Is Tahoe on track to have another horrible season?

Can't decide if it's worth it to go up on Sunday/Monday or just wait for the next storm so it can snow on top of a base.

Latest model I saw had up to 7" of liquid thru Monday. But there may be up to 2" of that on Saturday that is not snow...

So stoked gonna be out there in 16 days and hopefully be shredding the gnat and the parks so tell me how it is so happy updates people see you out here

I organized my company's ski trip back in august for this weekend hoping there would be nice storm...i guess it kinda worked out.

Ill be skiing northstar, unfortunatly, on saturday, but i dont think anyone is gonna want to ski on sunday(gapers), so anyone that came up in my car(only "snow-capable" car - 4Runner)is coming with me to Kwood.

Hopefully the whole top of the ridge is spackled with 4 feet and patrol kicks some ass and opens a bunch of stuff!

On the brightside i am going to be reunited with my old friends saturday at N*- my OG ARGs. I havent skied those babies in 3 years. I figured a super wet heavy day poking around in the trees would be an ideal time to bust em out again haha!

It's been POURING for the past 24 hours straight in south lake. so much rain. but.. snow levels are only about 800 feet higher than that so all the resorts are getting a lot of snow, especially up top. kirkwood was claiming 37" after three days as of last night. I bet they have at least another foot after last night.

It snowed 18 over night at kirkwood.

Watch the snow cam, it breaks the table. This is so fucking great for our base. BOOOYA.

Any idea when K wood will actually open the wall, or sunrise?

Im sure they will go out of their way to be vaginas wouldn't be surprised if those lifts don't run until Tues. And of course they'll keep them closed until 1130 so you have to line up for 2 hours to get one of the first chairs.

If tomorrow is going to be slammed with people and only cornice express is running I will pass.

You are such a fucking whiny punk, we just got the first big storm in almost two seasons, and all you are going to do is bitch about when someone is going to opens some certain chair...fuck off.

Come on man, if you have skiied Kirkwood before after a storm you know that its possible Sunrise and/or the Wall will be open at 9/10am tomorrow....or not until Wednesday. Disagree?

And their website is poor and hard to understand. Nor will they give anyone an indication of what lifts will open when.

Couple this with the fact everywhere else got serious rain and Kwood will be jammed with people who don't normally ski Kwood and its a legit question to ask.

If the Wall isn't open tomorrow you understand nearly all of the serious skiiers in the Tahoe area will be relying on one single chairlift?

They just got 60". Shit opens when it opens. I will agree about their website, but their are other resorts where "serious skiers" ski. Idk squaw comes to mind. You're just bitching for no reason, ride cornice, traverse further and further out, as it gets skied out. Ski wagon wheel and sentinel bowls, waist deep and quit whining. When they open chair 10 on Tuesday do the same. Get fresh idea for 2 days. Stop complaining about some bullshit and enjoy 60" of fresh.

Seriously. Any input from people who were up there today? I'm contemplating hopping in my car and driving up really early tomorrow by myself. I don't want to go if nothing is going to be open again.

went to northstar today cuz everywhere else was closed or too far of a drive. it sucked. they got like 3 feet but the snow was so slushy and heavy that it was almost impossible to ski what looked like awesome powder. not only was the snow super slow and sticky on my freshly waxed skis, but it was like a rain/snow mix coming down and not letting up.

it was a complete downpour even at the very top and it was still rain. after like 2 runs and 3 lift rides i was soaked to my core. had some beer in the lodge and called it a day. pretty miserable

finally Tahoe is getting snow and more importantly straight up liquid! It's been so dry there the fear of fires for the summer would be insane! keep doing dem dances!

kirkwood is reporting 50 inches in 24 hours, is this legit? being from massachusetts i cant even fathom that much snow in a day hahaha is this a normal occurrence for tahoe? how does one ski 4+ feet of snow that is crazy midgets will need a snorkel

It's legit, it snows harder in places in tahoe than anywhere else in the world. Harder than even mt baker at times.

Yes it was wet at northstar, only about half of the backside was snow that was falling, but then again they top out at 8600'.

To the above poster, don't come to kirkwood, I'll be skiing all of the fresh snow, you can't wait and be a bitch.

Tomorrow is going to be the best day of the season, at least at kirkwood.

I was on top of heavenly today digging out tamarack chair. I took some pics. I'll post 'em in a bit once I eat some dinner. There is a shit ton of snow up there. shit ton.

I'm from MA too. This is my 3rd season in Tahoe and while I've only seen it straight puke snow a few times, I've never seen it snow as hard as it can/does here. We picked up 38" in 24 hours at squaw, and about 20ish of that was in 12 hours. It dumped last night on upper mountain. Sucks the snow level is so high but at least alpine and upper mountain will pop off. This is just what we needed to fill the mountain in.

my manager sent me some pics from high camp at squaw. literally went from not being able to ski to what it should like this time of year. it'll be interesting to see what opens up tomorrow, but they were bombing all day up there.

I'll see ya Tuesday and Wednesday will drive down to Kwood those 2 days maybe Thurs too.

Its a gamble man I'm really not bitching. Im gonna go to Rose tomorrow. 2 lifts and should be nice up top. I don't have a pass and its gonna be 50 a day no matter what so I think I might get more bang for my buck up there tomorrow then 3 day K wood flex pass for rest of the week.

