New fd wear edit

Even though I personally did not like the edit, I have to give it up to Mr. Bishop for presenting the most coherent and intelligent argument in this thread. It is good to see him in the fray of this, he doesn't have to do that. Obviously he has strong views on this subject, like most people who are posting do.

The thing for me is that I actually view this edit as 'conforming'. Not conforming to the stereotypical skier image, but conforming to a much broader social movement. Are the ideas presented in this edit unique to FDwear? No. Where did FDwear get these ideas from? What makes people in general think that the image portrayed is badass? I think to most people the answer is fairly obvious.

The plane, the cars / drifting, the guns, the money throwing, the club scene....nothing here is breaking the mold, they are merely trying to fit a much broader mold onto the sub-culture of skiing. No doubt rap videos have inspired many of the social ideas we encounter everyday, how is ripping one off 'breaking the mold'?

I don't think the creation of this sport was as much a phenomenon as some people would like to believe. People had skis, snowboard parks were built at ski resorts, people like to jump on skis. Thats basically all it took, I don't think too much 'outside the box' thinking was involved to be honest. We can thank snowboarding for saving skiing, but everyone knows that already.

I think the last great example of 'breaking the mold' was Robotfood. These guys truly did something that changed the entire direction of a sport. They created a sub culture within snowboarding, the way they presented their ideas had never been done before. This edit is not like that at all, these are all old, tired cliches that we have all seen a million times before. Did they take it up to a new level? For a ski edit, yes. On a broader scale, no. Why do we need MTV, Lil' Wayne influence in skiing? Is it something we are sorely lacking? This is a broad social influence that many young people relate too. FDwear just took it, pushed it one step further and tried to relate it to skiing. Was it necessary? I don't think so. It came off to me as childish and embarrassing.

These guys shot themselves in the foot (pun intended) with the guns. Honestly if the guns and the shooting out of the car window were not in the edit, no one would be worked up. People have strong feelings about guns, and canadians and europeans have very different opinions than americans.

Basically, no guns and this would have been a sick edit praised by a majority of the active members on this website, and a nifty piece of marketing for FDwear, not that it isn't already.

i'm surprised it hasn't been said yet, but I think they underestimated the power of the internet by posting illegal shit on video. I guarantee that they end up getting some pretty hard fines/tickets from this video. Hell, I got a 900$ ticket, which was actually a felony if I were to fight it (didn't fight it, paid the ticket), for something I posted on newschoolers about a smoke shack I helped with. Just letting everyone know there's rats everywhere on the internet, even on NS

at that point, wouldn't you just say "alright, this clearly isn't serious, I'll just laugh at the stupid antics and hope for good skiing?"

Unfortunately the skiing was subpar for a professional edit but I mean, they still had some dope tricks and anyone would have thought this was sick if it weren't made by the heads of a company.

I personally would love to do every one of those things in that video (besides drifting into oncoming traffic, which was probably spotted and staged to make it seem more dangerous and "risque."

I agree with bishop, I feel that y'all are arguing over very very petty shit that didn't hurt anybody, probably couldn't have hurt anyone, and all in all creating a huge marketing campaign from this edit. This campaign is probably the opposite effect y'all haters wanted. I never really even heard of First Drop before this video and now I actually have the smallest inkling to buy it despite the fact that I prefer 20k/20k breathability/waterproofness (I'm assuming that FD is not). They look like they have a fun attitude on life. Rockstar status.

Wake up with two girls, take a swig of vodka to cure the hangover, have a buddy fly the plane. Go drifting. Go shredding. Come back and party again. THEN tell me you didn't have the greatest time of your life. Sharing that experience in an edit is bad? Clearly the drinking and plane flying was staged. Music videos are staged as well, I feel like this was trying to capture that vibe.

and yes, I have done most of those things, which is why I'm not complaining about a little gun action, drifting, and very nice titties. /claim

The guns were a little over the top, yes, but GODDAMN. You think they wouldn't have thought this through? They are adults, running a company that clearly has some amount of success. They are integrated into the ski industry...and are here to make a run for some money. They have every right to do so.

