Showdown Thread!

I know there are only like 10 people on here who ski Showdown but I figured with opening day tomorrow a thread couldnt hurt. They will be opening tomorrow with all lifts running and most of the runs open with 100% natural snow. I am pretty sure they are the first in the state to open without snowmaking. They are only reporting a 10-15" base but I have been skiing up there since November 22nd and havent hit a rock yet. The entire mountain has a bomber base thanks to an early season dump and a week of warm weather plus lots of people have been hiking it and the cats have been packing where they can. With a foot of snow in the forecast Friday night Saturday and Sunday should be really good. If youre a park rat don't bother coming. I dont remember having terrain park features on opening weekend in a long time especially with a base so thin but you never know. Also some friends and I maintain a blog site that will have some pictorial updates of whats going down. www.sd406.blogspot.com and www.shodownmontana.com for the lowdowns

I skied Friday and Saturday and hit absolutely zero rocks. The park had 2 flat rails and a flat box in it but the mountain was amazing. We were hitting ankle to knee deep snow most of the day Friday then Saturday it was blizzarding and blowing snow in such a way that one turn would be ice and the next would be knee deep blower pow. The temperature on top was 20 below and with wind chill it was 55 below at times. They wont open tommorrow due to extreme cold but in the next 36 hours 20 inches of snow is expected so there will be some shralpages to be had.

how was the road up to slowdown on saturday kip? we were gonna roll up but worried we wouldnt make it in a ford focus.

I stayed in Neihart but I know the road from Great Falls to Belt was temporarily closed and the road from White Sulphur to Townsend was closed. When we drove home around 4 oclock it was pretty good though.

sick gnar pow on saturday.. cold as balls though.. i only took three runs total due to temperature and i had to get my girlfriend at my cabin at lunch.. then when i came back i didnt think it was worth it to gear up for one or two more runs....

hopefully showdown will get dumped on this week and then have good weather for this weekend.. we can have a second "opening weekend"!!! hahah cuz there was not nearly enough shananigans this last weekend..

They had about an hour long discussion on Friday about which was better between Toy Story and Toy Story 2 ahah

burrr to cold to go up saturday.. so derek drew and i are gunna search for some urban.. But we are going up Sunday for sure.. and Andy is going sunday as well... at least his bitch ass better be going up!

I don't know if I would put it in the category of The Shawshank Redemption.

However, your connection between Toy Story, with a protagonist named Woody, and your homophobic epithet at the end was quite funny.

the snow at showdown was worth the cold today, bluebird all day, stashes of blower pow all over, an epic day for sure. also, there is already a little booter up in the park, probably ten feetish, set up like that stepover fro 2 years ago but miniturized, earliest in the season i've ever seen a jump at showdown!!
on a side note, i lost a bright blue voluerz hat today, (fell outa my pants pocket i think) if anyone is up there tomorrow or the next day please keep an eye out for it. I've had if for like 3 years and i miss it already haha. will pay a small cash reward to the finder!!!!

we were up there today. super sick. every run is open. never saw a single rock. it seriously looks like feburary up there. the park is pretty lame but there is some fun naturals all over. and never saw your hat sam, sorry

I am in Nevada but I talked to my mom today on the phone and she said it snowed all day in Great Falls and there was about 3 or 4 inches of new snow so that means lots at Showdown. Definitely bring the fatties Ive been riding my fat skis every day this year and have yet to hit a rock. The whole mountain should be good but I would suggest staying out of Dynamite as it is probably rocky. Anywhere else should be good. If you ski Ruby, Speculation, or Muley just straightline the first 30 feet or so to avoid where all the gapers side slip into it and you most likely wont hit a rock. Wish I was there to shred but I will be walking up a small mountain in a desert tomorrow.

Showdown finally got up a decent jump actually. Its a feature that has 2 jumps that share the same landing. It seems that showdown finally got smart and figured out you could do that. The big jump still isn't that big but it is fun and it gets the job done. You can get some decent hang time off of it. The littler jump i have only hit a few times but it still throws you up a bit and is still pretty fun. The only down side of the jumps is that the landings are short, like usual.