Got me a nice 15 dollar round of golf at Arrowcreek around 1pm too so 27 or maybe even 36 holes and keep my legs fresh for K wood after a 15 or so sick powder runs.

First runs of the year on the Wall will be a shame to miss though if its open tomorrow at Kwood.

Anyways everyone have fun and enjoy the powder.

Earlier on this thread I bitched about the need for the resorts to throw people a bone on daily lift tickets. They probably read this thread and listened to me. SO ITS GOOD TO COMPLAIN ON A FORUM READ BY THOUSANDS SOMETIMES THINGS GET DONE ABOUT IT!!! Complaining is good. Maybe Kwood will make their website less confusing going forward. The new tweak to the Kwood multi day passes that mean any day is flexible and can be used whenever is a great change and makes the 54 dollar a day price when you get 3+ days very reasonable. Good job Vail on that.

I can't even really describe what it is like to ski on a day like that with some 120+ underfoot skis, all I can say is as close to flying and heaven that I have ever been, and will ever be. It's kinda like total happiness.

Well I'm going to pass on tomorrow and try to head up later in the week when I have someone to drive there/back with. I hope this is a good decision.

Only if they open runs steep enough to keep your momentum. I've skied there plenty of times in similar conditions and nothing was open except red dog and Squaw Creek. Except nothing on Red Dog or Squaw Creek will won't be open save the groomer.

For your sake, I hope I'm wrong and you post back in here with an epic picture that'll make me bite my tongue.

The snow mammoth is getting is super wet and heavy. should give us a solid base for awhile. Now we just need some pow

this was taken sunday afternoon. all the snow you see here (i'm standing on 4 feet of it taking the picture) all fell or was blown there in 24 hours. this entire area was snowblowed/shoveled saturday afternoon. note the metal barricades and the railing outside the shack on the right of the picture.

here it is after a little digging out looking back the other way towards where I took the first picture. you can see the wall of snow in the background just beyond the snowblower and also the shack railing from the other side.

All the snow is extremely heavy and wet. I was only sinking up my knees at most in the steeper untouched areas. it's offical.. we have a dank base. now lets get some fluffy stuff!

Tomorrow going to be the day at Kwood?

Did the Wall run today? Im not even going to expect the backside tomorrow but that would be nice.

Rose was sweet save for the fact that it was tracked out by 1015. But non the less a fun day and snow wasn't so wet you couldn't get back to the lift.

wet, heavy, dense. we have a solid foundation for the rest of the season. we can finally use the lighter snow to it's full potential. booooyah!

pretty much this.

Skied some of the goods right off of 6. When a light and dry storm comes (maybe this weekend already!) we'll actually be able to ski on it.

My how things change over a couple of days.

I

basically went heli skiing at kwood today. I skied 7 untouched lines that got as rowdy as i could handle.

I also almost passed out from dehydration after hiking for all those turns in 40 degree sunshine without ever going for a water break at my car.

I got first tracks, and got fucking rad out past sentinel, Once, and Wagon wheel bowlish area. Heavy snow, but damn soft and oh so fucking fun!

Im losing patience with the Kwood website. What is this pile of shit supposed to mean?

Updated @1600: Weather Discussion: Snowfall totals for the "near Pineapple Express" storm series are in and they are impressive enough. In general, the upper slopes of the Sierra Ski Resorts received between 4-6ft or "Sierra cement" laying down a good base for the upper slopes. Luckily this wasn't a bonafide Pineapple Express and snow levels didn't get too high. This forecaster's definition of a true Pineapple Express is hard to get... I like to see a point where the temperature and dew point at San Francisco is the same as Honolulu. That truly proves there is a connection from there to here. During this past weekend the WSW'erly jet stream that set up started about 100-200 miles north of Hawaii, so it wasn't quite as warm as it could be if starting farther south. Anyway, that's an academic discussion for another day. What we got was a blessing and there can't be anyone in California complaining. The jet is still out there and is active, but it has lifted northward in response to a ridge of high pressure pumping up some off the Central Coast. This morning's models lend confidence to the fact that the jet will probably stay too far north for any rain or snow of significance to make it down to Lake Tahoe through the end of the work week. The jet is forecast to drop southward over the weekend pushing a cold front down over NorCal late Saturday night. The support for the front is forecast to lift NE'ward though thus the front will likely weaken and only a short bout of light rain and snow is expected Sunday morning. Models look more promising for a colder storm expected through the middle of next week. It's only a 1-2 day storm though, but could be capable of dropping 1-2ft of "drier" snow across the Sierra, with snow levels dropping to 3000ft for the tail end of the storm.

Anyone understand that shit?

No mention of when certain chairlifts will spin for the first time this year. None. Not like anyone wants to read abotu that and not some bozo going off on a tangent about storms.

when they know when the chairs will run I'm sure they will let people know. it's not like they are out to get you dude. 8 feet fell in the past 7 days at kirkwood. heavy fucking snow. cats can't get right next to chairlifts, that shit needs to get dug out by hand. chairs that haven't spun yet this year are fucking coated in heavy ice and need to be inspected and serviced. there is a lot of work that needs to be done and honestly the only day that it hasn't been snowing/windy for them to work on the lifts was yesterday. cut them a fucking break. geez.
