New fd wear edit

why does anyone on ns give any fucks about how they run their business/live their lives...it was a fun and sick edit. well done FD crew

Did you read the thread?

We have moved on from the video...

Mr. Bishop and his uneducated followers have begun insulting our intelligence, have stopped responding to our posts and have waived the white flag on just about every argument in order to try and save face.

Thank you for your uneducated contribution to this thread, your opinion is appreciated!

probably a quotient of 9-13.....

It is SO FUCKING IRRESPONSIBLE to shoot guns and act the way they did. And I refuse to be represented by such senselessness.

Hahah love this stuff, Coming from someone involved with the video and who knows Lesh, (I shot most of the park skiing, minus some of Lesh's park shots.) I find it hilarious that all these people are so concerned with a video that has very little to do with them. If you like watching people act all gangster and find this video extremely hilarious then watch it. If you do not, then stop watching it. Very simple concept. Finally, I hope you all realize that the amount of discussion caused by the video puts FD Wear into the spot light once again, so if you absolutely hate FD Wear and what it stands for, you may want to consider this and stop discussing it. But these are just ideas I had floating around. Good luck, have fun, and stop taking the world so seriously. Best

Some of the people arguing my point of view are being pretty dumb, Mr. Bishop; I apologize for that. I respect your willingness to discuss this as a human being, and to discuss this intelligently and to stand by your opinions and use a voice meant for conversing. I also respect what you've done with this website, the community you've allowed to form, and your part within that community.

And so to the meat of the matter,

I totally disagree with you on this, I thought this video was fucking dumb and way too try-hard for a company trying to push sales. Like I said earlier, this whole thing feels like a grope for PR, which is fine I guess, if you're in to that sort of thing. But can we not confuse the issue, here? This wasn't freeskiing. Freeskiing, in my mind and it sounds like in yours, is a place where literally any philosophy, mind set, belief structure, whatever, can enter and flourish. Like you said earlier, diversity, different images no matter what they are, it's all good for freeskiing. I don't think what makes freeskiing, well, freesking is the combination of all those things, like freeskiing is some sort of melting pot for anyone and everything, what makes freeskiing for me is that it's that blank slate. It's an individual sport. No matter what you bring in to it, you get something out of it and if you want, you can let the community around freeskiing instruct your experience.

I enjoyed the hell out of the newest 4bi9 House, that shit was hilarious. But that's what they do on their own time, that's who they are outside of freeskiing. I feel like this edit tried to make it look like the person Lesh and pals are outside of freeskiing, is the entirety of freeskiing. That didn't sit well with me.

TL;DR

What pissed me off wasn't that the dudes in the edit were doing wild things and being all edgy and shit, what pissed me off is I felt like they tried to pass it off as freeskiing. This entire edit was about them, trying to argue it off under the umbrella of freeskiing just doesn't work.

The only claim that I'm supporting is that you (and those arguing against) take this way too seriously.

Does it matter if I write badly?

Are we even arguing about anything anymore?

Lets also be clear - thoughtful, meaningful posts stopped a long time ago.

it would totally suck to be a 30 something, socializing on a ski website in which the general population is 15, using big words and vague analogies to push the "lets all be punky and rebellious" agenda.

i hope my mid life crisis doesnt suck that much

(that was a straight personal attack, i apologize, but really? why would you give your age)

It does affect me. That is what is going on here.

but at least you filmed the cool part of the video. props to some good shots.

Of all the comments I've been reading, this I had to reply too. I can honestly say that I would under NO circumstances enjoy randomly shooting guns, shooting up road signs etc.. Nothing fun OR entertaining about that AT ALL!

He helps runs the site you fucking dumbass. Why can't he participate on something he has helped to nurture? And would you rather him not post and have this forum swamped by immature fucks such as yourself? You probably jizz yourself when steve stepp posts on here or some other orange name being just as fun and immature as everyone else. I hate your post and wish this were a different time period to where people could lay down a can of ass whooping and not get sued by mommy and daddy.

Mary i agree with you on this. However, I can't help but notice how trendy you are. I think you're a great person but I see you loving 4bi9 edits when they're trashing their house being belligerent drunks. I know it's fun, and I have no problem with it. However I don't promote it and enjoy as much as you, a mother, does. I hate to say it but would you enjoy that edit as much if it were your kids trashing the house and shattering glass, only to film it and post it on a website for thousands of others to see? In cases like these you're all conservative but if it's anything remotely close to 4bi9 or TWallisch no matter what they do you'll "like it". Deep down I know you didn't like watching the end of the last 4bi9 video, you're a mother, you have children. Just explain this to me because like I said in most cases I really look up to you but recently I've started to question you

seriously what the fuck is wrong with people, if you dont like to get reckless then what the hell are you doing in the action sports community in general, if people were not reckless this sport wouldnt be at the point it is now.

