Helpful skiing tips that you may not know...

And my contribution is, most of your body heat is lost through your head.

So on cold days put a beanie under your helmet and if you can ( you will look stupid) but put your hood over your hat/helmet and you will saty a heck of alot warmer.

This thread helps thanks! use suspenders they help soo much!!!!! i had to figure out how to tie them on i just used shoelaces.

if your skis get bent the company will often times replace them but only the first season so be on top of whats happening to your skiis i had t-halls they bent in like 5 months im not fat either like 175

Depends on the model I guess. I personally disagree. I have pushed the JJ's so hard on big mountain these days... If the cores sucked, I would of found out already.

Alright, that makes sense. I was doing a skinny chute where all my weight were on the tips and ends of my skis and I was doing hop turns with my skis flexing and without having the part under my boot touching the snow. I eventually straight-lined the rest but I'm quite glad the cores held out.

Nice find. Even if you don't loose that much heat through your head it's still nice to wear a hat under the helmet. I have a super thin gore-tex cap that looks like a thick swimming cap. Not very fashionable but when placed under the helmet, it keeps your head warmer by dealing with sweat properly and some insulation.
Another tip: even though you might go to a boot fitter when you initially buy your boots, through wearing them and over time, your boot might not fit quite the same. Make sure you test and adjust your boots periodically to fit properly. Also, don't just assume that because it fits one foot it will fit the exact same on the other foot. Most of the time, people's two feet aren't quite the same. Adjust your boots by the feel and flex, those should feel the same. Not necessarily how they are buckled.

read the whole experiment they "bust' the myth with an experiment where subject are exposed to cold and wear only swimming trunks; only 10%of their boddy heat was lost through their head.Myth busted? I don't think so!
If you are skiing around, wearing a warm jacket, warm pants, warm boots, etc.almost none of your bodyheat will be lost through your body, because it's so well insulated. If you then proceed to go out skiing with nothing on your head and your head all exposed; you will lose most bodyheat through your head; simply because it's the only region were bodyheat can be lost...
i can't find the other experiment, but it was a similar one where they would put test subjects in sleeping bags, exposed to extreme cold with only their face free. Then they measured the heat loss for the body; it was almost 0 because the sleeping bags insulated so well... (they do several spot measurements on the sleeping bag; calculate heat loss/in² or heat loss/cm² and then extrapolate that heat loss to the whole surface of the sleeping bag)
I don't have any exact numbers anymore of the experiment but i tought that loss of body heat through the face was somewhere around 80!!!% of the total body heat loss....
So as far as i'm concerned the "myth" or "theory" is still standing and this scientific research has only proven the obvious and taken the real meaning of the myth out of context...

Sparknotes: Most bodyheat will still be lost through your head, as long as the rest of your body is properly insulated...
Sparknotes²: scientific experiment was done on people in swimming trunks, exposed to cold; ofcourse most heat will dissipate through your body; but if your body is properly insulated most heat will still dissipate through your head, simply because its the worst isolated ....
Imho this scientific "study" is a great example of drawing the wrong conclusions of your test-measurements and incorrect extrapolation of the results.

i dont know if anyone has said this but heres something i learned a couple weeks ago-

some mountains will give out free hot chocolate coupons like ambassadors for that mountain will sometimes hand them out and give them away to people. if you ever get one of these dont fill it up with hot chocolate! instead when no one is looking fill it up with a burger fries snacks or basically anything that you can cram into that hot chocolate. then walk by the register simply hand the coupon to the cashier and voilla you have a free meal or at least got a free burger out of it, cus we all know how damn expensive ski lodge food is

you can also do the same without coupon...
get a burger(or anything else) and pay for hot chocolate

This for sure, when I'm on the lift skiing by myself you meet all kinds of awesome people. Sometimes I find someone ski with them for a bit and then go back on my own, makes a solo day Amazing.

Wait Rogge, you can get karma outside of ns? Maybe other places besides NJ you'll meet cool people, I've only met cool guys in CO. Here I only get the random person's "So you gonna hit the jump?" I'll try on Saturday.

I've always found that you lose a decent amount of heat through your neck, I'm gonna start wearing something around mine. My jacket makes it worse too, it has a neck cover thing, but your neck's diameter would have to be double that of a normal human for it to be efficient. Wind get's in it and it's not fun.

Putting your hand in a fist in your glove is bad, I tried when I was at creek last week and the finger part of the glove got cold like everybody said. Putting an ungloved hand on your neck will warm it rather well, but unless you put your glove somewhere warm it'll get cold.

Somebody said it before, but if your hand goes in the glove cold it may never warm up.

