Weren't you on a fully rigid Niner before? That's going to be quite the drastic change. That's a hot bike though.

Yeah. That RDO frame was unforgiving as hell, and despite the blazing climbing, I like having power and fluidity through the rough/bumpy sections (that's where I'm slowest), and hopefully the Brain will help my climbing with full suspension.

Nice ride. Which year/model Epic is that?

Thanks! It's a 2013 Expert Evo. It's still tubed up and I'd like to get a carbon seatpost, but as of now it's about 24 lbs. Not too bad!

That would be sick! When you make your documentary, you should only use footage of you riding the trail and not use any voiceovers/interviews, and then add music. I would watch that documentary

I'll keep that in mind! Cool idea, let the footage explain itself.

Alright guys, after 5 years of Utah I think I'm finally gonna buy a mountainbike. I need your guys help in what bikes to look at, whether to buy new/used, etc.

The extent of what I know going into this:

5'9"

170lbs

Thinking I'll be doing mostly "All-mountain/XCountry" trail riding from what I can tell.

I will likely want to spend ~$1200 total for my full setup.

I have friends that work in bike shops that could go with me and look at used bikes to make sure they aren't too fucked up.

Any recommendations on what style/size of bike or some specific bikes to look into? Thanks in advance for any insights you could provide!

Stoked to get into this as I have stopped longboarding a couple years ago and need a new "extreme" hobby to get into for the summer.

Specialized Stumpjumper FSR

Yeti SB66

just remember if you are going with a 26" wheel bike, that it will be hard to find parts a few years from now.

I don't take advice from rapists ;).

No, but seriously, so I should go with a 29 then? I literally have next to zero mountainbiking knowledge.

Thanks for the info.

Used, size M, probably between 80/90-120/140mm suspension, whether you go fully or hardtail pretty much depends on the trails you will be riding and personal preference when it comes to that category of riding, however you will get better components for 1200 in a hardtail, but you can get lucky with a bargain in fully's sometimes.

Look for a 29'er or a 27.5(650b) wheelsizes if you are mainly foing for trail/XC personally I am not a fan of how 29'ers handles but thats just me. (26'ers are still okay aswell but the other two are probably preferable for you)

Hope it helps, good luck with the new bike!

Thanks a lot man! I will start looking around. I will likely post some links to some options I find and ask for opinions on them.

Wasn't trying to be a dick. Just seemed like a stretch to find a $6000 or something bike for $1200.

I distinctly remember seeing one on CG a few months back for something like $1400. Helluva deal, i know, but there are crazy deals out there.

Damn, and true, I got my 2014 upgraded Demo 8-1 for 2600, sometimes you just get lucky

I got out last weekend for the first time. I went down to the twin cities and rode some super flat trails. Can't wait till i can start riding some elevation.

So I'm planning on getting a half decent bike (used) and am looking at spending around $2000-$2500ish. Right now leaning towards a Yeti SB66, Ibis Mojo HD, Santa Cruz Nomad, Transition Covert or Banshee Rune.

Anyone have experience with any of these?

I plan on spending most of my time riding in the western Rockies (Kananaskis, Canmore, Banff area).

How experienced are you? what have you ridden in the past, and what do you plan on riding in the future?

I used to ride a ton and spent years on a street/dj mtb (custom Black Market Riot build) and then 3-4 years on a bmx. It's been a few years since I've been on something, but now I'm definitely interested in something I can spend a few hours to a full day riding. I want to be able to pedal (not super concerned about how fast I get up), but also have fun on the way down.

Any of those would be sick. You could buy an 26" SICK ass bike for near that amount. Maybe a carbon frame, at least decent components

Heres a Pinkbike search of USA/Canada. limited it to 26" and a price minimum of $1500, just skimmed the first page, most of the bikes look sick. Have at it.

Oh I'm all over Pinkbike and have a few potentials on my watchlist. I'm just wondering if anyone here has experience with any of those bikes.

Another one I may be looking at is the Santa Cruz Blur LT or LTc.

Also, does anyone have any experience with longer travel 29ers? I'm open to the idea of something like a Banshee Prime or Transition Covert 29er. I've heard pretty good things?

Had a Blur LT. Fucking loved it. Now have an Enduro 27.5, which an older enduro could be a good choice as well and they are had to be cheap. So no, can't give a lot of help unless you want to talk enduros or blur LT's

I wish there were mountains to bike on in Florida. I was just starting to get into some XC stuff in CO before I moved, I love biking. I'm stuck with my road bike for now though..

First ride of the year yesterday. Did a day trip to Fruita and rode the 18 Rd trails. It was almost too windy to enjoy it though.

Haha thats when you need to shut up and remember you're riding Fruita.

On my coffee breaks at work I'm usually browsing the good old internets. Today I was scoping some pro XC rigs, Pink Bike did some sweet bike checks:

Firstly the cockpit setup on Jaroslav's bike is mega wacky. It looks like he's ready to climb to the moon with it. Secondly those Dugast tubulars Nino runs are also mega fucked up. I don't even want to know how much work it would take to set those up, the tan colour of the casing looks great though so it's probably all worth it (I'd imagine they perform good to).
http://www.pinkbike.com/news/nove-mesto-xc-world-cup-day-one-in-the-pits.html

Some great looking bikes in here as well. Julien Absalon's BMC from both articles is so goddamn beautiful, when painted with just white or red trim they look weird though. And WTF at that string carbon seatpost clamp. Carbon is a beautiful thing but wow, I think I would sacrifice a few grams just to have the peace of mind that my seat is going to stay in place (Marco Fontana snapped his seatpost at the 2012 olympics, still got bronze but it took him out of gold or silver contetion).

