Freed "POW" Bowe Bergdahl, traitor

Oh and there's this, which is interesting....

Bowe Bergdahl's father, Bob Bergdahl enjoys sympathizing with Gitmo detainees and reciting the Koran at the White House.

And speaking such lovely words of Arabic, "In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful"

Thoughts?

Lets blame Obama for every little thing we don't like!!! Fuck off, deserter or not, no man is left behind. What kind of military would we be if we just left our troops be locked up because they did something wrong? What would you tell his parents?

I would tell his parents that their son is a deserter.

Obama initiated the exchange by getting into contact with the Emir of Qatar. And then used the occasion for a photo op on Saturday. I guess he didn't realize that the Muslim sympathizing dad would start reciting the Koran.

That's a terrible attitude to have. And it shouldn't matter that his father is a Muslim. The fact is the minute we start going against our number 1 motto/creed, we lose all credibility. Deserter or not this man deserved to come home. Deal with it.

You are an idiot.

Trading those terrorists puts U.S. soldiers at risk. He is already responsible for the death of 6 servicemen who died searching for him. After his defection there were an increased number of attacks on his base.

He is a deserter and a traitor, he deserves nothing better than death if these allegations prove to be true (which I believe they will be).

Well let's wait and see then before you jump to anymore conclusions. Traitor? Get fucking real. He had the balls to enlist and serve over seas. Have you served? Doubt it. It's easy to make assumptions when you are sitting nice and safe at home.

1) Desertion is not at all the same as treason. youre fucking stupid and listen to too much right wing rhetorical diarhea.

2)you think you know more about this situation than the POTUS? are you that fucking delusional?

3)The 5 prisoners we gave back- im guessing you think they will pick up right where they left off, right? Cause i mean, they havnet been completely isolated with no knowledge of what has gone on in the world for the last 10 years, their positions havent been filled many times over, the organizations they belong to totally still exist, and the US govt isnt at all good at interogation/brainwashing/mindfucking.

4)Goddamn youre stupid, and easily mislead.

1. I never wrote treason, although it is possible he is guilty of that too if he gave information that put American servicemen in danger. If he defected to the Taliban that is treason, his fellow soldiers that served on the same base know him as a deserter and have been calling him out as such.

2. If you think the delusional president knows more about the situation then the men who served with Bergdahl then it is you who is in fact delusional. The last five years have proven that the president doesn't seem to be aware of much. He found a political photo op with Bergdahl to try and cover his fuck ups, but didn't bother do his research beforehand. I mean this is the same president who claims that a lot of news gets to him by way of the major news channels. This list goes on for a while.

3. These were high-level targets (governors and high ranking members in the Taliban), and yes they will pick up right where they left off, and will probably be welcomed back with full honors back into the Taliban. The Taliban do still exist and it is still a very viable political force, or are you that dumb? Yea I'm sure all that tame "mindfucking" at Gitmo will just cause them to go back and become peaceful hermits, get real.

4. First rule of calling someone stupid, get your grammar and spelling correct when you do it, otherwise you risk looking like even more of an idiot. (You're and misled if you will)

My dad is Obama and I know more about politics than any of you!

Also my internet penis' girth is triple OP's

God damnit dude lay off on this shit, you're so fucking bitter about something that doesn't even effect you. Don't just pick up every fucking news headline and blame it on obama because your right wing parents told you he's bad.

But really, shut the fuck up about obama. I hate people like you who just blame the president.

Everything i said went over youre head.

1. Traitor. So i guess you think concientious objectors are traitors too, huh? When you are in war and see some shit, it can cause you to question your govts motives. Dude didnt like what he saw and walked away. deserter? absolutely. traitor, no.

2. Yeah, i think obama would know better than the average GI what intel value certain gitmo prisoners, and POW would possess. pretty fucking obvious.

3. yes because the taliban is one organized group lol. you are so damn ignorant to the political situation over there. The taliban is comprised of a bunch of tribes and factions all waring with each other. More than likely, the tribe these guys were once head of has diesd/merged/been taken over.

You seriously underestimate what 10 straight years of physchological torture will do to you. Try and think a bit, the interogations arent exactly like you see on Law & Order haha.

4. First rule of the internet- when in an argument pick out proper grammatical and spelling "mistakes" from someones internet slang to cover up the fact that you have very weak comebacks. If you cant win the war, just try and win the small battle, right? haha

So five men deserved to die (possibly 6 they're saying now) rescuing this one deserter? I always have to remember that you're a freshman in high school to try to not get too blown away by your stupidity.

Plus the fact that you think we should let one of our own soldiers rot away in an Afghan prison because he deserted for reasons still unknown just shows me how ignorant you are about our military's procedures and quite potentially war in general.

You think I'm in high school yet you are the one resorting to personal attacks. Laughable.

Well if you had any reading comprehension skill whatsoever you would have recognized that the "high school" but was in your defense, not an attack. 2-0.

1. Form your thoughts and proof read so people can understand what you are trying to say.

2. I'm not in high school.

3. Clearly you have limited reading comprehension skills for thinking at any of my posts indicated that I thought the 5-6 soldiers that went to rescue him deserved to die.

4. I think you would make more sense talking about the current warm front we are facing the discussing this issue.

Jesus...calling someone a traitor would imply that they were found guilty of treason. Since he hasn't yet (though there is a strong chance he will) anyone calling him a traitor sounds foolish and mislead and clearly doesn't have a basic grasp on the English language.

I believe everyone has a right to a fair trial, military or not. Why is that so bad? Like mentioned above, deserting and being a traitor are two totally different things. And the men that died? They knew what they were doing. They knew that you NEVER leave someone behind, regardless of what he/she did. If Obama had left him over there to rot you would be ignorant to say that just as many people would have gotten angry/offended by leaving one of our own soldiers in an Afghan prison to die.