I'm NOT trendy. I've liked 4bi9 since the beginning. Tom Wallisch and 4bi9 edits were the 1st I ever watched, and was highly entertained by the crazy shenannigans, but more importantly the skiing of these guys. Btw, over the past 3 years, I've had a chance to meet most of the guys in 4bi9, so that crew is special to me, and always will be. Oh, and Tom was not even seen drinking,or holding a drink in that House video even though he is of age,as are most the 4bi9er's.

Even though I'm 50, I'm not too old to remember what college daze were like. In general, the reality is, college age kids are going to party, and even trash their apartments, dorms, houses,,,etc. I will admit that the scene of destruction in 4bi9's video did make me cringe. I didn't know it was possible to make that big of a mess, but hey....it's not my place. Then there was the disrespect to Tom's Cup.....he worked hard for that haha!! JK, part of the memories Tom will hold of his amazing year, will be all the dents and scratches that Dew Cup bares, always reminding him of the great times with friends!:)

I do have a college age son btw, and I don't have blinders on. I'm sure some partying goes on. I've seen his apartment, and it's a mess etc. Thank goodness he has sense to not post anything incrimenating on line since he is underage.Let's just say I pray...A LOT! My other kids are strongly apposed to drinking and drugs do to myself being a RA and living a life of sobriety, and viewing the 4bi9,or any other media doesn't influence them to go out and be a copycat. If I worried about that, I wouldnt have allowed my daughter to go see Hunger Games at midnight last night!!

BTW, I haven't even commented on the 4bi9 House thread because I thought it would be inappropriate for a "mom" to find it a very funny edit. I liked it a lot. I'd be MUCH more desturbed to find out my kids were out driving around on public roads, armed with guns, shooting blindly and vandalizing road signs, than I would be to find out the were at a party celebrating the victory of their friend winning the Dew Cup and messed the house up. 4bi9 owns or rents that house. It's their problem to pay the consequences while we laugh. Finally, I would be very dissapointed if 4bi9 used guns, other than at a shooting range, in one of their future edits. I hope they don't because that isn't necessary. Armed with a beer is good/bad enough.

You know, that is a damn interesting point which I had not thought of until this conversation. In fact, this might be a huge piece of the puzzle that I am missing in my view of everything right now...

What you're saying is that Newschool skiing was just a totally regular thing to you when you were growing up as a young skier? So you have no establishment to rage against... as really from that perspective newschool would be the establishment. Shit even Newschoolers would just be the dead normal way that things happen.

So someone who grew up with action sports wouldn't even know that before it wasn't normal to be doing this stuff. Society looked down upon it, you were called outcasts and frowned upon by default... to you you would not have experienced this.

That would certainly account for a massive gap between the logic I'm using and the logic you're using. You could see something like this as a threat to what you very much like to do.

I think I get that perspective. Its a touch shockingly mature for me, but hey... gotta roll with the times.

I thank you very much for your eloquent manner in which you organized your response. It added a lot to this conversation. I also respect your opinion, and those who absolutely hate this video and everything it stands for.

I however still love it. Raging against the machine is fun.

The difference in opinion is the spice of life, and the variety that made skiing fun again. So what we should all do is lighten up, like what we like, hate what we hate, but realize that we're all skiers just trying to have a good time.

On a positive note, I noticed on Facebook that Lesh got a personal message from Mark Frank Montoya stating his overwhelming support for this video. That stokes me out hard.

Well, obviously.

Like I said in another thread, some people who started freeskiing/newschool in 1996-1998, whatever the real date is accounted as, may now have children, children who have grown up with newschool being "a thing", not a fight against the power, just a sport as much as anything else.

While I was 15 when I first picked up a pair of twins after snowblading a while, the sport was there. I found NS, Skiing Motion, all that stuff, and finally saw my first movie, Happy Dayz, and even in black and white, it really gave me some perspective that while there weren't too many twintippers around compared to boarders even in Talma, there was a "switch" side to skiing and it was a realized one.

