Fly fishing is taking over

Found the top half of my fly rod. What a fuckin relief.

Damn Stamos, losin my rod don't sound bad after hearing about breaking your grandfather's. That sucks.

I put it to good use yesterday too and caught dinner. First one I've kept and ate all year. I usually eat a couple throughout the season.

Got him late as shit too. Couldn't see a damn thing as it had gotten dark but they were hittin all around me. I just threw on a chunky fly and threw it about 12 feet away from me. I'd lif the fly line off the surface and just skate the fly across the top of the water so it made a little wake. Boy that fucker hit it good, totally surprised me it was a big ole brown. Well 11 inches or so but that ain't bad for a fish out of a creek that's like 8 feet wide.

It was late and dark so I figured rather than mess around in the dark I'd just toss him in the beer cooler on ice. Not a bad monday night snack. Super simple, just fried him up in a pan with some butter, cracked pepper, lime juice and a dab or two of old bay.
 
Now, like right now. Hell tie a piece of line and a fly to a bamboo shoot if you have to. Just get out there and enjoy.

But seriously, spring summer and fall are probably the best times. warm weather brings out the bugs and that's what they're eating. You can catch em year round if you're good though. I however am not good ha.
 
Been heading south to salida and eleven mile a good bit recently and been able to throw dries most of the day. heres a pretty nice rainbow from the arkansas last week, caught on a size 20 BWO emerger View attachment 635523also thought i would throw in this black grouper i got around thanksgiving in key largo while tarpon fishing View attachment 635524
 
Nice Grouper. My goal is to saltwater fly fish a bit more this year in the surf and the delaware bay.

Stayed on the big pine key a few years back, even had a fly rod, but I was just fucking around on my own and didn't even get a bite. Saw a bunch of tarpon though. I was down in May.
 
Fuck this I quit.

Rod tip flew off yesterday while casting. Right into a deep pool in the creek. Spent an hour and a half after dark wading with a mag light. Going back today but the water is rising as I type.

I give up until I can learn how to have nice things.....

Dry Fly I get paid tomorrow so I should send your rod piece out then.
 
Jesus dude, you just can't win!

I have a feeling that if you stick with it, you're going to catch the fish of a lifetime this season.

Maybe try a snorkel?
 
Oh trust me man, if I had a snorkel and mask last night I never would have left the creek. It's still tempting today but I think the rain down here is gonna cloud the water. I'm goin back to try anyway though.

meh, to be honest I've caught more trout these last few weeks on the fly than I have in my entire years of fishing. So actually I'm having a stellar year so far. It's just equipment problems that are pissing me off, and hell that might just be because I'm actually fly fishing just about every single day so I really can't complain. And at least one of them was for sure my own fault due to liquid refreshment consumption.

 
I follow a fly fishing forum down here in PA called paflyfish.com. They have a warm water/saltwater section and a few of the guys regularly fish for pike/pickeral/musky. They have some damn good luck too. can't imagine throwin a steel leader and 8 inch streamer though on a fly rod.
 
hey at this point I'm not taking any chances.

From here on out I'm spraypainting every fly rod I own blaze orange or neon yellow.
 
It is absolutely awesome. I got to go topwater fly fishing for pike once, and it totally blew away any day I've had fishing for trout. I'm not sure if I'd want to do it all the time, but watching a 48" pike blast a 10" fly off the surface is incredible.
 
I use my 5wt for bass fishing once they start hammering top water. They can literally take me for a ride in my kayak sometimes, super fun, but I'd imagine an 8 wt would be ideal to double up for saltwater. Can't go wrong with wrestling some hogs and seeing them jump
 
Nice that's what I've done in the past too.. those heavy poppers and big flies really should have a larger rod.. probably would be tits for casting
 
Yea the guys over there say you can see em chasing the lure before they hit. Sounds fuckin awesome.

So no snorkel needed. Found out yesterday that fly rod tips float, fuck me right?? Guess that thing is halfway to philly by now. I searched downstream about a half mile in all the bends, shallows, and tangles with no luck.

AAAAAAND the fuckin kicker........I found the tip to a bait fishing rod while I was out there. My heart jumped as I saw the shape of a rod tip, then sank when I noticed it was the wrong color. I think god is just laughing at me now.
 
went out today to the local trout pond, no luck, no sign anything in the water so i suspect it may have winter killed. I'm a little upset I don't think ill be returning to work up north, the streams are full of Greyling and tonnes of fun to catch.

on a side note, since I would still consider myself to be a beginner, whats a good fly for early still water rainbow trout fishing? any resources on fly selection someone with more experience could share

people always catching on late... been fly fishing for like 20 years now. Love it and havent gone in a year was actually going to hit the stream this weekend maybe!

Went fly fishing in Alaska a few years back, nothing like catching a salmon on a fly rod!
 
I'd imagine people in Central and western PA catch on to fly fishing a little earlier. It is one of the most historic fly fishing areas in our entire country.

I mean Joe frickin Humphreys taught at penn state for christ sake. Our state is legendary.
 
Heading up to Rangeley, ME for a 4 day trip with some friends. Should be a real good time. Can't wait to see some big brookies! Any one been on the Rapid before?
 
I'm going to Vancouver with my Family for 2 weeks this summer. My dad and I really want to go fishing there. Anybody here know what type of fishing is best there and whether you can rent stuff or not?
 
The hardest part will be not breaking things off when you set the hook. After that, just let the fish run whenever it wants, since you won't be able to force it to do anything.

Is there a reason why you need to use 7x? It's definitely not good for bigger fish to play them until they're exhausted, which is what you'll have to do in order to land anything sizeable with that.

On a separate note, does anyone else here build their own rods?
 
What kind of rods you guys throw?

My set up right now is a 9'6 6 weight sage VXP. Also have a 9 foot 5 weight Winston but I snapped the tip on that fricker into like 5 pieces and still haven't sent it in on warranty.
 
Browns aren't native to the US, they were brought over from Europe in the late 1800's.

Anyway, I've been getting a bunch of smallies this spring on black wooly buggers. It's pretty cool catching fish on flies you tie.

Curious to hear how everyone battles through run off?

Do you:

Head to a tailwater?

Hit smaller rivers?

Power through and fish what little soft water there is?

Throw bigger, brighter flies?
 
I'm from pennsylvania. What's this run-off you speak of???

Killed em on a 16 BWO yesterday. Brought 6 browns to hand in about 2 hours. along with countless fallfish, fuckin hate chubs, they're fighters though I'll give em that ha.

By run off you mean rain? I usually wait till the water isn't brown anymore since it is a bigger river.. I never have any luck after lots of rain, between water two going down and such..I have heard head to the tailwater which I should try
 
Runoff refers to the 2-5 week period where rivers rise dramatically as snow melts and it rains in the West.

Rivers will double or triple their usual CFS (volume), and it can quickly crush fishing productivity.
 
I cant wait to try fly flishing, just havent gotten around to it yet.

I mostly fish for largemouth, heres my little brother holding one of the biggest that we caught last summer.

I had a crappy scale in my backpack that we used..weighed in around 10.9. And to the guy above, my brother was 5 foot 7 in that pic, so no optical illusion..the bass was truly that big haha
