Ok, so there's some problems with the site... how do we change it?

how about we judge people based on their posts instead of there post count or member numbers?
 
i think that is a good idea. but i dont think it would work. see it is the collection of different ppl as a whole that make NS such an interesting place. if you segregate it you ruin the community. thats my 2 cents.

just let it ride out, its ought to change eventually. All I care is hopefully ns will still be around in 20 years from now or even more.
 
NS used to be a site of skiers coming together online to talk about SKIING!!! The non-ski gabber forum is for people not talking about skiing. Then some attitude came around that you had to have a lot of posts and be an asshole to be a cool gal or dude. After this happened, many people just left it because it started to get on their nerves. I hope that if people actually figured out that it's ok to criticize skiers and have an argument. People that act stupid and/or act like posers and swear/diss people ruin the whole skiing culture. It's not like everyone's gonna be a peace activist now, but come on. I see a lot of threads dissing people and that's just not right. Try and think about what you say before you say it. having 1,000,000,000 posts doesn't mean you're a good skier. It just means you spend A LOT of time on NS. I hope you all actually take my advice, unlike the posers/assholes I talked about earlier.
 
Here's my opinion: Charging would only make people leave. Nobody likes to have to pay money. And NS isn't for BS. keep it free of that. Charging would improve the site's features, but it would kill the people's wallets who love NS.

Videos, forums, pictures, the whole sense of community, meeting up with people, a general voice in the ski industry.

Keep that underdog attitude. Don't get all jacked up on ourselves. Skiing and talking about skiing should be about having fun and shredding with some friends.

Give people a "legitimacy rating" where there text is filtered for words like: fag, gay, newb, fuck.

From that give them a rating of like: shaolin or gooch or something so people know that the flamers are just flamers and dont have to filter through their shit to get a good opinion.

Get some more girls, man, this is a sausage FEST!

Get the idea out there that its cool to help people. It should be about the general level of the sport progressing, not the individual. If you're having troubles learing a trick you need to catch up, and if you get asked, lend a hand.

I just think that this site needs to get back to the grassroots skiing level. No more hating on styles (because everyone hates their own, why can they hate someone elses?) No more hating on clothes, unless they are REALLY asking for it.

i wish i had time to read all of the posts in this thread, but from what i have seen so far this is turning out well. it seems like the majority of people are willing to attempt to make a change.

i love newschoolers. no matter how much shit talking goes on, and how much hate there is, i can't see myself leaving. it's just too damn addicting, and i love skiing too damn much. this is my escape from reality.

the karma system would work extremely well. it's obvious that people care about their image, because they spam the shit out of the forums to up post counts. a karma system would encourage people to make more intelligent less hateful posts to up their image. i'm sure you know this already, doug.

for the most part, i don't think the site will change too much. the kids will keep shit talking, and the assholes will keep prevailing. i would hate to recommend mass deleting of bullshit on the mods part, because they don't deserve to have to do that much work. all in all, the change needs to occur within the people.

i like your post doug. i hope whatever you guys decide to do works out well. i'm behind you guys 100%, and i'm positive things will get better. maybe not back to the "good 'ol days", but most definitely better.
 
haha, this thread itself has turned into a hefty pile...how are you suppose to sift through 4 pages of 3 kids trying to "be all they can be" by posting as many different times as they possibly can, THAT IS WHAT I HATE ABOUT THIS SITE NOW!

And why all this talk of change just because 2 pros, Spriggs and Wester leave...What about the ones who have stuck it out through this BS...now don't get me wrong, I know Spriggs and Wester is a bomb skier, but this has been an issue since I've come back to the site, which has been at least 4-5 months now. I too am having double knee surgery in early March, so I will be gone from the site again for a good bit...I hope that by some chance things are somewhat better when I get to return in a few months.

1. The search bar is way too underpowered. Everytime people say "search bar" I cringe, because frequently when I know exactly what I'm looking for, I still can't find it. I can't pick what forums to search, I can't do full text against comments, etc, etc.

2. The name. I couldn't take anyone seriously who called themself a "newschooler". I get that it comes from "new school skiing". I don't expect this to change.

3. Threads that should be deleted. 90% of the garbage on here can, and should be deleted. I don't care about people with low or 0 post counts posting, but so many things end up on the front page wasting space that could just be wiped with no bad effects.

1. Make searching useful.

2. Delete crap.

3. There have been so many moderation suggestions. Just pick one, I don't care if it's complicated moderation, or 5 people deleting things. Anything would be better than nothing, so long as it happens more than it does now.

I bet 99% of the people making "First Post" comments don't even know where that originated. The site that first had that problem was also one of the first to add big time moderation, and it helped make a site with a much larger audience than NS readable. It can work here.