Dress socks may be great for skiing, they're so thin but I've never tried. Anybody care to weigh in here?

Also, I never stretch, I'm gonna try. I never stretch before soccer and everybody else does and they still get hurt or pull something. Touching my toes is hardly a stretch, but for some of these kids it's nearly impossible. Skiers have more durable bodies than others through evolution?

Does the thing where you swing your arms in order to get more blood in your fingers really work? It makes my fingers tingle sometimes.

i ski with cotton because its around. Cotton is cheap. you dont have to have 'proper tech' to ski like a beast, that actually takes balls. something you cant just outfit yourself with.

-try talking to people on lifts-put your hands under your armpits to warm them up-STRETCH!!!-when you feel that tingling feeling in your hands, that is blood being pushed to your hands, and I do it, it usually helps me warm up.

Here are some tips for clean mogul skiing from the Colorado Ski Authority website.

One of the keys to skiing moguls cleanly is separating the

movements of the upper and lower body. You should try to keep your upper body

as calm and still as possible. The benefits of this are functional and

aesthetic.

Here is a couple of technique flaws that are common in

moguls skiers;

The head bob - Sometimes it's just a head bob, sometimes it

looks like a skier is using their entire upper body to absorb a mogul;

collapsing at the waste, sometimes actively banding down with their torse.

The chicken Wing - when a skier raises their elbow to the

side, usually keeping their fist in front of them. You could call it s swimming

motion with the elbow perhaps.

Some people are guilty of the opposite arm motion as the

chicken wing. This means that they keep their elbows close to their body, but

throw their hands out to the side to make their poles plants... a little bit like as if you were hailing a cab in San Francisco.

Most skiers don't notice that they are doing any of this

stuff until they are told so, or they see it on video. Even if they are told,

it usually doesn't click into their mind until they see it for themselves on

video. It's unbelievably hard to cure some of these bad habits. Just keep

working at it and keep it in the front of your mind for a while. Having a clean

upper body has a huge effect on the appearance of your mogul skiing. As I

mention above, it also effects your ability to ski moguls.

If you need to bob your head or throw your arm to the side

every time that you make a turn, you will quickly find a limit to how fast you can ski moguls.

If your upper body motion is limited,

you will be able to ski through moguls much faster.

Some more mogul tips off the top of my head...

Skiing "Heavy on the front sides" is terrible for your back and terrible for your knees. This means slamming into the front side of moguls and using this impact to slow you down. You should be carving down the backsides of moguls to control speed. Your absorbtion should be active... don't wait until you get to a mogul to begin your absorbtion, this will be too late and will result in high impact skiing.

Ill take that as true, In NY its illegal barefoot but ski-boots arnt. Im sure you could get like wreckless driving or something for being an idiot an wearing skiboots

well in suffolk my dumb ass got pulled over on the way home from the beach and If I didnt have a PBA card i would've got a ticket for something along the lines of not being able to control my vehicle. I was speeding btw I didnt get pulled over for being barefoot

Need some help.didnt check the searchbar OOps

okay so ive had my outerwear for one season already. Love it to death except one minor problem. I have only one zipper on my jacket (except pit zips) and I pull it all the way up to my face. My pants dont have and zippers except the one on my ankle. I really dont have a place to put ski Passes. I usually put them on the ankle pocket but now that everyone is scanning tickets idk what to do Its a hassle to pick one leg up and have the liftee go down and scan. Im going to killington this weekend and would like some help +kk for help thanks

If you're skiing in the backcountry at all make sure someone in your party brings a basic first aid kit (they sell small ones that are light and easily fit in a pack.) I had an incident where a small sliced open cut almost turned into a big problem.

That's in addition to the obvious shovel+beacons+probes and not to mention proper training.

Love this thread, keep it going.

I always carry a little first aid kit with me. Sometimes I'll be in sone glades and cut my face on a branch. Its nice to be able to deal with it right there, rather than skiing down the mountain bleeding on my outerwear

I just wear a lace around my neck with a whistle and my pass. Simple. You unzip your jacket and pull out your pass. Just dont forget it.

Sometimes I'll just put my pass in my pocket, like if its a spring day and all I'm wearin is a tall T I'll just pull it out when/if they ask

He's right tho. I just ski naked. Fight the power! You dont even need skis. It takes real balls to straight line a dub diamond with bare feet

heres a good one for people who slide ALOT of rails.
try switching your skis onto the opposite foot every once and a while. it will help reduce edge damage.

finally did this for the first time. this is the greatest tip in the history of history. my boots have never felt better.
