Greeks of NS

I joined SigEp in college and it was a great experience. I made a great group of friends who I am still in contact with on a weekly basis. Joining a greek organization introduced me to so many people that I would have otherwise never met. It also gave me much needed accountability when it came to doing well in school and tons of opportunities to participate in campus activities. I met my wife because I joined a greek house.

That said, it isn't for everyone. I also made great friends outside the frat who would never join and that's fine. It's really a shame that so many of you judge it so harshly while clearly having no experience with it. If you gave it a shot and didn't like it, cool. Go do you own thing. Just don't assume I'm a douchebag because I made a different choice. If you are in college, I'd recommend at least considering it. That said, dont EVER put up with hazing. If you aren't comfortable in a situation, get out of there and report it. That is serious shit and people that think abusing you is fun are not your friends. /PSA.

I don't know where you got this figure, but it was about a grand for me.

I know for a fact it is $3000 or more a semester. I have many friends in various fraternities and sororities.

What does this 3k-4k cover? Rent? Food? Don't know?

Dues aren't the same at every school, and in many places wheres dues are that expensive you live in a large mansion and that's covering your dues, rent, food and beverages.

Grow up, you're old enough to not blindly hate based on stereotypes.

What your dues cover really depend on your chapter. I pay my nationals fees, then housing, food, stuff for events, they provide us with beds. A safe space, money for the chapter. It all goes towards something the house & members use and need.

Also please note dues aren't alwyas that high. If you are a housed chapter you're gonna pay more. I payed $900 my first semester, and because I live out of house, $400 this one.

yep, my school didnt have on campus fraternity houses, so i only payed about 300 a semester for dues.

people who are arguing that they dont want to pay for friends need to realize that at schools with high dues, the dues cover housing and ususally food too. some of these frats around the country have absurd houses too

Our dues were around $400/semester live in or out. and were low because we funded our booze fund off the books. why would yours be different? dues are for house activities, not just live-in activities, right?

The real question is: why the fuck is sorority food so much better than fraternity food? so, so, so much better?

Grow up? Hah. I did the college thing and grew up in a college town, i'd say I'm allowed to hate it if I want.

It breeds a false sense of camaraderie. Sort of like how in high school the vast majority of friend groups stem from the fact that you are forced to see them every day so you might as well get along, same goes with Greek life. Maybe I'm just an anti-social cunt but I like making friends based off of things other than a few letters of a dead alphabet and paying large sums money to live in a house together. Most of the people I know who joined frats and sororities were the same people in high school who did everything they could to be noticed. It just seems like a desperate plea for attention and wanting to belong for those who aren't unique enough to find their own friends. Granted there are a few exceptions to this, but well over 80% of the people I know who join Greek life are shallow and vapid and not people I enjoy spending time with.

I will just agree to disagree. While I wasn't friend a with everyone in my fraternity, I did become insanely close friends with 10 or so. Your school must have just had a shitty greek system. Every school has that one fraternity or sorority that thinks they're all high and mighty, but such is life. If you're joining to think you're better than someone else, you're doing it wrong. I've never experienced the sense of brotherhood more (besides with my real brother) than with my fraternity.

Knew a bunch of cool greeks, girls and dudes, and also knew a bunch of stereotypical gooners. Unfortunately if seemed to error on the side of racist assholes in my school's Greek system. Really depended on the house and the individual though. I was on a sports team so it was never something that personally interested me--my whole team was my "frat." That said, my older brother was Greek and I always had a good time visiting and hanging out with his Greek brothers.

Not saying that Greek people can't be cool. I have friends in frats and sororities, but collectively as a group I think they suck so hard.

my house bill is $3410 a semester. thats rent, 9 meals a week (plus breakfast food, and weekend stuff our cook leaves us), administrative fees , and utilities pus anything else I'm forgetting. Dorms here are around 4000 a semester. (am I paying less for friends???) Not a bad deal really, I'm living in a freshly remodeled house thats 5 min from anywhere on campus.

Its different at every school though. Here the greek system is a much larger social and campus involvement scene than the dorms.

I am a Sigma Chi and its honestly the greatest time of my life. Your house shouldn't be about how much it costs or the fact that you're "paying for friends" its an incredible community to be apart of and I will always value the memories I've made here

There’s some nice people in the Greek community but the majority of them are egotistical, incorrigible, buff, cadmium yellow, weight lifting tools, who invite heaps of sandy STD ridden blondes to their parties. If that’s what your into then go for it.

For all you chodes that believe being apart of greek life will land you a job because of "networking", you are sorely mistaken.

You know what lands you a job? Hard work and experience. Nothing is going to be handed to you, no matter how much you pay a semester.

Greek life is another outlet for you kids to take an identity in. Whether it's skiing, frats, significant others, etc.

My only advise is don't waste your time building who are around something that will only be relevant for 4 years out of your life.

/Rant

mine is only 600 dollars a semester. I live in the house so 250 is added each month. I've never heard of a house charging anything more than 2500

Not really true. Frat networking will help you to land your first job. After that, it is all about your performance like you said.

Curiously, why do you feel so strongly about this. You write with intensity haha.

I assume you've landed your career by Greek networking? Or is this what your brothers told you?

Frat networking might land you an interview at most. But if you can't perform on paper, you're out.

I have a fair amount of disillusion friends still in fraternities under that same mindset.

I've graduated college. I've landed my dream job. The real world isn't a bunch of bros in chubbies high fiving and throwing paychecks at each other.

On the flip side, I also have hugely successful friends who were in fraternities that did not leverage their "frat network" to get where they are today.

If you view a frat as a networking opportunity to open a door and NOTHING else, than you have a competitive edge and the right mindset.

If you think you'll be landing a job by delivering a 3+ GPA and a frat secrete handshake, you are mistaken.

I like hard work. I like seeing people succeed from hard work. Don't be an entitled doucher, and we're kosher.

so frat kids can't get good grades and land jobs on their own? i see what you are saying but i don't know many people just sitting around waiting for an alum to come to the house with a job offer. I do know a kid that landed an interview cuz 2 of his brothers had done well at a company and they recommended him. he got the job cuz he had experience and had worked hard. I also know lots of kids involved in clubs because member older members promote the clubs to younger guys trying to get... wait for it... experience.

well im not angry, but i know for a fact that people in fraternities are GENERALLY self entitled, privileged, knobs. Reference: I know them first hand.

funny, cause that was not my impression at all.

But hey, since it's a FACT, you must have visited the vast majority of college campuses across america, right?

Oh, whats that? you have only been to a handful of college campuses, and known dudes from a handfull of frats at each campus. But, don't worry, i totally think you have enough experience to conclude factually based upon your vast experience on the subject.

I like to associate "Greeks" with people from Greece instead of people who lack friends and drink far too much natty ice, bump shitty music, and do weird stuff with their bros.
