternity. Looks good on the resume and will make me feel like I've done something with my life.

I dont think much of frats or their members generally, but starting the university's first fraternity is a very cool thing imo. I say if it seems right to you then go for it~

Also are they unbanning frats or you are just starting up some unofficial totally non homo collective of young sexually active men who all live in very close proximity. And circle jerk~

Haha it's an official chapter of a parent fraternity, and they're funding it. The only thing the ban does is it means the university won't fund it. But the ban can be removed by a vote in a week, so that part might not even matter.

I was a founding father of a chapter of kappa sigma. It was a ton of work to get our charter and become an actual chapter rather than a colony, but in the end it was worth all of the work we put into it. Being able to call yourself a founding father is not something that many people get to do and I know a ton of guys who loved their fraternity experience but would have loved to be a founding father and to have their name on the charter and create the traditions of their chapters.
As far as girls go, we already have a greek system so we mainly hang out with the sororities. You'll get all sorts of girls of girls going after you though.
Being in a fraternity can be a very rewarding experience from the parties to the community service to raising money for charities, just remember to why you all joined and what goals you initially set and stick to those and you'll be good.

it would be pretty sick to be one of the starting members, and from what i have heard it sounds pretty sick. id say go for it, douchebaggy frat boy types arent really common at uvic anyways.

Delta Kappa Epsilon, the overarching fraternity. They collect money from other chapters and give it to us to start up. Then later we'll give some money to help out other groups wanting to start up a chapter.

agreed.

cool to start one, but not to join or be in one.

thank you but i don't need the approval of other people at my college, or the title of being in a frat.

You realize why frats aren't popular in Canada, right? With a drinking age of 19 (18 in some provinces) fraternities really only serve a purpose during your first year, by the time your second year rolls around everyone is legal and can therefor go out to a bar, club or whatever. While in the US, with a drinking age of 21 there is an almost need for an illegal watering hole. If you're doing this to gain friends, go for it, but no matter what, you're in a frat, the other dudes are probably douche-bags. Personally, if I was an employer in Canada and i saw that you started a frat, i'd probably just guess you are a giant douchebag, but go ahead do as you please, but UVIC was just looking out for you when they banned fraternities. Oh, and joing a frat will probably result in never maturing past the age of 19, you'll case 18-year old ass and any girl willing will more than suffice.

You should start one that doesn't have those queer Greek signs. Name it after a dinosaur or something awesome.

In the united states, fraternities flourished before the move to 21 in the 1980s...fraternities have declined in numbers in the years since. Especially at the north eastern liberal arts colleges, where 80%+ of guys would be affiliated...its down to 20%, or 0 at schools that have banned them

Hmmmmm. "Stegasaurawesome". That would be fucking cool. Unfortunately it's already been named according to Greek stuff in order to be an official chapter of the main fraternity.

And to the guy above, those are HUGE stereotypes and generalizations. I agree that those are probably somewhat accurate, but what's stopping this one from being legit? I mean I personally can have an impact on what this fraternity stands for. The whole drinking age thing though is a big deal... Like I will want to go to clubs and bars and pubs, so this better not get in the way of that.

be DKE, then disassocaite with national. half of the frats here are locals, and two of them dont even have greek names; they're Bones Gate and Panarchy

yo here has what i have been saying for years instead of having ur typical frat full of fucking douches and ur way of excepting people is threw who will take the hazing. . . have a baller party with ur bros and just invite every one and invite the people who are straight and fresh to join ur frat then u have real core frat with guys who are all ballers and u can escape the stereotype fuckhead frat guys

That's a possibility, but we need their $$$ at the moment. It seems like lots of the guys are stoked to be part of DKE anyways. By disassociate what does that entail?
And yeah fuck the hazing, I don't want to be a part of that. We know the guys are good guys anyways so I don't think there's any need to do make us do illegal and dangerous things. Like other chapters still have the ability to come out and make us do the stuff I think. So I dunno...

I am a chartering member of sigeps at WSU and let me tell you it is

sooo worth it. It really is cool to be apart of a fraternity that you

believe in. People just make generalizations cause they've had some

bad runins, but what they don't realize is that they do stupid shit

when they're drunk also.

Really try and recruit the highest quality men that you can, no matter

how much pressure the alumni puts on you to grow quickly. But as long as you recruit men who fit you and your fraternities ideals then those same values will be passed along to the younger members.

