Starting my university's first fraternity

you might as well give up on your joke sister, she will probably find her way to kev since he is that big of a stud even without his bros and roofies

Start up an NS chapter.

haha that could be cool though, cause you could make frats however you wanted them to be. You dont have to follow any guidelines of other frats.

Ive never been in a frat but u should do it man if you got everything ready to go and really want to do it

yo man its just a frat you need to understand its not going to define you unless you allow it to do so. your the same guy, but now your in a frat its not a huge deal man. also your true problem is starting DKE cause if its anything like the one here its a bunch of weird ass kids. but other than that your fine man

Yeah man that's a good point.
And there aren't any other DKE people in this fraternity, so it's just the name and nothing more. Like it's just our crew but we're taking the name and they're supporting us.

And Master Frodo Baggins, I do go to UVIC and this fraternity is going to make the whole city so gay we'll be pissing rainbows. The flaming homosexuality might spread towards Vancouver too, you'd best watch out.

I feel like Newschoolers is the worst place to get advice on this... But you should do it; being in a house will define you and your college experience. And all of the people hating on Fraternities have probably never been a part of one or in one. And for that one kid saying Greeks aren't motivated and get shitty grades... Your school must be a fucking big outlier...

Nationally, 71% of all Greeks graduate, while only 50% of non-Greeks graduate.
The All Greek GPA is higher than the overall collegiate GPA
Since 1910, 85% of the Supreme Court Justices have been Greek.
85% of the Fortune 500 key executives are Greek.
Of the nation's 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by Greeks.
76% of Who's Who in America are Greek.
All but two Presidents since 1825 have been Greek.
70% of the U.S. Presidents' cabinet members since 1900 have been Greek.
76% of U.S. Senators are Greek.
Both women elected to the U.S. Supreme Court were sorority members.
Over 85% of the student leaders on 730 campuses are members of Greek-letter organizations.

Yeah it didn't take long for me to come to the same conclusion. But with the stupid shit there are a couple (like yours) well thought, well based responses that have definitely helped me out. Thanks man, and thanks to everyone who has been legit.

Yeah we have one here at PSU i believe.
I think frats get a bad name to them. Personally I am not a frat kind of guy but there are a ton of fraternities out there that are so sweet and in it for the right reasons.

Just remember that it takes a lot of work and it will not be easy... There are always a few houses that try to get started on campus here that fail because of lack of funding and pledges. Also remember to chose your brothers wisely and in the future your pledges because there are great fraternities out there and there are bad ones. Its YOUR house so you can decide who lives in it. What I feel happens to the bad houses is a group of "Bros" take it over and then bros choose bros to be pledges and it turns the house into a stereotype 'frat." You seem very realistic and level headed and you can make whatever you want out of this; a common term said in my house (Sigma Chi by the way) "you get out of the house what you put in" and its very true. I wish you luck with your house and I hope you succeed.

Oh wow. You can Google "positive fraternity statistics." Cool story bro.

There are standouts and motivated people everywhere.

These statistics do NOT exclude greek honor societies.

The statistics for social fraternities are pathetic.

I am a member of a so called "greek letter society."

There is a difference. Don't be fooled.

We'll probably all get regular sized houses together and have about 8 "fraternity" houses. That way if someone isn't down to party and wants quiet, people will party and hang out at a different one.

looks great on the resume. i wish i had some sort of high business position in a club or frat

Now let's factor in the quality of the people in the frats:

Oh, politicians and Corporate CEO's. great.

Meh personally I think Fraternities are just places for like minded people to live together, and for the most part they are good. Most people just like to see the bad. Good for you for being in a greek honors.

i joined one and was active for only a semester after i pledged. They seem to be a little different at my school than most places tho just because they havn't been big in the past. Honestly its a great time if your trying to get really fucked up alot and meet a shit ton of people. Im glad i did it even though im inactive just because i met alot of people that i would have never known. but like someone else was saying, as soon as i started going to the bars it really served no purpose.

the way i see it, its really just an excuse for 50 guys chip in and thrown huge parties all semester long

I started a frat at my school. It's pretty cool. A few nights a week most of us lift weight together. I can only bench 210 though. I need some more protein shakes. I'm the master of beer pong though. our frat is undefeated. On friday night we roofie the jungle juice and try to snag some of the youngs. I alwso like loud and obnoxious music. Drinking heavily, and making fun of other people.

i'd rather be a politician or a corporate ceo than one of you faggots who is hating on fraternities and probably doing nothing with your life.

I left. Yeah I bailed on it. I'm done with that shit. The intentions were good but it quickly started on its path to being like the stereotype. Like seriously. So creepy and greasy and pointless rituals. My friends were transforming into complete douchebags in front of my eyes.
Last party we threw I was ashamed to be associated with my crew. Fingerbanging on the dancefloor, guys grabbing girls to under tables to make out with them, blowjobs in driveways and front lawns (including the neighbour's), people fucking in the closets, bathrooms, and back yard. Every legit girl was creeped out, and all the slutty ones were stoked.
Not my cup of tea. I envy those of you whose fraternities are chill and rad.

thanks for the input big guy, maybe more than a one word answer next time though.
^sucks that it turned out that way, it would have been sick if it didnt turn into the stereotypical frat that most people dont like. i am going to say that its probably for the best though, the snow club crew of friends is way more legit anyways

Not gonna lie getting to know the crew a bit more definitely made me realize who I'd rather spend my time with. Rad people who shred > people who think that I'm way too obsessed with doing snowboard tricks on skis.

what a fratty story. slaying vag is definitely a successful night. obviously the "legit girls" were not legit if they were not DTF

As soon as you take any statistic course you will see how stupid this post is. Of course the greek society is going to have better marks than the non-greeks as you call them, for the simple reason there is less of them. There are significantly less people in the Greek societies than the rest of the campus this means that there will be more significant outliers in the set of data for non-greeks and this affects the average heavily.

Anyways i have nothing against frats i know a lot of cool people who are in them and i know douche bags who are in them as well. It is just my choice that i don't want to be in one of them.