Funny you should say that. My friend and I kept joking that riding back at home (Aspen/Snowmass area) is better riding than where we drove 3 hours to get to (Fruita). I've done the Horsethief Bench trails as well on a different trip, and I (personally) thought the Horsethief side was more fun than the stuff off 18 road. I could see the 18 Road trails being more fun if we had a bigger crew and someone could truck you up and down that main road.

Yeah 18 road is more of a family type area if you ask me. More mellow stuff that is definitely better with a shuttle. I'll usually go out with some buddies and do hot laps on Joe's. Horsethief and Mary's and the whole south side of the highway out there by Mack is more fun in my opinion. Also the lunch loop trailhead of the Tabeguache is 5 minutes from my house and I ride there all the time. It's sick

Ya, Horsethief and Mary's is way more fun IMO. Haven't ridden the lunch loop yet.

Anyone know any sick mountain biking hoodies? I'm not trying to be some a-hole going "oh look at me", I just want to have some dope hoodies to rep MTB, since all my skiing hoodies are now invalid

It sucks setting them up, but Dugast is the shit once you get it dialed

Idk why,but most of them are either super bro or super xc nerdy with not much in between. WTB amd Fox make some OK ones.

After running cotton casing tires on my road bike i'd love to try them out on a mtb. (i think dugast mtb tires are still cotton?)

They soak up bumps and imperfections in the road to the point that smaller stuff is eliminated yet they still feel stiffer and more responsive compared to an equal size rubber casing.

I beleive they're available in cotton or silk. I'd never run tubs on anything that isn't a race bike though (I've never ran them before) but I'd hate to get a puncture or pinch flat on any lengthy kind of a ride.

Also, whats the deal with buying off of pinkbike? How much is shipping generally with a mountain bike and is it common to get screwed over with a broken bike?

13389317:division.bell said:
Looking forward to tubeless though as I did pinch flat my front tire on a ride during the best part of the descent. A few patches, and the first of 10 total minutes pumping trailside with my mini pump later, and I was wishing I had done the conversion much sooner.

On this, I carry a 6" length of radio control fuel tubing in my saddle bag. It fits snugly over the threads of a presta valve, and once I have things into place I use it to inflate the tube to give it some shape and air volume. From there I'll fire off a cartridge into the tube or pump it up to give it sufficient pressure. It does take a pretty good blow but it definitely saves the effort of trying to pump a tube up from zero.

I've definitely considered using CO2, but it's really not worth the extra cost versus the few extra minutes of manual labor each time. My 4.6" tires require a lot of air; I've not tried it, but I am guessing it would take 3-4 25g cartridges to get it inflated. Maybe worth a one time experiment to really see how many it would take, but I wouldn't want to carry that many CO2 cartridges, or any at all for that matter, as a complement to my mini-pump, which is always with me during a ride of any distance anyways. Road bikes? I'd probably consider it, but not for mountain.

Speaking of fatbike tires...I just picked up a tiny Shimano digital air pressure gauge so I can hopefully get some accurate readings once I go tubeless. My last rides on the fatties I was barely hitting 5psi on my floor pump's gauge, but I doubt it's even close to accurate at that low of psi.

I've got a 2014 Norco Aurum looking to upgrade. Tax refund is coming in, but stuck between what to upgrade. Rear shock or wheel set.

Parts Considering:

-Fox Van R (no compression adjust) --> Cane Creek Coil

-Sunringle 29 -->Deemax Ultimate

Only choosing one for now, what would you guys do?

I'm looking to upgrade the 170mm Fox 34 Factory fork on my 2014 Genius LT to the 36. I've found some that were removed from 2015 Genius LT's, but only the tuned LT 700s have the Kashima coating.

Are the 36 forks on the 710 and 720 LT's unique only to those models? I can only find the standard Kashima 36 on Fox's website, so I have no idea if the other forks are the same but just minus the gold coat.

How do you feel about not having adjustment on the shock? In my opinion, the difference in the feel between coil shocks isn't huge unless one is lacking service, so the main benefit would be adjustment. If you don't need that, get the wheels.

That's actually pretty good to know. I have no complaints with my current coil so I'll just stick with that for a while.

How about a titanium spring vs. steel? Aside from weight / cool factor is it a noticeable and worthwhile upgrade?

Also, unrelated, what DH race series are in NM / CO / UT / ID other than GoRide? I used to race Mountain States Cup, but they have done away with that.

Bike.

Kind of a project for me, recently got this frame and switched all my parts over. Now has small block eights. I'm not huge into biking, but looking to get more into it now that I have a bike I actually like...

Parts list. Any input on stuff to upgrade asap would be dope!

Frame: deity street sweeper

Headset: FSA

BB: Spanish; came with frame, probably needs replacing...

Stem: blkmrkt underboss

Bars: blkmrkt bada-bing

Grips: odi longnecks

Brake(s): Avid juicy 3

Fork: Marzocchi dj3

Wheels: not too sure... probably need replacing...

Tires: kenda sb8

Seat: blkmrkt knuckle-something-er-other...

Cranks: some sort of three piece bmx style cranks...

Yah.... It was a 2008 blkmrkt 357 that I bought used, gonna gradually get it custom and decent... Mostly stock at the moment... But it's getting there...

Ti springs definitely are not worth it. Minimal weight savings, and wear faster due to ti being more brittle than steel. Stendec actually makes steel springs lighter than most ti ones, or you could wait until the hollow fox one comes down the pipeline to us mere mortals.
