Official mountain biking thread

I’ll be at Stevens on August 6th who wants to shred?

miss me with the colorful Vail comments I could care less when it comes to the MTB scene, the local management has been crankin’ to get this going. I’m stoked

Friend is tryin to stop me from buying a 2017 or older bike sayin they’re gonna be heavily used and noisy what do you think? A good choice of bikes in the low $2k range to chose from at that price. Want 27.5s with probably 160 in front and 150 in back. Looking at mostly Remedy 9.8, Bronson, maybe Nomad, maybe Release 5C.

Yeah, carbon repair is legit, but it's expensive. You probably wouldn't end up that far below the $600 number to get it fixed, and as someone mentioned, it will affect resale. Crash replacement seems like the move here for sure.

Yep. I was leaning towards this route from the beginning anyway. Not looking forward to forking out that much money unexpectedly, but I took the bike in to my local ibis dealer to send the front triangle back for the crash replacement.

Just depends dude, I’ve seen used bikes from 2019-2020 that are clapped. Just go take a look at whatever you find and you’ll probably be able to tell by the seller if it’s gonna be a problem child of a bike or not

I’ve found like half a dozen new Nomads in my size around here. Only mid C S line available which most ppl don’t want cuz of probably the Fox shocks, Reverb seatpost, and extra cost, but theyre marked down 20% now to the base C R price. Debating if I just buy one now to get a few days left in season, or just watch inventory and maybe even wait until Sept/Oct/November to see how cheap they get. Santa Cruz ever go like 30-40% off or am I being greedy at 20% off?

20% off a Santa Cruz was a shockingly good deal in the good old days when the supply chain hadn't screwed everything up. I'd be pretty shocked to see them go any lower. If you want one, and they have it in your size/build, and it's 20% off, I don't think you'll find a better deal later.

20% off a Nomad is a solid deal, period; even more so in the current market. Makes sense because 27.5 is losing mainstream appeal to 29ers.

Nomads (and SC overall) are solid bikes, and SC is a solid company; their reserve wheel program looks sweet; would buy if I had the coin. Known many people to enjoy Megatowers, V10s, Nomads, etc.

Obviously $ is king, but buy your bike from the shop that has the best reputation/support/people/location/engagement/vibe, because those are the guys you're going to be interacting with for the duration of the time you own the bike, which is worth the couple % off you might be able to finesse from a different shop up front.

If you go in and talk to the shop people, get to know them, talk about bikes and the bike, etc, let them know you're on the fence and they might seal the deal for you with some smaller discounts on pedals/gear/merch/whatever that could effectively bring the cost of the bike down in total.

Just remember: tip bike shops in beer (local craft stuff is usually a hit)

LOL yeah, if you're a dumb fuck who buys blindly into trends they're becoming less popular.

Preaching to the choir here, bud. I ride a Clash, can swap it between full 27.5 and 29/27 mullet whenever I want to.

But go to a bike park or trail system and look around. Not very many fresh 27's, but there's a whole lot of wagon wheels. That's just objective, observable reality.

The further the industry goes in producing more 29er designs and fewer 27's, the more pronounced the change is going to be. And with XC, Enduro, and DH racers almost universally using them, it's hard to see any reversal of that trend happening in the near future.

Fingers crossed freeride carries the torch so I can get 27.5 wheels and parts for my bike down the road.

Thanks guys, you sealed the deal well. Obviously I’m gonna ride a few different bikes in the shop while in, but everything else has pretty much pointed me to Nomad. I have kids so unfortunately don’t have time to go to all different dealers that have them, but will pick one hopefully close enough nearby that I’d be likely to use for service as well. Boulder has cheapest price but you know that’s to make up for whatever crazy municipal taxes they charge extra.

i just need a salesman to close the deal. Maybe show me how easy it can be to load in the back of my car (i’ll die from impaling myself on my skis or bike in an accident before ever putting any sort of rack on my car). Is there any special thru axle i’d need to buy if bike is not equipped (sure it is)? I imagine it also comes with tubeless tires, anything else I should be looking to get?

I would also check out the Bronson in depth before you pull the trigger.

Nomad is geared toward bikepark riders who also grind out the pedal up to their descents, and hit lots of big jumps and features

Bronson is more of a do-everything bike that can handle park and serious DH riding, but also is a bit friendlier toward easier riding, climbing, and trucking over bigger rocks. When going full send off big features, you'll find the limits of the 150mm Bronson sooner than the 170mm Nomad, however.

Honestly Santa Cruz' website does a great job of describing the applications of the respective bikes.

Not sure what type of riding you plan on doing, from my experience:

- 27 is perfect for jumps, home-built trails, and tight flow, but isn't quite as good at chunky stuff. prioritizes fun over speed/capability. If you're not aiming to rocket thru double black tech, 27 will be plenty of bike.

