Has rap taken a turn for the worst?

If you say all rap today is garbage, you aren't looking hard enough. There are more rappers than ever, and there are some great ones.

Joey Bada$$ is one of the greatest of all time IMO

some other rappers that focus and lyricism and aren't trash:

PRO ERA, if you're not following Pro Era, that may be why you think today's hip hop is trash. Some members are: Joey Bada$$, Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution, A La $ol, Dessy Hinds, Dirty Sanchez, Chuck Strangers, and more. Watch these for proof of talent:

Underachievers

Mick Jenkins (didn't see him in this thread and have no idea how)

today's rap is not trash, you're following mainstream music which is always trash.

Great album, totally agree. Ironically not from 2001. The Chronic 2001 dropped in 1999.

I might catch some hate for this... but the Ludacris, Word of Mouf album might be the best drop from 2001.

Here's a list of the others albums from 2001:

1. Jay-Z - The Blueprint

2. Nas - Stillmatic

3. 2Pac - Until the End of Time

4. Wu-Tang Clan - Iron Flag

5. Ludacris - Word of Mouf

6. Cormega - The Realness

7. Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 1

8. D12 - Devil's Night

9. Jay-Z - MTV Unplugged

10. Fabolous - Ghetto Fabolous

Just to name a few... Discuss?

Jay-Z's trash. Easily the most overrated rapper of all time, also i really like stillmatic and rev. vol. 1.

There's some really good rappers that aren't popular that I really like, mick Jenkins is decently known but his shit is really good. Also check out Night Lovell, his music is really tight and he's from my hometown

This is rare picture of man dicovering fire.

I actually really happen to like Kendrick and respect the work and lyricism he has put into his albums. with that being said, this debate is always frustrating cause there's always great stuff out there but people are just too lazy to look for it. Now with soundcloud existing there are soooo many underground artists able to get their sound out and people just aren't listening cause you might have to dig a little to find them.

On a side note, if you were a fan of madvilliany, Madlib is dropping a new project on the 30th with MED & Blu (some underground LA artists) that sounds very promising from what was prereleased on soundcloud.