The retarted shit people post in non-ski gabber that makes you wonder how they make it from sunrise to sundown.

Develop the site more. Needs a better layout (drop down menus are so useless - you still have to click Forums, then go to a separate page before you get to ski gabber. The whole point of drop down menus is to eliminate that, you guys missed it).

Don't. Useless crap such as flame threads from aliases needs to go. But shit talking? This is the internet, that's what it's for. If you don't like it, go elsewhere. Read any other internet forum, it happens.

If you ask me, people that make "I'm leaving posts" are full of themselves - why are they so special that everyone should read a post about their departure and post a fucking eulogy. I don't care if you're Jon Olsson - just leave. A community that never had any negativity would be boring, and everyone knows it.

The sooner people up top realize that these growing pains have happened to every other community like this on the internet, and take the same steps as those sites to get past it, the better.

I hate hearing "noob", or all these suggestions about probationary periods, etc. Everyone here was new at one point, so you're all hipocrits. How long you've been a registered member on a website really doesn't make you cooler than anyone else.

Second of all, I hope that all the kids on here saying things like noob, making "first post" comments, and other shit like that are doing things that were all started by nerds and video game tools on the internet. It's not really something you'd want to copy.

I think the hate is part of NS, in some cults (Black Watch, 420 Forum) there is no hate at all, maybe like a special forum for people with high karma (if the karma system gets implemented). I don't notice a whole lot of shittalking or hate and I'm in the forums alot so maybe just don't pay attention to hate? Appoint forum "cleaners" that would be like mods but could only delete threads and posts

Another idea that i think would stop the hate in the forums, would to have more sections in forum ie. Ski gabber, non skigabber etc. I think if you but sections for mogul skiers, newcomers it would help.
 
I was simply trying to share my opinion on the sport. I consider there to be a difference between talking shit, and telling it how it is. You know that I don't just talk random shit, I just state my opinion on the sport. I can back it up to.

Really, did anyone find the sw10 fest interesting? If I don't say something about it, our sport will turn into aerials.

Here are my solutions.They may be contreversial but they are suggestions.

1.Install a 3 strikes and your banned for life rule for extreme subjects. For example"NS sucks balls",people that write that should be banned to prevent hate and disgust for the mods and techs of NS.Aliases and regualars must follow the regulations or else there will be consequenses. Maybe there will be a problem because of diffrent ip adresses but I think your smart enough to figure out a solution.(I know nothing about internet theory!)

2.Clean up the members!We are close to 80,000 members which 60,000

don't log in anymore.My solution is to send a widespread message through PMs and leave a delay of about 6 months to respond/read or whatever.

3.I hate to say it,but we should also ban politics on NS. Must of us can't hadle the subject.

4.Repetitive or excess post makers (post whores) should lose all their post count.

I love the news section, the videos, pictures and the forums section of the site.

Like I was explaining in question 2, rules should be followed by all and mods should be craking down without regret.

I have to suggest sending a PM on the first loggin of a new member explaining how everything works:forum rules, posting rules, how to use a search bar ect...this could reduce the uncessesairry(sp?) newbie post.

It's not just that, perhaps it was just time to adress the issue. We've been hearing it for so long, and at some point one has to make a stand and try to fix problems.

Simply bitching about it never changes anything... someone who only bitches is part of the problem, not the solution.

You get through this much information by reading it all and caring what it says.

I have read every single post in this forum, and will save it for future reference.

I love NS soooo Much... it is my life(Cuase im injured) but it was my life before too. Nothing should change people should grow up and realize that the internet is and will always be a silly place... so enjoy it
 
What are you saying, that I bitch all the time and don't do anything about it? If you're saying I bitch all the time, then you must be mistaken me for another person. To change things, I would have to be in your position. Now, on that note, with 8 years of programming/web design/video editing/and hardware experience, if you would like me to sign on and give you a hand, I am available and would be more than willing.

As far as reading through all the posts and saving them. You are better than I. I used to read everything and I still do read most, but lately it has been impossible to enjoy the forums without 4 hours of free time.

I say you ban IP's. It's the only way you will see any change. Once you kick one person out, all the other kiddies will cower. If they don't, CYA!

I couldn't disagree more. I've met way more positive people at different ski hills/events than on ns.com. The negative attitude on here is a result of kids hiding behind a user name or being insecure about their ownself or skiing.

On the hill, it's put up or shut up. If you ski like shit or ski great and have a negative attitude i don't want to ski with or even hang out with you.

Skiing is suppose to be fun. I think somewhere along the line, alot of kids on this site forgot that "newschool" "freestyle" skiing is what they love to do. It's easy to say but pretty hard to realize unless you're out on the hill.

