MSP, and the PURSUIT of EPIC

got any time on your hands? i think youve watched it more than anyone else, but claim to hate it the most?

so I really dont agree with anything you said, the different shots at the start were to show you where they have gone this year. and the shot in the woods was really cool (that was eric pollard) also if level one could get suburu to sponser them I bet they would. I also like slow motion shots. and the intro with sammy was very well done. if you dont like it post a better one.

Is it just me or did the quailty of the shots look absolutly breath taking even on the shitty internet upload, the pipe drop in had soooo much definiton (sp?)

It was just unoriginal in my opinion.

Forgive me for thinking that.

I know there are others who share this view I have.

It just seems to me, that if a company is going to base itself around film/an art, that art should continue to be refreshing and consistently make people question what they think they know.

Filmmakers in hollywood would never dare make films with such similar styles if they really valued how they were viewed as a company. Spielberg would never create two or three Shindler's Lists.

And on the subject of their movies being so widely purchased and bringing in alot of profit... does that really justify their excessive reptition and fear to indulge in other ideas?

I mean. They're filmmakers. Supposed to be artists. All I'm saying, is that this format just really doesn't do the athletes justice in my opinion, nor does it do filmmaking as a whole justice.

"Success is dangerous. One begins to copy oneself, and to copy oneself is more dangerous than to copy others. It leads to sterility." - Picasso.

Now honestly, in today's ski-world, what do we really have for ourselves? The companies we buy skis from are often viewed as uncaring. Many magazines are in it for the money. Competitions are not judged by a wide-enough cross section of skiers. Film and a few pieces of literature and this website are really the only things we have in our power anymore to make our voices heard.

I just think its silly to let teasers like this exist, just because they've had success in the future. It's time to pressure them into breaking some patterns.

i tihnk the actual movie could have some sick shots, msp used to make good movies, maybe they will make a come back.

im too drunk to read everoynes responses.. but i was abl to read yors. and i will say that it is wrong, wrong WRONG. overanalysis of something you should just WATCH! shut your mouth and watch it. i dont agree with half of what MSP has done in the ski industry, but dont rip on the trailer when it is actually really better htan 99% of the ski media out there, regardless of their budget or atheletes.

lol this flame msp thread might actually be more rediculous than the one a year ago..... and msp didnt even insult anyone this time.

many of those points were irrelevant, although well articulated. You confused film subject with film style in your Spielberg reference. So no, he wont make shindlers revenge but he will make a few movies about fathers and sons bonding during extremely fictional dramatic experiences. and maybe 3 or 4 jurasic parks thrown in there.

i understand your points are about making your own voice heard, but making your voice heard by criticizing someone elses voice seems pretty unproductive, why not start a magazine that doesnt make any money while your at it.

my opinion, while im standing on this soap box then, is let msp do what they want, let L1 do what they want, let Iberg do what he wants, it not progression is evolution..... thru mutations and revisions..... Picasso didnt just start to paint like that one magical day after someone told him to paint like i want you to!!!! Also try to remember that theyve been making movies for a long time, "progression" is much easier to measure between your first and 4th movie youve ever made.... hell even poor boyz movies will eventually seem the same after ive seen my 10th one.

so teasers like that should exist, its painted with the same old msp brush but then again i watch movies to see the skiers, not learn about next years fashion or what emo song ill use to cut my rail edit with.

flame on.

haha and i actually think your 26 point initial post is humorous but pls use the same finely toothed comb to go through every trailer, id like to compare every peice of art in a point form pro vs con spreadsheet.

its not that its slow mo, its fucking super slo-mo half the time, like 1/4 speed what the fuck is that, you atart o loose perspective of waht the fuck is going on....o fcourse itll look good in 1/4 speed

that 7 tail/blunt? good but not noteworthy, he got the grab halfway through...it was a 7...how progressive is that shit?

that 1080 looked like tanners sw 9 on chads (because he lost the grab for the end of teh rotation), except the 10 was on a way smaller jjump; therefore more hucked, and tanner had an excuse for losign the grab halfway through since he DID A SW 9 ON FUKCING CHADS

-msp does not live up to its potential...

if any other ski company had the budget of msp they could make a way sicker orignal core movie (not mimicing but in the same spirit as absinthe)...imagine if L1P could hire top knotch atheletes and helis?

msp is truly becoming waren miler, who i beleive has soem newschool skiin gin it as well!! but they both don't progress teh industry, instead skimmign the top athletes from "core/progressive" companies (vanular, sammy)

21) the pontoons look like flippers.

