Has rap taken a turn for the worst?

Yeah the one party this school year so far consisted of the shitty ass party/ rave songs with everyone chanting the annoying phrases all at once like "GETTIN TURNT!!" and that type of bullshit. Luckily my friend and I didnt drink so we left.

Haha never been to a party because I live in Alaska and they're usually bonfires with a bunch of drunk hicks shooting guns and rolling coal

I think all modern popular rap sucks so much dick like drake tyga wiz kalifa ect that is nothin gbut garbage how ever rappers like j cole, mick jenkins, chance the rapper, and kendrik and mac are good not great they used to be its like going to a shit thrift store you have to go through so much shit garbage to find good stuff

In my opinion rap is slowly making a comeback. Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah, Earl Sweatshirt, Shabazz Palaces, Websterx, MF Doom, Pro Era... there still are many out there being creative, even though they aren't very popular.

In my opinion ghost definitely isn't what he used to be

I completely agree 2015 has been an amazing year for rap, so many great albums. Like Dr Dre put something out this year, lol if that doesnt mean rap is making a comeback i dont know what does

Idk. There's some more "mainstream" that's still okay. I'm saying like gambino and asap and such. Also chance is pretty good.

The chronic 2001 was arguably the last good rap Album ever made. Along with a few exceptions. But totally on point.

Great album, totally agree. Ironically not from 2001. The Chronic 2001 dropped in 1999.

I might catch some hate for this... but the Ludacris, Word of Mouf album might be the best drop from 2001.

Here's a list of the others albums from 2001:

1. Jay-Z - The Blueprint

2. Nas - Stillmatic

3. 2Pac - Until the End of Time

4. Wu-Tang Clan - Iron Flag

5. Ludacris - Word of Mouf

6. Cormega - The Realness

7. Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 1

8. D12 - Devil's Night

9. Jay-Z - MTV Unplugged

10. Fabolous - Ghetto Fabolous

Just to name a few... Discuss?

Wow what a bunch of pretentious try hards

you realize that you are comparing the best music of that era to all the music of today and expecting it all to be just as good. I'm sure there was a bunch of shit rap back then too, you just don't hear it because only the good stuff keeps gettingn played

and lol at you guys all bringing up such shit artists like lil Wayne to try and make your point

The rap snob who only listens to old stuff is the worst. Yeah we get it, you have the internet and learned how to use it too. There are plenty of good rappers out right now, you just have to look a little harder than what's right in front of your face...

There was a time that Lil Wayne wasn't a shit rapper.... Back when he was a Hot Boy and dropped the first couple of Carters.

There was most certainly some shit rappers back in the day. That fact is that your statement is undeniable. However, the majority of rappers back in the day didn't sound like they had peanut butter stuck to the roof of their mouths.

Please list 10 albums from this year that rival my list from 2001.

1. A$AP Rocky - At Long Last A$AP

2. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

3. Dr. Dre - Compton

4. Travis $cott - Rodeo

5. Action Bronson - Mr. Wonderful

6. Tyler the Creator - Cherry Bomb

7. Lupe Fiasco - Tetsuo & Youth

8. King Los - God, Money, War

9. Joey Bada$$ - B4.DA.$$

10. J. Cole - Forrest Hills Drive (December 2014, close enough)

And 2015 isn't even over yet. This list can be debatable though, some people obviously don't like Travis or Tyler but they both have a booming career ahead of them. We may one day look back on these albums the same way we do at the ones you listed.

If you want to talk about 2014, well:

1. Vibes - Theophilus London

2. GIRL - Pharrell

3. Z - SZA

4. DeadBoy - Bones

5. Cilvia Demo - Isaiah Rashad

6. Travis $cott - Days Before Rodeo

7. Schoolboy Q - Oxymoron

8. Flying Lotus - You're Dead!

9. Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 2

10. Mac Miller - Faces

These aren't perfect lists, just off the top of my mind. In no way am I saying that they top the albums you listed though, they just contend. Early 2000s rap will always have a special place in my heart.

I hate when people comment: "Future sucks, Pac is way better" or something along those lines. Today's rap scene has a completely different style than that of the 90s

No it hasn't, Rolling Paper 2 is going to be fire. A.L.L.A. was best rap album of 2k15. High hopes for logics album The Incredible True Story. Kendrick and JCole collab can't go wrong.

Long Live Asap, Good Kid Maad City, Doris, IndiCud, Yeezus and Magna Carta all dropped around the same time. Then once "Thats that shit I dont like" by chief keef came out the game changed big time.

This can be generalized about any genre of music. However, it is what is perceived as mainstream that I think people acquire these biases. For example, mainstream music in the 60s and 70's was pretty awesome and revolutionary in m eyes. Music in the 21st century is still awesome it just seems that the mainstream music is shit. For example, the radio can only play specific songs based on similarity. The similar the songs the more people conform to listen to that station and the more viewers they acquire. The rappers and artists that show skill and are on another level are usually not mainstream and are not played on the radio. There's good and bad rappers/music everywhere, it's just the mediums that play the music, which often distorts logic and promotes generalizations.

I think of it this way.

metal was once very popular in the mainstream. then hair/glam metal came along and ruined it. metal wasn't cool after that. it got old, fat, and moved underground where only "core" fans know or give a shit about it.

Agreed. Zeppelin to Poison is like Biggie to Drake.

the dude who produces for travis scott is a wizard, aside from that montana of 300 is dope, and i guess i still fuck with some wayne but.... ya trap is 100% reverb autotune and beat and 0% lyrics

Listen to real underground. Flatbush doesn't count. Theres a lot of good creative rap getting put out, its just more spread out. In fact I'd say that the rap game has taken a massive turn for the better, with the rise of EDM and tons of talented white boys having a chance to be a part of hip-hop, good production is an exclusive rarity to an artist with a label deal. Any kid with a $75 dollar mic and some beats can put together an EP that sounds just as good (from an audio fidelity standpoint) as anything you could hear anywhere in 2002.

And while most of what gets put out by random kids is total crap, a lot of great stuff gets put out too. The sheer volume of fire mixtapes is overwhelming, but if you're willing to sift through it you can find a niche in hip-hop you love.

And I'd say that was barely even possible 10 years ago.

You're limiting yourself by not looking hard enough.

now here's some dank underground you probably haven't ever heard, and even if you don't like any of this specifically, there's literally thousands of rappers putting out tracks with good beats, with a huge difference in styles. You can find any rap you want to hear.

That's just the name that they went under when they toured with Flatbush Zombies in Europe. Flatbush Zombies haven't put anything out since earlier this past summer.

There is plenty of great new rap music out there. Stop trying to ask others whats "good" or not. Listen what you enjoy and fuck everyone else. Music is interpreted by everyone differently.

Shoutout $uicideboy$, Chris Travis, Denzel Curry, and Bones. Thats who I'm into.