I don't think deserting is right, actually quite the opposite. But we don't know the full story and I see too many people jumping to conclusions in this thread before the truth has come out. It's disappointing.

see that's what you and OP aren't understanding about this for the sake of beating the partisan drum. it's not up to you or the officals getting him back to decide whether or not he deserves to be retrieved, it is simply a credo/protocol of the US military to not leave people behind.

i can guarantee you wouldn't be supporting an individual exception to that rule if not for the circumstances of this story. if this was some guy with a different ideology and (somehow, in fantasy land) the US gov had summarily decided he was not going to get taken out based on his details, most of you guys would be frothing at the mouth right now that we were leaving an american POW out on his own

if he gets back and isnt tried for what you think he should be tried for, great, then be pissed at the relevant people for that, and i very well might agree with you depending on what details come out (i have respect for conscientious objectors but in this case he allegedly fucked over his fellow soldiers). but to pretend like this is something to be pissed at the president for is so dumb (oh it's a publicity stunt? wow keen eye man, i bet youre the first to identify a PR move by a president). there are plenty of things to fault obama for but throwing a tantrum over this one just screams partisan attack dog.

he's an american POW, what's not to understand here?

i have a feeling this guy was more important than anyone is letting on. something seems fishy to me.

The US Army determined in 2010 that he walked away from his unit and no extraordinary efforts should be made to recover him.

A few of the members of his platoon said he was a deserter and it's claimed that 6 other soldiers lost their lives in the search for him.

These kids don't care. It's like ... Protocol and... Stuff

it's too bad you can't even argue like an adult and have to resort to ad hominem bullshit (and then going back on the high school comment about the one dude, wtf?) because there is definitely plenty of argument to be had on both sides of this story but you'd rather just ignore it when i actually try to respond to you

besides the 30 day notice to congress, what federal laws are being broken? (serious question, i'd like to hear a good answer. i along with many am a bit frightened by the power being wielded by the executive in the past couple presidencies). because i don't really think the "negotiating with terrorists" bit really holds up for hostage trades, does it? there's also the fact that the afghani taliban isnt on our official foreign terrorist list (although that's surprising to me)

but i think the fact remains that getting back our POWs is SOP, and it doesnt and shouldnt matter what the specific story is here-- we're leaving the country soon, and theyre retrieving the POW. besides, we can't just hold everyone at gitmo indefinitely (...right?) so i wouldnt be surprised if this was simply using a bargaining chip that would need to be disposed of in the nearish future anyway.

Nobody "deserves to die" in the line of duty, but those 5 men knew they were risking death when they joined up. It's their job. We can get into the whole moral debate about the worth of one human life in comparison to another but if you're a soldier you take orders. Who are we to judge? Yeah, it sucks that soldiers died but it's war. People die. It's not perfect.

So who's bright idea was it to give up 5 high ranking Taliban guys for 1 deserter?

Makes sense if you don't think about it.

Seeing as I was in middle school when bush started being president, I didn't know shit nor did I care. Obama has been the only president I have seen as an adult. I'm also not a fucking idiot and realize the president doesn't have control over everything. These kids listen to their parents bitch about politics, assume the president is the all controlling leader and think its "cool" to hate the president, when in reality they are just regurgitating bullshit they read on buzzfeed.

Yeah, but the president is the one who has to be held the most accountable. I realize how much control congress also has, but overall the president needs to be our leader.

That trade certainly doesn't sit right with me. Maybe 1 but certainly not 5.

I agree but I don't think the hate train is any worse than the hype train when he was running. Presidents don't control everything but that doesn't mean the ones we keep picking don't blow.

Might as well get some jams up in this thread though.

I'm super curious about this. And why he left, the article I read said that he sounded kind of suicidal in his letters or something. It's just weird to me that they weren't going to save him, and then they trade 5 taliban for him. Sounds almost like something more is going on. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say/how this carries out after he recovers.

Deserting your unit in a time of war to go to the otherside would generally be considered treason.

There are a lot of unkowns, and fishey circumstances involving this case.

I really don't use a filter with my opinions and the things I share, yet I would be embarrassed to state some of the things that have been said so far in this thread. That is all.

re: desertion being considered treason-- no, i don't believe that's the case and i couldn't find anything to corroborate what you said. desertion is desertion, it could become treason if you do something treasonous after deserting, but nothing shows that to necessarily be the case here. im not saying there's no way he did something treasonous at any point, but to you people claiming treason and saying it is a reason to not retrieve him as a POW, you are way off the ball here

yes, lots of unknowns and fishiness here, but some people here are very passionate and obstinate about their opinion here considering how little they know (facts about what happened, the definition of treason, the legality of the swap, US military protocol, the list goes on).

"it will be up to the ARMY to decide whether to reopen the investigation officially." [my emphasis]

there you have it. until then, this is a US POW soldier who is being retrieved at the end of a war, as our credo goes. the fact that some of you think this should be an exception on extremely unclear details makes me think you arent fully thinking this through and are viewing it as more of a partisan debate

No but other uniformed people in this thread are saying that.

And I agree with rubbersoul, desertion=/=treason. ever. They are two totally different things.

no, you didn't say that, youve hardly said anything and didn't commit to almost anything in your post, which makes it very easy to weasel out of arguing anything.

stick with the vague condescension, that seems to be your ticket

I think the point of my post was that being specific at this time is a bit rash.

I stand by my comment that deserting your unit with intent to seek out and join the enemy would constitute an act of treason.