Not that I don't want the NS staffers to not have job, but I think if people spent less time on this site and more time skiing, it would translate into a better community because everyone would have skiing experiences to discuss as oppose to negative comments towards people that are out there everyday.

A total change in attitude towards the moderation.

And maybe a couple of new mods suited for effecting that change. I haven't seen Jay or Court on here in forever and it seems like Jibremix and Melvs are carrying the team. And I know you're a big softy Doug, but this isn't the first time I've advised you to throw an elbow; sometimes someone just needs to be a ruthless asshole to let kids know what's up. This place is like a Hobbesian case study. The state of nature in Leviathan, exhibit A: Newschoolers.com. Make people FEAR reprisal for hurting the site the way they are, stop letting people walk all over you, and the uppity cesspool that forms the bulk of this site's membership will thin out and stop polluting the place.

What do I mean by that... well, for starters, don't justify your decisions to delete posts. "Because your post was retarded" is a good enough reason to delete it. If someone has a problem with freedom of expression, tell them to post somewhere else. In fact, just tell them to go fuck themselves. They aren't paying for the privilege to post here, they have no rights. If mods want to delete a thread because they don't like it, they can. If you want to ban a member because you don't like them, you can. Give the mods ban privileges, or at least temp ban privileges (48 hours or something). There are so many people here who could best contribute to the betterment of the site by LEAVING it. You know it's true.

The quality of this forum has always been determined by the members who make it up. Bad members make the good ones worse because everyone gets bitter and cynical about all the idiots roaming around. Clean out the trash, Doug, and stop apologizing for everything you guys choose to do with YOUR WEBSITE.

maybe this is an idea in response to the post count difference... if you log on and post at least one comment you get one point

example...

If pooponastick logs on on may 6th 2006 and posts 88 times he still only gets one point that goes to his count

so no matter ho many time someone posts they only get one point

I like the probation period of a couple days for new members. Just so they get a feel of the site before they post and he ripped apart and leave because of it.

as for mods, i semi agree with JD. I miss the other days where 221, freezy, bitchassspltz and them ripped you to pieces if you made a shit post. It made me think twice about a dumb post because someone would rip it hard. Made me thing before posting.

More mods could be good ;)

I think people in general just need to chill out more.

but yeah on the whole post count thing.. i have been on ns for over 3 years, for usually an hour every single day, yet i only have 300 or so posts, this is because i dont post unless i think i can contribute, i say putting the member number or join date along with the avatar and post count would be really cool.
 
On the hill, dicks get ignored or punched out. It should be the same as NS.

I propose a karma system or "dick-o-meter" where people can rate posts. The higher the dickery of the post, the lighter the text gets so it fades into the background.

First person who sees a bad post can click a link that effectively says "you are a dick", and members who see the post after will notice it is faded and possibly not worth their time. If they read the post anyway, they can disagree and click a link that lowers the rating on the dick-o-meter.

As the dickery of a post rises on the dick-o-meter, the post fades more and more. And maybe eventually gets deleted from the thread if enough people hate it.

This should be done per-post, because occasionally a dick makes a good post. Your also likely to run into abuse with NS cr3wz teaming up on a member they all hate and making him a super-dick when he may on be a bit of dick.

I need to think about this more.

A karma system only works if the vast majority of the site aren't retards. I'm not so sure I'm willing to say that about NS right now. Maybe if a karma system had been introduced a long time ago, it would have been an ounce of prevention, but we're too far along now and it just cannot be the pound of cure that's needed.

It's interesting to hear ideas about it though... I just haven't heard one that would work.

nesurf did this, they had a bunch of moderated forums, where anything involving serious bashing/verbal assault would be deleted...but they also had a separate forum where there is no moderation, and heckling is even encouraged for those of us who actually enjoy thrashing other people for no reason.

i think the best viable option would be for NS to create two sets of forums, moderated and unmoderated... the moderated forums would obviously be a safehaven for those people looking for advice, general info, or looking to shoot the shit without being attacked

then, have a second forum unmoderated and everyone who wants to just blast other people can do that... obviously if things get out of hand you could always delete a thread here or there.

i dunno if you guys would be up for that, but it worked for a while on nesurf til the moderators just got tired of having punk ass kids on the site at all, but where as this website is a majority punk kid demographic, attempting to eclipse them would probably be against your best interests.

I think destroying members who violate their priveldges should be swift and methodical. It will set a precedent and in no time people will be understand that if you fuck around, you're ass is toast.

Personally, I don't give a flying fuck if some 13 year old kid doesn't get to come on NS. If he/she can't control himself/herself then they don't deserve to breath the same e-air as us.

i think the best thing would be a revamped search bar because it just searches thread names so its hard to find old threads
