Bottom line, I have a very bad perception of Greeks, but I have solid reasoning for having it.
tl;dr: Greeks are douches that think way too highly of themselves.
If I lived in a house like that I would act like the most terrible person in the world. It would be awesome though "Roll Tide".

In general I would say that most people are likable, decent people but the Greek system isn't always an accurate representation of the general population. Shitty people can congregate in any facet of life, just it seems more often that it happens in fraternities and sororities. Of course this is just my opinion, but you can't ignore an observable trend that just about everyone is aware of either. Obviously not all frats are filled with shitty unsuccessful people prolonging their high school glory days, but the flip side is also untrue. Not every frat guy is an upstanding person that cares about their community and loves doing community service like they so often like to portray themselves to be.
TLDR; Generalizations either way are bad, Greek life is much more complex than labeling it good or bad.

College students aren't an accurate representation of the general population either. And the observable trend you speak of is an observable trend in media coverage; news outlets report on negative events in the Greek system, but reports are often sensationalized and sometimes completely ignore factual evidence (like Rolling Stone). To say that there is a trend of negative events in the Greek system seems like a premature conclusion, considering that the outlets describing the Greek System generally only report on the detrimental stories.13400650:K-Dot said:

True, the media does like to highlight and capitalize on the negative sides of Greek life which does sometimes give them an unfair reputation. I wasn't basing my opinion off of how they are portrayed, more just my own experiences in college with them. It isn't exactly measurable but I feel like most people around me don't think too highly of Greek life. If this opinion held by most people actually is unreasonable is up to you to decide, but it exists for some reason or another at the end of the day.

I go to a big school where greek life is huge. A lot of the frat bros I know are nice individuals and I like them on their own. They just become complete fuckers as a group almost anywhere.

I'm a Sigma Nu at the university of Utah. I love it and couldn't really picture my self doing anything else. Our greek system is pretty close knit here. Utah has kinda a weird campus 3/4 of it is commuting mormons who aren't very social on campus. Then there is the other 1/4 who are very close (greeks, athletes, and normal cool people.) I never actually thought that i would join a fraternity but i'm very happy with my choice the guys i have met are my second family. People say that we pay for our friends but i disagree and say we pay for a place to rage and a place hang out also booze. Half of my friends are GID's so i don't really understand some peoples hate toward the system and especially recently.

I'm in a fraternity and there are moments when I really regret joining. Everything you hear about fraternities is half of the truth -- be it good or bad. Fraternity members tell the good side and leave out the bad; critics of the system do the opposite. The good things that I found in fraternity life could have just as well been found in a normal group of friends. The bad things seem to be exclusive to fraternity life -- or at least the kinds of people you find there. Luckily, I go to a school with generally intelligent students, so the bad sides of fraternity life are mitigated by common sense and decency. But I still catch a glimpse of the sexism, racism, and other shit from time to time. Unfortunately, all of the friends I made freshman year joined houses, so I didn't have much of a choice. I could have just gone my own way, made new friends during sophomore year, but I didn't want to feel lonely as fuck all over again like I did at the beginning of my freshman year. Of course, I hardly found any genuine connections with people in my fraternity, but hey, at least there's ample opportunity to get hammered and forget about it. I'm not certain I would enjoy school more if I wasn't in a fraternity, but I think I would enjoy it more if they didn't exist at all.

im not a member of the greek system because the greek system is crap at my school. but ill never understand why people say you pay for friends, its a club and communal living you gotta pay to be in a club and live in a house together, and thesides its not like they just let everyone in.

it is hugely school dependent, and most of the time, a school will have a few fraternities that are the stereotypical douchers. but believe me, if it's something you're interested in, and you don't go to a super small school, there is a group of guys that are just like you out there