Hey BTW - thanks a ton for a solid response. I really appreciate it, I'm honest to god not wanting to get completely irresponsible on this matter, and would love to discuss it at length. So thank you for jumping this conversation back up.

The meat of my matter,

I can not agree with you more than the fact that you hated this. I can not agree more with anyone that hated this... they fucking hated it. They hated everything that it was about. I even understand that, as this type of image back in the day would have pissed me off too. I absolutely used to HATE Tanner (sorry buddy) and the C-Crew for their gangster bullshit.

The thing is that we're mixing image and skiing. I think that is the crux of where this image gets confused. I mean really in all contexts of life, skiing is a completely ridiculous thing. There is no purpose to it for survival, it does not add to our society. HOwever, its really, really fun. Skiing is an act, which in itself is extremely pure. I don't know the last time I was slashing a huge pow turn or hitting a big jump that I was concerned about image in that moment. Skiing is pure.

However, skiing requires an incredible amount of equipment. As such, it is like almost no other sport, deeply buried in consumerism. Skiing has a higher average household Income than Yachting and Golf. Yes that is true... we are the richest fucking sport on the planet.

The second factor is how much people define their lives as a skier. Like no other sport, people who ski wear it like a badge that states who they are as a person. What you ski, how you ski is who you are.

Mix this incredible self-identity, massive consumerism, and more money than any other sport and you end up with a super weird consumer space.

One thing that happens, is that companies (though small in the grand scheme of things) are actually able to do well for themselves, if they can appeal to a certain portion of the market. Its a very small market - as overall skiing is an incredibly small, niche and elite sport - but it is an extremely loyal market.

What then happens is that very specific segments of a small, lucrative sport become extremely crowded - from a marketing standpoint. When you think traditional skiing, there's a bazillion players in the space that are already well set. Don't even try to touch the distribution / shop mafia that comes with the traditional space.

Snowboarding broke out of this model, and literally (fact) stole half of the skiers. Snowboarding appealed to a young segment of the sport that was sick of the stuck up bullshit that skiing had become. If you weren't there, trust me... skiing in the early-mid '90s fucking sucked. I stood there in my super tight racing boots with a skin suit on, watching snowboarders hitting jumps and rails. All the while I had to stare at 'no skiers in the park' signs posted everywhere around that fenced in area. I even once had a ski patrol tell me 'the reason that skiers can't go in the park is because snowboarders are in control in the air.'

From a philosophical standpoint, what I back is the fact that skiing finally took a stand. We finally rose up against the establishment that was boring, and instead of starting snowboarding we decided to break down the boundaries and do it on our own. Shit man, in the early days I used to get snowballs thrown at me because I was a skier in snowboard territory. However - we didn't give a fuck... we were newschool freestyle and we were all about breaking the rules.

We took a stand, and we did things differently. I didn't agree with Tanner and the C-crew, I didn't like the way that some of the pros presented themselves... but I sure as shit liked them better than hermann Maier and doing slalom gates all day. I didn't like everything about it, but what I loved is that we were doing what we wanted, instead of what someone else told us to do.

Fast forward a few years (today) and no longer are we the under-dogs, we're all of a sudden the big shit on campus. We're in the olympics, we rule the X-games, we grab the Dew Tour daytime TV spots... we're the big boys. Action sports have become more mainstream than baseball.

Some people are fucking stoked on that, and more power to them. Our image is clean, parents can tell their kids they'll be an olympic hero, you'll get on american news for what you do.... we're bigtime now. Corporate sponsors are everywhere.

HOWEVER - when people try to say that this FDWear thing is a bad marketing ploy, they're extremely wrong. Putting out a completely over-the-top gangster edit (which really if you're not getting angry you can realize is making fun of the gangster thing) is the most genius marketing move they can make. Its too easy to say "terrible marketing what the fuck are you thinking" - but remember - every other outerwear company in the sport is trying NOT to be that. We can't get it out of our heads that the olympics, prime time TV and the 'real' skiers are looking at us... so as companies we sterilize and make suer everything is kosher.

FD Wear with an edit like this appeals to a small segment of the market. It alienates a massive segment of the market... but those people would have been completely comfortable (and totally happy) buying North Face, Spyder, Orage... any other brad which has a rad image to choose from. However, those people that they didn't alienate.. those ones that want to identify with that 'gangster' image - are going to absolutely love it. You don't need an immense customer base in the ski industry to be extremely successful. You find your niche, and you make sure to service them.