To me, this edit was the Rebecca Black's 'Friday' equivalent for skiing. The worst edit ever made yet it will be famous and highly watched

CHING Ching chin ching CHINGbwaaahhhhh well use it to buy a gat some gold teefers a wrx and get on down wiggyy wigger style

the world needs middleaged wiggers too

or go ski someplace worth while

butthurtbishopblogs4bling

Mark frank montoya????

only you could be stoked out on support of a washed up never was gaytrayer

He's trying to convince me to go on a ski trip where he lives and buy beer with Newschoolers money.

I think I'll bite. I'd love to meet this dude in person.

At 22,000 Vimeo views, 10 forum pages on NS, and 12 pages on TGR, I'd say this video did exactly what Lesh intended it to do.

When was the last time The North Face had that kind of chatter about their brand? There's no such thing as bad press. Every time a skier talks (praise or shit) about this video, FD Wear wins.

I gotta say, the only thing I didn't like about this was how it seemed pretty fake. It's kind of a played out concept, and it didn't even seem natural, but if I look at it like a joke then it's pretty funny I guess.

If this was their actual lifestyle then I would like it a lot more, but it seemed so staged and over the top that there is no way they are actually anything like that. To me skiing is just being who you are, creative, and having fun. This video was them faking it, using an old concept, and didn't look like a whole lot of fun seeing as how they were acting.

But, since all it is is a marketing tool for FD then it obviously worked wonderfully.

Personally, if I started a company I would want it to be about more than making money but hey, I'm not Lesh. I don't think that anyone should take this video seriously, it's just basically an ad.

SN: It was a fake video by a money-grubber who seems to have sold out by using a played out concept. Why wouldn't he just use the money to fund a sick ski trip or something? You could still go party and shoot guns, and then it would actually be FUN not scripted.

Ha yeah.

I'm bored today and work is slow, so I might forwarded this video to Breckenridge Police. It will be interesting to hear their take on the matter.

Chief Holman can be reached at chief@townofbreckenridge.com

For the record, I think these guys are d-bags.

I did like the side boob though. Some of that flippy spinny shit was cool too.

I have been told summit county PD is conducting an investigation because they werent in the town limits of breck when the shots were fired.

why would you post the email of the breck pd chief? if the police wants to know about something i doubt they need hundreds of kids on ns emailing them a link to a video.

there always was that joke about the glock pocket... but i thought it was hilarious. more fun to watch than after dark :p

If serious troll is serious...

then Mr.Bishop weeps a tear for one notch of fun being sucked out of skiing.

How exactly does a couple of people associated with a outerwear company, doing some stupid stuff 1000s of miles from me, have even the slightest effect on the fun I have while skiing?

skiing as a whole. You know what he meant, so stop spinning what he says to be argumentative.

lol i can't believe people are actually hoping they get snitched on, or claiming to be snitching on them. NS has really come to this? fuck you people.

tried to read this whole thread, got to page 4. im way late to this convo but i'll go ahead and throw my piece in. skiing, flying airplanes, drifting i am down with. shooting guns out of a fucking car with no idea where the bullets are going to end? absolute idiocy. i can not believe some people are so incredibly dumb. DUMB

acting like a gangster is no longer cool

time to sell my saga and buy some arc'teryx

atleast he owns a plane. and plus FD is pretty good stuff my pants have always kept me warm n dry what else do you need to ask for

Pssshh, You're telling me that everyone on this site, if given the opportunity, would refuse to blast a magazine into complete WILDERNESS while flying down the road? I highly doubt that, and if you happen to do so, then you need to pull your balls out from your ass and flex your 2nd Amendment rights!

On another note, I agree that the Thug image has been blown way out of proportion and seems like they tried really really hard to look gangster. Real gangsters don't peacock ladies and gents. Nevertheless I enjoyed the edit and the Suby sliding was on point.

Oh, and I still don't plan on ever buying/wearing FD product from all the negative reception both current and previous.
