Official MHSSC thread

Yeah word. I mean there are big plans (seriously), but they need a bit more than that small increase to go forward. They need a full numbers rebound. Hopefully I'll see that day come while I'm still working there.

And yeah that's the plan! Won't know for about another month, but I'm planning 4-9 again.

@maknin21: I can give you one very good reason to go with MHSSC: two weeks for the price of one at Windell's, while still having tons of fun and meeting tons of chill people.

ive heard you don't meet tons of pros and get autographs and tons of free stuff at mt hood whatever camp. #expensivecamps4lyfe.

If this was already posted in here im sorry i didnt feel like reading through 2 pages of replies.

But, in session 13 are the jumps still intact and everything? Or is the park like significantly smaller and not as good.

I can really only go to the 13th one because i will just go straight to school right after that and i dont really want to pay for a plane ticket and gas to take my car to school. I go to Montana State btw.

Thanks for any help guys.

At that point, there aren't private parks anymore. It's just riding public with coaching (probably Nolan) which is on the upper mountain where the High Cascade park is earlier in the season. How much snow, and thus how many and the size of features, depends completely on snowpack. We're at almost exactly 100% of normal, but how fast that melts depends a lot on the extremely unpredictable spring weather around here.

There should still be both jumps and rails, though, and possibly even a pipe.

whats session 3 like? i went session 5 2 years ago and it was fun but i get out earlier this year

Weather is much more likely to suck, but there will be more snow, which will mean more trannyfinding opportunities under the mile and a longer/better public park--assuming they return to the traditional park rotation, and don't START with the mile park again like last year.

Yezzir. I'm actually gonna be there the following week, but it should be sick.

And if you want a free session, enter the drawing for one. It's open til Sunday. Hit up the website for details on how to enter.

camperstaff can be really bad or really mellow depending on how many kids there are that week, but with that being said you still get to ski every day, and pretty much get treated like staff so thats legit. Camperstaff is one of the best things about mhssc if you're truly dedicated to getting a job at MHSSC and bust your ass at camperstaff that opportunity will present itself.

I was camperstaff last year and it really was not that bad. I had plenty of time to ski and jump on the tramp and stuff.

That being said I was there session 2 and there was 19 campers.

C staff is tight because you don't have to follow the camper rules like campers, but you have so little responsibility.

@DGski$

Two of my snowboarder friends and I (skiier) are signed up for 5. Sounds like there's going to be a TON of Ns'ers there so hopefully we can all get along. Can't wait to meet you guys, maybe make a MHSSC cult and post sessions threads or a facebook group?

Really what we should have is an MHSSC forum, like there is for Windell's and several other camps, most of which still exist.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/198895180133896/

I think this may be what you're looking for, though. It was started by a bunch of kids from the legendary session of debauchery in 2010, but it's expanded a lot since then. Ask to join and someone will add you.

Looks like session 5 is gonna be big this year. Sounds about right. 5-7 are usually the meat of it.

yee, i went session 5 two years ago and we all dominated over the racers: usually its not like that , but we watched ski movies on the tv at night it was pretty sick

i haven't actually booked yet because my parents aren't sure whether they can afford it but i sure hope i can go...

I was down there a little over a week ago for the weekend and snow melt is probably about two weeks ahead of last year at this point, although if it stays cool and cloudy (or snows more like last week), we may catch up. PNW spring weather is goofy as shit.

First session started yesterday with a full private park, and the public park has been up at the Mile since last Monday.

That's about all I know, since I don't start for a little over two weeks.

And just out of curiosity, how many of you who are doing multiple sessions would be interested in a tour of the ON3P factory on your holdover Saturday? I arranged one last year, and I'd be more than willing to hit up Scott to set it up again or even try to make it a regular thing.

Not going to MHSSC but I will be living there with some MHSSC homies June 20 through July 25. Hope to some of you MHSSC friends up there!

What's the age situation like? Never been to a ski camp and I don't know if i'm too old for that shitt this year haha.

Uhhhhhh shit yuh. Definitely gonna have to hit up the trap house. You, Nate, Steve, Wild Bill?

I'm wondering this too, by the time i have the money to go it will be next summer and i'll be 17. I want to go to become a better park skier, but i also dont want to be surrounded by 12 year olds wondering what the disk shaped lumps in my pockets are. Other than seducing ladies left and right i think i will need some time to just chill with the dudes and complain about bosses and school and stuff.

Also flying, what kind of fees get tacked on for ski bags? Also ski gear and clothes and stuff, i have never had to check a bag in my life so i really dont have any experience.

Next, time outside of coached skiing. I'm intrigued by the summit of hood in terms of touring terrain, would it be possible to fit in some time for some laps on the summit?

Sorry for any spelling and stuff, im on mobile

Dude you will probably be right in the sweet spot of the age to be there. I'm going for the first time this summer (sessions 4 + 5) and I just turned 26 and plan on being "that old guy" that shreds. 17 is a perfect age to be there.

If you're ever worried about being too old, don't be. JonnyBuz is like 26 or something and he's coming for 2 sessions, and we have people who are in their 60s every year. There will be plenty of kids your age there, so don't worry about that.

Baggage fees depend on the airline. Google is the place for that.

As far as summiting Hood goes, it's sustained steep snow travel above the bergschrund, and possibly also ice/hard snow in the Pearly Gates, so you'd need to bring an ice axe and know self-arrest at the very least. I'm not sure if it's skiable from the very top, but you can almost certainly ski from below the bergschrund.

I'm actually going to start investigating up there this summer with one of the other counselors. Probably going to bring ice axes and see how far we can safely get. If there's a bootpack it may be doable without protection.

As far as you doing it as a camper, as long as someone on staff also has the gear and know-how and is willing to go, something could potentially be worked out. It's something I'd be interested in doing actually. Crate hike is certainly a possibility, and will get you close to 10000ft.

You can ski from the very top, my dad has summit hood over 15 times and half of those times he skied down. Late spring is the best time for that tho. and as far as equipment you can pretty much hike up to hawks back but once there it is full on ice axe, crampons, and ropes. and to climb it you need some experience at the least. Im hoping on climbing it with my dad next spring

^^^^ Thanks you for the help everybody

I don't know why, but I had this mentality that the age limit was 18, but I'm not sure what made me think that. Good to know that I can be as super old as johnnyBuz and still go.

As to climbing, I have no experience in real mountaineering, but maybe someday I will learn and summit it in late spring. What got me interested was the WCS edit intro (team epic fail?), but I know that it was filmed when there is still a good amount of snow compared to summer. As long as I can go steep and fast on snow in the summer I will be happy.

OK, new question for p-fo. Who does your jump/large-features-that-require-a-Cat/pipe building? Do you guys (mhssc) pay guys to build stuff and groom? Or does timberline hook you up or what? As i am reaching a kind of turning point in my life, what to do after high school, I am interested in working park crew. I am not thinking on taking any immediate action, but I am just curious.

I think you'll enjoy the Zig Zag Glacier. It's just a big, wide open snowfield, and when you hit it in the morning you can absolutely haul ass. The cornices are fun too, before the getback melts out.

Cats are operated by Timberline. We get a basic grooming every night, and a jump line rework every weekend (between sessions). Our park crew are the diggers. They maintain everything on a daily basis, mess around with different rail setups, salt, rake, etc. in exchange for lift tickets, basically.
