Official MHSSC thread

This is the thread for everything Mt Hood Summer Ski Camp, with a title that's easy to find using the searchbar.

MHSSC is summer skiing for half the price of Windell's, with good food, good coaches, and good homies. We don't put pressure on you and we don't ridicule you for not being as good. I should know. I was a camper and now work as a counselor. We do everything we can to make sure everyone has a fun time and learns some cool stuff. That's what we're about. Website is: www.mthood.com

If you want a comparison to Windell's, check out this thread:

https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/532284/

Everything else goes in here. Share your stoke, general questions, and what session you're going. I'll be checking this thread daily and answering questions. Point of this thread is to spread the stoke and get more information out there.

Hope to see some of you this summer!

Yep. That's where all the summer camps on Hood ride. We ski the public park and lease a lane from Timberline for the private park. Same thing that Windell's and High Cascade do.

We actually made a day trip down to Bachelor when they decided to open for a couple days in July, but that was probably a one-off thing unless Bachelor decides to do it again.

@JohnnyBuz, post in here man! A lot of questions I've gotten by PM have been kinda similar. I'm sure someone else also wants to know exactly what you do.

@Riley, that blows dude. You think you're gonna be able make it back to finish up that second session this summer?

hope to be back this summer for a few weeks, how does one become a cit or what are the other ways of going cheaper?

sickest spot to be during the summer hands down. no brats. no "im better than you". coaches are tight and want to teach you. flybed outside. dank food. list goes on.

Haven't been to the MHSSC facilities in 2 years now. Only got to check them out when I was with the Stratton mogul camp a couple years ago. Food is fucking delicious...mexican night.

Did y'all ever get the tramp outside fixed up? Last I remember it was missing a ton of springs and ripping.

This place is the illest place on earth. Fuck Windells and all them bitches. If you want to have a good time go to MHSSC! Your gonna wanna go back every summer.

Yeah it's good. We replace when we need to. The one that was in when I left was still doing okay, but we'll probably need a new one again at some point this summer. And we have an enormous cache of springs so it's not a big deal to break one.

I'm not sure if I want to buy new pow skis and bindings or save my money and go to MHSSC this summer

Damn first world problems

That's what I was thinking, but being on the east, and this and the past winter have been pretty sub par, I'm thinking camp

had the illest time at MHSSC. best coaches best food and super close to the mountain. Yes the website looks ass, dont be fooled this place kicks ass. watch out for a guy named karl i hear he shoots fireworks at kids

And I'm no longer going to answer PMs/questions about employment. Just know that they receive a lot of apps every year and not many make it in.

Karl's fucked up the fireworks the last 2 years. Shot em in to the crowd both times, started a small forest fire the first year. Give him as much shit as possible!

Unfortunately i work all summer, but even at the last session in august its dope, going again this year. And all 13 sessions shit thats like 15 grand!

Haha I know right? But if you got it, why the hell not? A lot worse things you could spend it on.

And glad to hear you're stoked man! I won't be there anymore at that point, but everyone else will be stoked to have you again.

I'm not sure. But from experience, probably mixed or all park. Usually the kids who do only one discipline for a long time do park.

How late can you register? I'm graduating this spring and not sure where I will be living/working so I don't wanna register for a camp till I have a bit more clarity.

Further out the better, but we'll take you whenever pretty much. First time I went, I signed up like a week before and it wasn't a big deal.

The prices got booted up a bit this year. It used to be the "affordable" summer camp but now to go a day early it's $60 more dollars than last year. That and the actual session is jacked up. Not saying I don't love you guys and I'm still going again this year but what's the deal here.

Had an amazing time last year. The coaches are great, the food is good, and the vibe is pretty mellow. You also have some cool counselors like P-fo. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get the most bang for their buck. Hopefully I can get out there this summer, but I gotta figure some shit out. Session 9 represent!

So whats the official "Newschoolers" session looking like for this year, last year i met a bunch of homie at windells but im going with mhssc this year. maybe like 5 or 6? when are conditions best?

they're probably trying to make some improvements to the camp or had some unforeseen costs that they need extra money for. They aren't exactly in it for the money.

MHSSC is super fun! Vibe is super chill not lots of pressure by people who hate on you because they are better then you. Good environment to learn. Dont waste your money on Windells! Go to MHSSC mthood.com!

Obviously earlier is generally better, but not that much of a difference between 5 and 6. I'm Hoping to do 5-7 or 8, met a bunch of guys on here last year session 5.

Hmm looks like I may so MHSSC this year instead of Windells. The lack of an air bag isn't as big if a deal as I thought. After hitting an air bag last week I think it is alright but if you can do it on a trampoline you'd probably feel safe taking it to snow.

Even with that increase, it's still way more affordable than anywhere else.

The overhead for running one of these camps is MASSIVE. Lane rentals, passes, tons of food, tramp beds and springs, buses and vans, insurance, plus all the random little things that need to be replaced or fixed as they wear out. And they don't hire a lot of paid staff or spend much on advertising, either.

A lot of the frills of places like Windell's get sacrificed so the prices can stay as low as they are. And realize one other thing: the attendance has dropped a LOT since the recession. There used to be sessions of 300+, according to older staff members, which would be CRAZY now. But very little of that has been passed on in the prices.

Alright, I was just curious if something big was happening or what. And 300 kids would be nuts, there was what, one hundred something kids during session five last year, and that was a lot of kids. I couldn't imagine if there was 300. And like I said before, I still love MHSSC, I just wanted to know what was up. Thanks for the response. You going t obe working session 5 again?
