then i should be more amazed that they volunteered to go to those places then i should be by them standing guard. so by this logic, them standing guard isn't such a big deal when this thread should be about the people on patrol in afghanistan right now. i'm sure if you asked these fellows if they would rather stand on guard in torrential rain, or risk stepping on a pressure plate in afghanistan, they'd probably pick standing guard. so why again should i care about these guys standing guard in the rain and wind?

Its not mainly Marines. It's equal parts all four branches, and is ran by the Army's 3rd IR (aka Old Guard). And it is mainly enlisted personnel, but no rank is worn at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
As a Marine, I remember volunteering for this duty about 6 times in 8 years, but never made it past the application process. These men (and now women I believe) take this duty very seriously, and regardless of whether or not this photo was taken in September or not, 21 steps were taken at all sentry changes, on any day, regardless of conditions.

Standing guard over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a mark of the respect that we have for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. It is the same reason that many of us do not view Memorial day and NOV 11th as holidays, or simply a day off from school or work, like many these days do.
My guess is that many of the things that we do, would not seem like 'such a big deal' to you, but are to us.

It is, and always has been the U.S Army that guards the tomb. To guard it, you must be a member of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment and ace the training.
Not knocking the Marines by any means, but they do not do everything in the military.

I am proud of all of the first responders who were out working to rescue people in the midst of the "frankenstorm."
