Official mountain biking thread

My dropper post squishes down a good bit when I sit on it, tried bleeding it which didn't help at all. Thinking I need to rebuild it. It's an external reverb post, anyone rebuild one of these before? Is it worth it or should I just buy a new one. Don't mountain bike too much so I've just been dealing with it, but it's getting annoying.

Hell of a race today so stoked to see Finn on top. And that he now has the slightest of slight chance to take the overall with amaury’s crash makes world champs a bit more interesting

The cost of rebuilding it is enough to just say fuck it and sell it for cheap to buy a new post

Meh, shaking hands with Steve Peat was better.

A lot of my friends growing up raced in 2 of the CO motocross series. They would win SRAC and RMXA quite frequently but I remember one local race east of Colorado Springs at Wildrat that the tomacs were there when Eli was 17 or so and he lapped every single rider in the local pro class. That whole family is next level.

Also crazy to see the local kids who even were getting free bikes and parts from their sponsors were not even close to getting to that top level.

My rear shock compresses and rebounds perfectly fine but if I lock it out, it will compress then rebound VERYYYY slowly. This is my first year biking so don't know shit about bikes. Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be happening?

I’m sure someone will chime in but assuming you live in Summit by your username, feel free to bring it by Slope Style and have our mechanic, James take a look, he’ll get ya figured out for sure and we’d love to help out an NSer!

Will absolutely do that. Thank you!

is the rebound knob (usually red) under the lock out lever

Only took two months but Maxxis warranty came through! Nice to know that when you buy a $100 tire with a factory defect they'll eventually have your back.

LOL that's on you for spending $100 on a fucking tire. I love it when people overspend on gear thinking it matters.

WTB did that for me, too

It just hit me - does my shock not have a lockout and is that red knob just doing what it's supposed to do? I'm reading about how rear shocks work and now I'm beyond confused. I could have sworn when I turned it all the way, it wouldn't compress.. but now when I turn it all the way it compresses then rebounds VERY slowly while in the other direction it compresses then rebounds fast.

Sorry - I'm very new to this.

Yep! Here's the setup guide for your shock: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CL64wZ5LKwFJxKBTwjiiFD0QWT28g1dh/view You have rebound, but no compression adjustment or lockout.

Like Cy said. You got it right. That little "R" on your shock logo stands for rebound... which is that red knob. There is no lockout on your shock

Awesome - thanks to both of you. That's good to hear as I haven't been riding it thinking it was broken. Appreciate your time.

How can I identify what size dropper post will fit my frame?

**This post was edited on Aug 16th 2022 at 6:32:19pm

You're looking for a 31.6 mm diameter dropper. That's probably the most common size on the market, so you're in luck. Assuming you're on a Large or Medium frame, I'd highly recommend the OneUp in a 180 mm length. You can then shim it down if you need to. A PNW components dropper is also a good value, but you can't fit quite as long of one into some frames. To be totally safe, a 150 mm dropper might be a better bet.

Awesome - thanks again for your help. I was unsure due to the weird tube angle that only goes so far down. I'm going to look at those recommendations right now.

Appreciate it.

Most brands mention a maximum insertion depth if you look at the specs. I don't see that on the Vitus site. Your bike comes stock with a Brand X 150mm dropper, which has a longer insertion depth compared to OneUp. So you could probably get away with the 180mm One Up (especially if you shim it down). You should use the handy calculator that OneUp has on their website to make sure it agrees (or email them), to make sure.

Anybody had a crack in their carbon frame fixed? Ibis offered me a crash replacement for $600. Just asked Broken Carbon for a quote fixing it out of Boulder and Grand Junction.View attachment 1046907

Update: Went for the crash replacement option. Just spent the entire afternoon applying 3M Scotchgard Pro protective tape on it. Fuck that process is slow, but worth it. Excited to have my trail bike back!