Its very akin to why we've never gone over-the-top with Backcountry on Newschoolers. I mean sure, lots of people here are into it... we're all about it.... we're all about covering it... but the niche of NS is the fact that its roots are in east coast park skiing.

So yes - you can totally hate this video. All the people that do are not wrong for hating it.... but they're wrong for saying it has no worth and it is a stupid marketing gimic. Lots of us skiers out here love living our stupid little piece of non-reality at the mountains as some fantastical character. Sometimes we're a white ghetto kid with baggy shit... we watch edits where guys from boulder who ski give the fantasty of a thug life....

There is not answer to this thread. That is the key, and that is also the beauty. The difference of opinion, and the extreme passion to defend it is what makes this sport the most awesome thing on the planet.

Whether you're a gangster park skier, some gypsy street hippy, a mountain man with a snow-covered beard or a bad-ass GS racer...

We're all skiers.

I'll respond to this at length in a moment, but my first thought is that I don't have the experience you do. I didn't come in to this sport while it was still forming and being created, which is why I think I'm looking at it from a totally different angle than you are.

Give me a sec, I'll post a full response.
I totally understand where you're coming from... but its my career to do this. That throws a bit of a monkey wrench in the 'lame' argument.

I only give my age for perspective. I was around with NS was born, have seen it through its growth, and am now here at its maturity. Its important not only to look at the present, but the past and the future too.

i have read the first 2 pages.... just wait untill a 12 year olds edit copies this and they shoot some one.

fuck off. this is shit those guys do just about everyday. not some made up show to get people to talk about them.

this thread epitomizes why the so called "newschool" community is dumb as fuck. stop saying this is the why you hate park skiers when obviously they were not in the park half the time. this shit is ridiculous. are people really arguing about the cost of signs? for real? that is just laughable. all yall that really feel affected by this edit should just go back to your mommy's breast and begin suckling at the teet, cause you all sound like a bunch of babies. word to bishop though. guy actually knows what the fuck he is talking about. all the rest of you infants have fun saving the children through meaningless banter over the interwebz. dont forget to put your helmet on before you go ride next, cause not doing so would be irresponsible.

Its actually Doug Bishop. Josh Bishop is the Armada team manager, and he and I love joking about the fact that nobody ever gets the two of us in the right order.

To write in words how terribly retarded you are is not possible. Read the fucking text you quoted, oh wait, you cant read because you are too retarded. "ITS NOT FUNNY BECAUSE THEY ARE ACTUALLY SERIOUS." Let me break that down for your pea sized skull. There is no humor in their edits because that is their lifestyle, therefore it is not a made up show to get people to talk about them. Good try, not.

I know haha, I am so sorry , I realized as I was looking if it posted ok. You must understand this, its 1 am Montreal time, and I just worked on Photoshop for a bit to make this. Great haha

Hahahha... all good, 100% back it, and don't worry you're by far from the first person to make the mistake!

Well I worked with you guys as a photographer for a minute and when i introduced myself at If3, you had though i was a guy all along, so we are set on the mistaking.

Corrected version ( photoshop skills are on point )

I took offense to you calling them delinquent douches. someone deserving of that title is someone who creates a persona to look thug and impress people. i dont care to get into anything. just wanted to tell you that your a dipshit and dont fuck with GBP

You sir are the dipshit. Go suck GBP's dick in a back alley, while they beat you like the dick sucking bitch you are. It humors me that you try to intimidate me with this snowboard "gang". They are just as white and well off as the rest of us. I think its real cool that they go around getting in street fights and smashing car windows. Cool, why dont we all just go around fucking up peoples property. Real badass. If they tried to start shit with a real gang they would be ended in a second. So while you try and act all hard with your cool ass crew, you really aren't. Anything else?

no thats it. you are the smartest most all knowing person on the internet. youve got everyone figured out and youre better than the rest. congrats.

Thats what I'm talking about....

Those who support this will be fuelled by those that hate it.

I'm telling you, its just like gangsta rap in the '80s. I've been there and done this, and it created a massive industry that still is around today.

People may disagree with Bishop, but he's smart and knows his shit. I laughed when someone tried to call him on using the phrase "Never ever ever", saying that it was "really eloquent for a 33 year old" or whatever. Seriously guys... you really have to dig that hard to tear him down? That's some petty shit.

Although I hated the video too I don't see anywhere where Bishop is seriously WRONG about anything he's saying, it's all opinion, and it's an informed one.