- mullet has been nicer for trucking over chunky stuff, speed, and takes a little sting out of rocky climbs, but isn't as playful. bit less emphasis on low-speed fun, but can deal with bad lines, holding speed, and bigger obstacles a bit easier.

Keep in mind, I rode both settings back-to-back so I definitely noticed a difference, but it's far less of a change than you'd imagine, especially if this is your first legit bike. Can't go wrong with either option, you'll love any SC bike, regardless of wheelsize.

I’d take a Bronson, however I wouldn’t want the mullet, 27s around. Maybe that’s something I could get a shop to work with me on. Friend at bike shop was saying I’d want 170s (not that were good, fat maybe? Ha), but I’d definitely consider Bronson too. Plenty of options as it comes into sale season, i just need to pick one

Dear Mother Nature,

Dedicated diggers deserve durable dirt.

Leverich lovers leave loose lines.

WD-40 is a solvent. Good for freeing up rusty shit, terrible as a lubricant. If you put that shit on your bike, and bring it to a shop, all the techs are gonna shit talk ya behind your back.

Did it! Got the Nomad. The Remedy 9.8 went on sale was even a fee hundred cheaper than Nomad, but preferred the SC company over Trek, and just something better about the geometry for me.

Got some pleasant trail karma this weekend.

After a couple hours of raking and some futile attempts to pack moon dust on one of the newly re-routed berms on Leverich I made my way down and was shooting the shit at the trailhead and having a snack, as I picked up my pack off the ground I realized that my bear spray was missing from the side pocket. I had just bought a nice new holster, but in my haste to get out of the house quickly in the morning instead of securely mounting it to my pack I stupidly stuffed it in the side water bottle pocket. As soon as I realized it was missing someone came through the end of the trail and was holding my bear spray and asked if I was looking for it. Pretty stoked.

And as some old lady carefully rolled through the section I was working on she said "thank you for your service" like I was a veteran or something, got a good chuckle out of that.

Also a friendly reminder if you live/ride in bear country keep your spray on your person, and just because you are riding a popular trail doesn't mean you should forgo bringing bear spray. Someone told me a story of when they were having a snack on a ridgeline with their bike about 50 feet below, and a big ol' griz walked past and stopped between them and their bike. It looked at them and then they realized that his spray was attached to his bike. Luckily the bear just kept on walking, but that sure would have sucked for him to have needed to discharge his bear spray with it not on his person. This was a kinda old and eccentric guy who told me this story so I dunno how true it is, but I always think it's a bit silly when I see people with their canister attached to their bike or in a pocket that isn't immediately accessible.

Gonna be riding at alyeska bike park in about a week, i need some tips/trail suggestions for when I’m there

I live in pa so I dont have much of an idea of what I’m getting into lol

LOL yeah man, a whole 200ft. of new trail, including a shitty little "whoop" section all the riders are making fun of. Oh were those water ruts that were never fixed intentional? Hahahaha God damn gapers have no clue what they're doing.

Looking to be a slopfest at Shoe for the cup this year. Probably bailing on my plans to trip down, none of my buddies will commit to splitting a place to stay and I'm not exactly stoked on driving 7 hours to stand there in the rain and mud, especially with no accommodations planned.

Fortunately coming back to WV in a week or two for fall semester, trying to ride Greasy Street 30 laps a day every weekend the park is open. Always down for party laps if anyone's gonna be there.

just bought a spitfire for 800$ less than what I simultaneously sold my old enduro for, absolute beast of trade for meas I didnt need/want that much bike for college and essentially got paid to move to a bike wherd I have more fun on and less stress about pampering it

Thanks for the validation that you don't need $1000 worth of bikepacking specfic framebags, tents, camping gear, and a titanium bong in order to ride your bike to sleep outside.

The funny thing is that when I started bikepacking five years ago I had way more specialized gear, but now, with more experience I've pared it down to a dry bag, a bunch of voile straps, a frame bag I made, and a $30 rack off amazon hahah. Just put whatever camping stuff you have on whatever bike you have and go sleep in the woods!

I just got a couple of old sewing machines for free and I'm hoping to make some custom bags for a few of my bikes. And I've got a few old camera bags I don't use anymore that would make for great rack bags too with some simple modifications.

I've got some great overnighter options near me, and they would be quick enough for a weeknight even if I rode from home I think.

Definitely some value to be had in a beefy metal frame that can handle dings and scratches. Plus the raw finish on the banshees is downright gorgeous.

Super interested to hear your thoughts after you get some riding in on the Spitfire. Have def thought about going to a shorter travel jib/trail bike for local riding and picking up that prototype Supreme in the future for serious park duty.

That's the same one I rode. Maybe 2018. I rode it in the bike park here at Snowmass. It was definitely under gunned for a bike park, but super fun and playful, and jumped really well.
