Here are some tips for clean mogul skiing from the
Colorado Ski Authority website.
One of the keys to skiing moguls cleanly is separating the
movements of the upper and lower body. You should try to keep your upper body
as calm and still as possible. The benefits of this are functional and
aesthetic.
Here is a couple of technique flaws that are common in
moguls skiers;
The head bob - Sometimes it's just a head bob, sometimes it
looks like a skier is using their entire upper body to absorb a mogul;
collapsing at the waste, sometimes actively banding down with their torse.
The chicken Wing - when a skier raises their elbow to the
side, usually keeping their fist in front of them. You could call it s swimming
motion with the elbow perhaps.
Some people are guilty of the opposite arm motion as the
chicken wing. This means that they keep their elbows close to their body, but
throw their hands out to the side to make their poles plants... a little bit like as if you were hailing a cab in San Francisco.
Most skiers don't notice that they are doing any of this
stuff until they are told so, or they see it on video. Even if they are told,
it usually doesn't click into their mind until they see it for themselves on
video. It's unbelievably hard to cure some of these bad habits. Just keep
working at it and keep it in the front of your mind for a while. Having a clean
upper body has a huge effect on the appearance of your mogul skiing. As I
mention above, it also effects your ability to ski moguls.
If you need to bob your head or throw your arm to the side
every time that you make a turn, you will quickly find a limit to how fast you can ski moguls.
If your upper body motion is limited,
you will be able to ski through moguls much faster.