What does that have to do with MSP at all it is not like they made the skis. And the skis are fucking sick.

personally i thought the buddha statue was some very compelling footage, and the mystery skier in the woods was clearly Eric Pollard. I didn't really like the outro very much but the whole movie is going to be great.

And yeah right the buddha footage was the only shot they used to convey the culture of the area; they also show tanner and some other guy entering a house the traditional way: clapping and bowing to show intent. Now, I think you're one of those people that isn't very spiritual or very smart for that matter (not that they relate in any way) but I would have to say you definitely don't get what this movie is trying to portray by these shots.

i corrected myself in my post below.

and this thread is gay. everytime i read another post i get angry about things that don't really matter.

let this die.

I wasn't thinking this way. And I do see your point of how this is pretty unproductive. However, there is at least a small chance that my thread made at least one person re-evaluate what they're watching, and maybe figure out for themselves if they're stoked on this or not.

I don't know what I mean by that. But yeah. I still don't dig their format, but I see that this probably isn't the most efficient way to go about having stuff like this changed.

are you all forgetting that there's a BC wilson flip in there!!?!?!?!!?!!? and im sure they must have done something right about filming-otherwise they wouldnt be such a big company

all i can say is that trailer was fucking amazing. the shots of the temple in the begining were cool and the tricks blew my mind. them 7s by carlson were orgasmic, dub back ehat, and pollards butter thing was sweet too. msp is sick

Like I said before it's all personal preference and what you like. That's why there's different movies. Also, please don't ever get your panties in a bunch over a TEASER again when the movie hasn't even came out yet. Haha my lord why not just stop?

all things aside here guys...was that a shot of hugo with a fucked leg/knee? Could it be true that he got hurt this year??? NOOOOOOOO.

I don't necessarily care for matchstick but you can't tell me you guys didn't see half of those shots and sit back and say...FUCCCKK. there is some pretty sick stuff in there i'd say

you missed the point by a fuckign mile, its the spirit of the company represented by teh teaser, not the actual fucking material cockbag

and rory bushfield is not....?

MSP videos are sick. That is all there is too it. If you think other wise, you are really just being close minded towards your fellow skiers

what happened to skiiers just being a bunch of bros that think skiiing is dope? Some one does a 3 its dope, someone does a 10 its dope, someone puts video clips together its dope. Get Over yourselfs, its skiing. EMBRACE IT, or shut the fuck up.

I have been one to support MSP in the past. Ski Movie 3 and Focused are still a couple of my favorites. Ski movie in particular seemed amazing at the time. The riding was sick, the editing wasn't bad (music meh in some cases, but some great songs too), a good balance of park and big mountain and all that, mind blowing segments (CR, Tanner, SETH, crevasse, Candide, Pep, etc). The problem is that MSP has gotten stagnate.

They found a formula that works for most, especially people who dont really care about park but love big mountain.

If you watch the most recent trailer, and compare it to say Yearbook and Hit List, you would be hard pressed to find any significant differences. Basically, they are just sticking to a formula. And the biggest flaw in this formula (at least to me, and many others) is that it is redundant. It seems like a slightly updated Warren Miller production. The locations are somewhat the same, riding the same, etc. etc. Now with a larger budget, they get a tiny bit exotic, but it really doesn't appear that way.

I remember watching Yearbook for the first time on a nice big screen in a theater. The helicopter shots blew me away. It was visually stunning. But when Hit List came out, they were the same shots, just different riders and a few different tricks, the jist was the same. And now in this trailer, the skiing is relatively sick, but the shots are just the same. It is stagnatation. They are cool and all, but if their whole movie, or even a majority was the same type of shot, the meaning or impression loses its effect.

The artsy shots are like elementary artsy shots. Other companies, including other ski film companies, have already captured the same style, and are moving on to other ways of capturing skiing, the lifestyle, etc. But MSP is just a tad slow. And considering their budget, you would think they could just blow the whole thing open, but they don't. The movies are practically a carbon copy of one another. I used to admire the diversity of skiing in the movies, but it just gets boring, and I have a long attention span. EVERY SHOT IS IN SLOW MOTION. I like slow motion, in moderation. But seeing somebody air a 10ft drop in SLOW MOTION (read: super duper slow motion) just gets boring. Every shot is in slow motion. There are usually just a tiny handful that are in real time, but that doesn't add up to anything substantial. And another product of slow mo is that there is less actual fotage. It is a collection of just dragged out shots in the larger scheme of things.

