Official Euro 2012 Thread

This match is fantastic so far. Great back and forth play with great creativity from both sides.

That said, WAY too many hands up in appeal. It's like they're in 7th grade or something.

Wow. And Robben hits the post in the 35th. That ball bounces off a bit at a different angle and it sets up a sinch of a rebound shot.

sounds like the people in my city are cheering for denmark :)i live pretty close to the market place where all the pubs are and the match is displayed on a big screen and i suddenly hear an outburst of vuvuzelas, airhorns, whistles and shouting when denmark scored :)

pretty funny distraction from studying !

haha, keep crying into your clogs Dutchies!

Seriously though, get an equaliser because as a Portugal fan, I'd be delighted to see a draw here.

Dutchland:

Huntelaar: Top goalscorer in the Bundesliga!!

van Persie: Top goalscorer in the Premier League!!

Sneijder: playmaker for Internationale Milan.

van Der Vaart: playmaker for Tottenham Hotspur.

Robben: deadly left foot.

Combine them all and they can't score....

Luckily we have a moment of controversy to fall back on:

I wouldn't say they shut down the Dutch. The Dutch failed themselves. Robben made 2 horrible decisions (though he did hit the post on one of them) and Van Persie needs to learn to use his right foot...

The Dutch had chances all day long, and were booting it every which way in the wrong direction...

do you know the rules of soccer? the dutch player obviously kicked it up and into his arm. If it's not intentional, there's no call, which is why there was no call. good job by the ref.

Before the Denmark-netherland match i thought Netherlands was at least going to make it to the semifinals, now im not even sure that they will advance from their group. Portugal and germany is going to tear apart netherlands poor defence

It's football, and yes I know the rules very well.

Two times hands by the same player in the matter of a second isn't a coincidence.

You are supposed to keep your arms down, he comes running in pushing the ball away with his arm and then raises his arm even if it's unintentional it's still his fault and a penalty.

And no this is not me saying it, it's what some unbiased expert at BBC said.

It was a very coincidental contact. I had the ball kicked up into my hand so many times that it's silly when I played in high school. I only had it called a penalty one time and that was probably due to pity - we were up 6-1 at the time.

Any ref that calls that a penalty is being a ticky tacky motherfucker. Who's to say you can't just kick the ball into the other team's hand? is it their fault then? Pretty silly.

germany 1- portugal 0

last minutes were still quite exciting :)

mario gomez makes the winning goal ...

but imo this "intentional" thing goes a little too far sometimes. not saying something about this case directly, but imo, players could very often do a better job in putting their hands/arms directly at their bodies (look at badstuber who blocked that shot in the last seconds of the germany/portugal game).

sometimes i feel like they run around the box with their arms flailing around, effectively increase their "blocking" zone and then claim it wasnt "intentional".

obviously i am half german so i dont give a fuck about that situation, but imo its not as black/white as you say it is. i fully expect 2 or 3 out of 10 referees to give that penalty.

kinda lucky win in the end by germany, but who cares. dutch played awesome but couldnt score.

portugal and germany were very cautious at first and portugal only came out of the closet after they were behind.

a 0-0 or 1-1 would be pretty fair, but football isnt fair all the time.

In Fifa's Laws of the Game 2005, Law 12 says a free-kick or penalty will be awarded if a player "handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)".

That was ball to hand contact, not hand to ball.

wanted to see portugal win that game, they are my backup team when italy fails like usual.

great games today, looking forward to seeing ireland play tomorrow

that looked like a penalty, his hand was up and he denied possession of the ball and a possible scoring opportunity. Hands are by his side, no penalty.

yea exactly. no referee in an international tournament should be calling that a penalty.

Yes, I'll be pissed if it happens to France, but that's because i get caught in the heat of the moment.

it wasn't deliberate, it wasn't hand to ball...it's a non call.

haha, just had this pop up in my facebook feed...