Try to change the way that fraternities are percieved...

(but take the opinions on NS with a grain of salt, most have never been to college or spent any real time in or around fraternities or they would realize that fraternities have cool guys and dbags just like any large group)

LOL. Generalizations and stereotypes exist for a reason. Because they are usually true.

Every guy I know who is in a frat is a douche. Without exception. Every single one.

If I were an employer and I saw your frat on your resume, I'd probably tell you to go out and do something with your life besides being an enormous leech on society and the school.

If you want your collegiate life to matter, do something important. Join legit organizations like papers, ski teams, professional organizations, and sports clubs.

Frats are for those with no motivation and no desire to mature meaningfully.

I work in an office where I see lots of GPA's, and I've never seen a frat member with a GPA above 3.0.

I could sit here and list off reasons for the next hour about why frats suck, but suffice to say they do. You're not gonna be any different than all the other douches out there.

Well, you might be, but the next group will be a little more douchy, as will the next group, and the next, and the next, until you're just like everybody else.

i was never into frats, but i have a couple friends who are. they like it, but seem different after pledging. its like theyre too good for me now, and they definitely bang slutty ass girls, like they treat them like a service (ie, yo, i fucked her and she was really fun, you should giver her a try sometime). idk, if you can avoid the typical frat boy douchebag frats can be really fun and a good thing.

stfu.

to OP

I'm in a frat and a lot fo my best buddies are in ones too, they arent gay at all and people like that have just had bad experiences or are being assholes just to be assholes, makng htem no better than the "asshole frat guys" (which I'm sure there are, not all are cool).

I hop eit goes really well for you, and I'm sure you will make many lifelong friends.

Thats pretty awesome all the power to ya. I'm actually one of the re founding fathers of Chi Psi at CU. I've heard its a lot of work but I'm pretty excited about bringing it back. This way we'll get to set the reputation and have a say over who is in the house. So i couldn't be more excited. Plus, 50 years from now I'll be able to come back and see my picture on the wall and say I was one of the re founding fathers. I personally wasn't sure about fraternities but when the opportunity to help start one from the ground up was presented it changed my view. This way we will be creating something rather than just being another frat guy.

that's sweet dude. and not all frats are gay. i hung out with one of the frats at montana state the other day and they were all pretty cool guys. most of them ski, don't wear upside down visors. i don't really think a frat is for me though.

Yeah I know what you mean. If it ends up like that I'm out and want no part of it. Luckily I don't think it will end up like that at all.

Thanks to all who have good stuff to say. To those saying it's gay and I'm just like them (or will be), you don't know me or the guys in the group. I don't think it will end up like that at all.

Mitch, I'm not actually one of the execs so I don't know why exactly this chapter. It's the only one and I think they looked at doing this one because we could continue even without the fraternity ban lifted.

ah. well along with what has been said already, it would be sick because hopefully you can make the frat douchebag free, and i mean really if it doesnt work out and you dont like it you can always leave.

Yo, Broseidon, lord of the Brocean, totally do it and date rape girls at your new bro frat bro, cause bro u know they totally want it bro cause thats what all frat bros do right bro? And bro, if you've got the first bro frat then you can totally score all the chicks that would be into frat bros......bro.

i know a few toronto dkes. their father was a dke as well. he's a pretty shady dude. some powerful people went through there.

that dke house also got busted by the cops for having a stockpile of cocaine and e tabs.

Bro I'm in it for being around my new paid-for bros. Bro style. I only want beer and whorish pieces of ass. But me and my elitist bros won't be able to without said roofies. Fuck school, I just want to live the bro life.
But yeah... Is this stereotype really so embedded in everyone though or is it just a funny joke?

this.

unless im at the party drinking all their shit then rampaging from party to party around campus. thats always a good time

Hahaha thanks for the support. BRO. Seriously is the image that bad? I'm a skier, and I regrettably gotta say I probably fit the trendfollowing skier/wannabe thug image closer than the "frat boy" image. Just because I'm probably going to be in this fraternity I'm automatically a douchebag?
And what year's your sis? Like 3 people posting in this thread go to UVIC, someone might know her. Unless you think me and my frat bros are going to find her and do the roofie thing...

'Twas a joke, sorry you took it the wrong way.
Truth be told, I thought frats have been badass since seeing the American Pie 4/5 haha.

^Fack. Sorry... I've been so deep in seriously thinking about this that I totally missed that joke.