Also - telling him he's unprofessional for trolling? THIS IS NEWSCHOOLERS. We are the DEFINITION of E-trolling in the ski community, and it's fucking fun. Bishop has been trolling harder, better, and longer than many people on here can understand. I didn't even read the post on the other websites in question and I think it's awesome.

INB4 anyone says anything about me being a Doug Bishop fanboy or on his jock or something, I don't give a fuck because he's the man.

Now for my opinion on the video:

The video was dumb because they were trying too hard. If that was actually how they do shit, that's one thing... but it just didn't feel genuine.

Besides the fact that it didn't feel genuine to me, my only other gripe with it is that being raised by a law enforcement officer / tactical firearms instructor, I think shooting the signs was moderately irresponsible from a safety standpoint (although I think people are placing a little too much weight on that) and very irresponsible from a destruction of public property standpoint, I hate seeing signs that are shot up. But then again, who knows how much damage I've done skating and sliding urban rails, as well as street art stuff when I was younger... soooo I don't have much of an argument there.

Besides that it was awesome. I've personally done a bunch of that shit - partied and broke stuff, driven much more recklessly than that (claim). It's fun.

It's not so much that I hated this video, more the support it got from a lot of people on the facebooks and the intertubes. And not just because it had support, you know, I totally agree with you on the different images and lifestyles being good for freesking. And as you said, appealing to a niche market is really what this is all about (and a smart move, business wise*); what irked me was that the people who supported it either had the lazy intellectualism of the bro's throwing totes original memes around, or they truly believed that there was nothing at all wrong going on in the video.

Yeah, it was satire - if you couldn't figure it out, just look at the grills. Yeah, it was staged - they were clearly shooting blanks and only once did they drift in to oncoming traffic. It's hard for me to explain where I'm coming from, but it was the marketing that, "Hey! It's okay to be sexist, to break laws, and to be a giant douche canoe canoeing your douche self up douche creek because freeskiing". I just can't get over that as an excuse. If they were honest about it it would have sat way better with me, I'm down with 'being wrong' and all that. I would still condemn shooting out of a moving car on public roads (holy fuck is that not the stupidest goddamn shit you could ever do), the blatant sexism, and the general 'let's see how dumb we can be because ignorance is fat shit' attitude of the whole thing, but I wouldn't care as much because that would be on them, and not on me.

I don't mean to presume, please correct me if I'm missing the mark here: I think I understand where you (and probably Lesh and pals) are coming from, freeskiing helped you take a stand on who you were and what you wanted to be, it allowed you to tell your world to fuck itself and it's consequences because damn was it good to be a freeskiier. You took what you learned from your life and used it to help shape freeskiing in to what it is, and I have so much respect for everyone in on the sport around that time. And being a part of that probably taught you a lot, too, right? I mean, I came in to freeskiing late to the party, after it was established as a serious thing, and there was a lot of business and infrastructure backing it. I came in to freeskiing knowing that I was nothing to anyone, no reason to consider myself as someone with any worth in the world. Freeskiing gave me the focus to figure out who I wanted to be; what freeskiing has taught me is who I am.

After reading your reply and writing this out, my main complaint isn't so much that they did it, more so how they went about it. Kosher is pretty bullshit, that's not what I'm saying - they're pandering to a niche crowd that loves nothing more than to be pandered to (which is pretty fucking smart business ethics, I'll admit), and reinforcing the dumb ideas that crowd has. Again, it was satire, I know that; however, where the satire ended, there was still a lot of dumb thoughts being sold to that niche crowd. The things I loved about this edit are firstly how stoked they are to have a business up and running doing well enough to put this together; I loved that they have a plane and someone who spent the time to get a pilots license and then flew the plane to fuckin' Breck for a day; I loved the drifting, and I loved the skiing. They could have easily done something else for the other crap, kept the same aim at that niche market, and not come off as willfully ignorant (which I'm not saying they are) even through the satire. I love freeskiing, but I hate (literal, seething wroth) some of the attitudes within it if not the reasoning behind those attitudes, and I think that there is a difference between being dumb, and being fucking dumb.

TL;DR

Be dumb, not fucking dumb.

*I'm sorry for one of my comments earlier about this edit not being freeskiing. I should have said that this edit isn't what freeskiing is to me, and I think the thinking behind it is dangerous for everyone in the sport.

Thanks for the sane discussion Mr. Bishop, I'd love to keep it going.

Yea, supporting a small company run by skiers for skiers is stupid. B Devine? Lesh? WHO ARE THOSE GUYS?! They definitely don't know the industry that's for damn sure. "Thug" is OUT. Get with the hip fad losers. Sheesh.

Thanks Link, real eye opener.
