Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the only thing not shut down in DC. This picture is incredible.

Austria has one as well. Dont be so ignorant to think that the tomb of the unknown soldier is strictly american.

No nonono, I'm actually from the UK, but I live in Austria. Maybe that makes it even worse for you (lol), but I just don't see why this makes YOU proud, it's not you who is standing there, and don't want to be offensive but I actually think this started after World War I in Britain... maybe I'm wrong.

Do you see what I'm trying to say?

I think you missed his point.

The pride isn't coming from the fact that there's a tomb, but rather from that it's still being guarded, like any other day, while everything else is shut down.

Classic non-american immediately jumping to the "ignorant american" card even though it's completely out of context.

There is no ignorance about this kids post he is showing some pride. Shut the fuck up.

Thank you. And please lets not make this a hate on America thread...

These guards had the option to leave and chose not to..

This. I saw he wasn't from the US so I thought I'd help him learn something new if he didn't already know.

Now everyone can relax. This is a thread with no reason for argument.

This can now be the official thread for posting patriotic pictures and country pride. but lets at least keep it respectful.

was gonna hope we could stay away from this. we all like to me the "merica FUCK YEAH" people once in a while. but i'm talking about more moving photographs like the ones that have been posted

i live 20 miles north of arlington cemetery and it's pouring cats and dogs. it's a cold rain and the wind is piercing. my heart is with those guys as they stand for what they believe in

i actually think that would be a blast. spent all summer at a job working outside in all sorts of weather. it sucks at first but eventually you get wet/dirty/cold enough that you just stop giving a shit about it and about being uncomfortable and it just becomes fun.

but still, respect, of course.

The sentinels who guard the tomb are absolute bosses. Mad respect. snow, rain, hail. They stand strong. Here is some more info on them

It is considered one of the highest honors to serve as a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Fewer than 20 percent of all volunteers are accepted for training and of those only a fraction pass training to become full-fledged Tomb Guards. This attrition rate has made the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Guard Identification Badge the second least-awarded decoration of the United States Military (the first being the Army Astronaut Badge).[19]

The soldier "walking the mat" does not wear rank insignia, so as not to outrank the Unknowns, whatever their ranks may have been. Non-commissioned officers (usually the Relief Commander and Assistant Relief Commanders), do wear insignia of their rank when changing the guard only. They have a separate uniform (without rank) that is worn when they actually guard the Unknowns or are "Posted".

The duties of the sentinels are not purely ceremonial. The sentinels will confront people who cross the barriers at the tomb, or are disrespectful or loud

i watched the changing of the guard once. One of the most fascinating and patriotic things I have ever seen.

I'd love to see patriotic pics from other nations in here too. Maybe a "National Pride" thread? Everyone could post stuff they love about their country and we could keep it respectful.

I have seen it a few times over my life because of school trips/family. The weight of it hit me this past year randomly when I saw a picture of it and now this. I originally was bored by it when i was younger as I didn't understand what it represented, but now it inspires me. (not sure if inspires is the best word, but i am extremely brain dead from all my homework)

thank you for posting this twice. still an extremely powerful picture. and this was not my fault, they falsely stated that it was from today

Dont care. Still an awesome picture and its awesome that they are not leaving their post today during the hurricane.

Fuck wars, and fuck national pride. We are a species and we would be living in a damnshit better place if we stopped being proud of our differences. When are you going to realise what we could do if we forgot this nonsense bullshit?

world peace is unattainable. There are too many religions with too great of differences to ever have a "kumbaya" type world. That is extremely cynical of me to say but in my opinion its the way it is. AND for that reason national pride is a must.

Being proud of your nationality is like being proud of your genetics, shouldnt be proud for something you have no control over.

That's a pretty good argument but I don't agree that world peace isn't possible. You say there are too many religions.

When people realise that believing in some religion, or mighty-one, is nothing to be respected, and just shows ignorance and the opposite of open-mindedness, religions might start to become unimportant, and we may take a step towards a category 1 civilisation.

If you look at the last few hundred years, people have started waking up and actually becoming aware of the way we have previously been misinformed by apparent superiors. True, there are still people who don't think evolution is real, and that the world was made 7000 years ago. In general, though, I actually think the situation is getting better, and if we don't get destroyed by weapons soon, maybe we will make it through.