So overall Showdown finally got up some decent jumps.

ZOMG!!! Last night i was told that Showdown is building another jump. And i guess there is just a massive pile of snow pushed for the landing and deck of the feature. Caveman was saying it looks like it might be a pretty big jump.

Showdown Big Air was this weekend. News anchors are stupid, not only do they lie about the number of competitors but they claim tricks that no one landed.... Other than that it was a super fun day sessioning with some cool kids. Here is the link to the video. http://www.kfbb.com/news/local/40938547.html?video=pop&t=a Oh, and I was the kid who was knocked out for 1:30. I came up a little short on my fakie 540...

so i've never skied at showdown before, and there is a slim chance i may this friday. my little step brother goes to school in melstone and his school is doing a field trip. i get 2 free tickets to all MT ski hills as i am an employee at big sky, so i may use one. i think it might be fun to go surprise him. but while i'm thinking about going... does showdown have much of a park? i watched that news report about the big air, (sorry to hear you got knocked out man) but it didn't look like that jump was very big or that there was anything else in the vicinity to session...
basically i'm asking if any of you guys are gonna be up there and wanna shred? or maybe if you can hit me up with some info as for whether or not making the trek from big sky to showdown for the day will be worth it. thanks guys...

Ya, that big air jump is huge compared to most of the jumps in the park. we do have some fun jibs though (down up down, battleship, rainbow box, up rail, big flat box, and last year we had a wall ride and barrel jib, plus we just got a c rail don know if its up yet) and we usually get a really fun hip at the end but thats it, no big jumps. We do have lots of fun runs on pow days and lots of off area if you can skin, and a little where just traverse. I don't know it would be fun, I would shred with you but on friday im headed to big mountain.

Like this is some of the stuff you can make real fast laps on (5 min lift ride)

oh and we tomorrow morning there will be =>12" of fresh

that's sick man, thanks for the tidbits, bummer you won't be there to shred with, but i'm sure ill have fun. i heard about the freshies, i'm stoked for ya... i'm currently sick as hell and missing a lot of ski days this spring break. anyway, thanks again, i think ill most likely make the trip up there.

i wont be up friday but if you are up there saturday or sunday for some reason instead of friday then i will for sure be up there.. ...

Today we set up a pretty fun right side c rail. Tomorrow Drew's barrel jib is supposed to get set up (3 55 gallon drums welded together) Currently the park is down up down to small/medium jump to rainbow box or flat flat rail to battleship to up rail or small tabletop to flat box to c rail and the barrel jib is supposed to close out the park.

Did you end up going?

On other Showdown news, were gearing up for a huge closing weekend party/ parking lot campout. 3 kegs of beer, games, tents, bbqs, etc on Saturday night.

well the barrel jib is still yet to be set up... but right now showdown has a pretty fun park. Sunday was super fun, 4" of new snow (west coast pow) and then it was warm and sunny and the snow didnt get sticky like it did on saturday. Jake brought his boom box up so that was a fun addition to the sessions.

unfortunately, no i did not. my boss wouldn't let me have the night off so i would have had to drive from showdown back to big sky by 4pm, didn't seem worth it to me. i still wanna get up there though, just had a sick pow day at big sky. relishing in these cuz there aren't many days left

the parking lot party is goin to be pretty damn ausome. all the money from the "crash fund" is gunna be used for it....which is close to 400$ right now.

hope to see everyone there :)

Whooop! Pow day at showdown today.
on a side note, a few of us were thinking about trying to set up an unofficial rail jam type thingy on closing saturday or sunday. like 5$ in a pot winner take all type deal? any interest in this? oh and boarders judging skiiers and skiers judging boarders to keep it somewhat fair.

Today was pretty damn good. SUper cold, not sure what the high was but at 5Am the temp was -10F it snowed pretty much all day. Not sure how much snow there was but it was deep enough that I was getting face shots skiing on some pretty fat rockered skis, that says something. They were getting pounded when we left today so tomorrow should be good again.

Today was the deepest day I have had all season, it was simply amazing and will only get better.