MSP has also taken a nice shift away from a lot of newschool skiing. Sure, thats fine for them to do so, but the watching value sucks. In Hit List there were two rails, but by god there were 5 fucking shots of Ingrid Backstrom skiing the same unimpressive line, and more commentary than a damn Sunday morning talk show. I think The Hit List really showed the shift in their movies, or perhaps lack there of. The unnecessary amount of commentary is parallel to that of Warren Miller flicks (on a side note, I completely respect Warren Miller, I just don't really care for the movies. They ruined a potentially amazing and certainly epic segment on South fucking Georgia in Storm by this garbage formula). Also, the inclusion of some big riders is just for that purpose: they are known riders.

I guess my biggest problem with MSP is their current movies don't have any watching value. I mean once is cool and all, maybe twice, but thats about it. If you see them in a theater, you wish you had a remote to skip just the dragged out commentary and the like. The big mountain is sick, but usually from only afew riders. I completely love big mountain. I love skiing it,and if it is well filmed, it can be a good watch. They tend (and did) over focus on riders, especially Ingrid Backstrom, whos riding wasn't even impressive. Some people need to remember that a ski movie can capture some essence of skiing (see immersion or whiteshine) but they are also sources of enterataiment. If it is filled with stuff that is generally uniteresting or unimpressive, then why see it. Or better yet, why set that as the standard. Many people try to do that, and thats the only reason why I even wrote this much, which wasn't even necessary.

My last gripe is that a trailer, and MSP's in particular, are deceiving. They seem so good, but the movies turn out to be junk. The past 3 teasers were sick. The past two movies have been less what was to be expected, and we'll see in the fall if it is 3 of 3.

msp is a business, and they dont make a very good product. it isnt just as simple as "it is skiing, so you have to love it" because it really isn't so finite.

bah

So for that slow mo shot of Sammy towards the end, did they basically just tell him, "Okay, for this shot, we're going to be real progressive and do EXACTLY the same thing we've done for the past three years. But don't worry, they'll be able to tell the difference because of the year model of your gear! Oh, and do a mute. We've always loved those."

Well, one more year... do they really think the real progression of the sport lies in synchronized jumping?

^^I've found that most skiers aren't up for progression and originality and change tho, I think people want to tsee the same crap all the time. I don't feel like anyother film companies are really being that progressive either.

Not tryin to mean it as a personal attack matty, but to call that 10 of bushy's hucked, you better be showing the world you have more skills than him....Or saying it wasnt a teaser worthy shot, I had to then watch your teaser expecting to see a lot better shots, or tricks thrown down, none of these were found in your teaser...Thats all. Not trying to get personal with ya buddy....And sorry I upset your lady friend too, I probably wont ever have a better job than you in this industry...

up until like number 5 i thought you might not be a retarded child sticking crayons up your nose while wearing a football helmet, i was realy dissapointed when you kept going

It wasnt a trailer at all just an intro done with Motion and then clips of skiing

I liked the beginning with simon dropping into the pipe but besides that it sucked .

THE MUSIC IS GAY

Wait, who the heck are you in the industry and why do we care?

The whole: "you better do better to criticize someone" is such bull. Have you ever crticized a president? Football player? because you are probably none of those, yet you had an opinion, right?

Well, i think that any skier can have an opinion on skiing, and they would be right in having it. I think that the 1080 was hucked, the grab not held etc. In comparison to me, of course i can't do any better, far far from it. But hell, compared to other pro skiers, that 1080 was bad. We aren't comparing ourselves to the pros, but pros to other pros and films to other films, using something called an opinion.

My point? you don't have to be a pro skier or a pro filmer and do better to criticize anyone or anything. It's such a cop out to say otherwise. "oh no, you better do better than him to tell him that sucked or ill wet me trousers!". Come off it.

Ok cool, you are absolutely right. In order for me to criticize something or judge something, which is done in EVERY SPORT IN THE WORLD. I have to be equally as good as the athlete. The olympic judges are definately as good as the athletes when they criticize them! Movie criticizers definately make movies that are just as good as hollywood movies.

That point was useless.
