Yeah man sick steelhead! I've been out a bunch recently cuz a torn LCL so its been the only way to get some great time outside.

My good friend and solid NS member Benji. went to Alaska this summer fly-fishing. He has some incredible pics from the trip. Hopfully he sees this thread and posts a few.

while chasing the big ones is a blast, theres something amazing about just getting up into the high mountains and finding tiny lakes filled with fish. Found a lake last year that wasn't even on the map that had the fastest fishing I've ever experienced and I got a grand slam in it.

I really enjoy both fly fishing and spin casting. Pending the area of course. Like lands said I was lucky enough to go up to AK this past summer fly fishing for Silvers, Dollys and big rainbows etc. on the Kanektok while camped right near Quinhagak. This fishing was incredible... to say the LEAST.

Here are a few pictures if you're interested:

The big silver there was the biggest fish of the week.

If anything I'm glad fly fishing is taking over. Its a purer sport and requires far more skill than normal fishing. Its a blast too.

that video was top notch.

We got out on the Niagara River the other day. Lakers Browns and Steelhead all on the same water. Awesome day. heres a couple pics. Gotta love February open water.

Screaming reels!

Love fishing the fly, I had a great holiday in Norway recently fishing for Atlantic salmon, my watercraft is pretty good (sick brag, /claim) and I fished an upstream Francis nymph with sick results. Biggest one I had for the week was 27lb, but lost much bigger including one which took me 150 yards into my backing and down through 2 pools. Don't know how they come off sometimes! On mobile, but will be back with photos soon!!

Shit Fiske!

Caught this fish once:

Not a huge claim though, it was on one of those fishing tours with crew to do all the dirty work.

Each can be fun in the right time or place IMO. I was raised baitfishing though so I might be biased.

Fly fishing can be great to just change things up or feel super in tune with the fish and stream. I'm not huge into the science of it yet but there is something very fun about packing light with just a few extras, flybox, rod and net. Hiking up backwoods streams that light makes for an incredible day and adventure.

I fly fished a ton this summer just using wooden poppers on the top. It was fun as hell and I caught all types of fish including a largemouth in a pond that was probably 20" and fat. There's no feeling like watching em slowly creep up to the surface and just suck your fly in ever so gently. I was shitting bricks watching that guy come at my popper.

On the other hand I also love to surf fish with bait at the beach and just set out like three rods and kick back with a beer and watch the tips. I'll even clip on bells and just throw a game of horseshoes while catchin snapper blues sometimes.

I enjoy flyfishing, and certainly have a lot to learn at it, but I don't yet see it as the end all be all of fishing.

Personally if I had a child or a friend that wanted to start fishing I'd start em on bait, unless they really had a drive to learn fly fishing for some reason. That's just my opinion though.

Not really. I love fly fishing but I prefer baitcasting (it's what I grew up on), and the largest fish are GENERALLY caught on traditional fishing setups (spinning gear, baitcasters, etc.)

Fly fishing is more of an experience. Id rather fly fish for a day and catch a bunch of tiny trout then catching one or two nice sized trout. Plus fly fishing streams > lakes

Can't really say that until you've ice fished though.

I try and go out 2x a week during the winter starting around December when there is 4 inches (Yes, we're crazy in CT) Then possibly into early April up in the mountain area ponds where it stays a bit colder for a bit longer.. We're at about a foot right now in NW Connecticut and its melting slowly. I'm entered in an ice fishing derby tomorrow up in MA so I hope I can win some big bucks... I'll post in here if I win.

But I also find just bait casting really fun too, in lakes, streams, everywhere... I have a lake behind my house so in the summer i'm out there every day, the cool thing is sometimes I get surprised by the things I see/catch out there, that's the great thing about fishing.

Ocean fishing is also the bomb too, whether it be surf casting off of shore, bottom fishing off my neighbors huge boat, off of peirs, or trawling from the back of a boat. I find all kinds of fishing fun as hell. I've learned so much things from fishing and nothing beats being alone out in the middle of the woods catching fish that have never been caught before.

Not really into that fishing guide shit though.

Some of my fish from early summer last year, don't really take pics much, just catch and let em back, that's the best part. Don't have any LMB pics from the backyard :(

Haha thanks man, here is the other Pike I was talking about... It was a wild fight for him and took a while to fit thru the hole because it was pretty long, can't wait for this weekend because we know the good spot now! ICE FISHING FTW

Ice fishing is a ton of waiting out in the cold and it really sucks if the fish don't bite. Fly Fishing is far better.

Well I mean ice fishing like all other types has its good or bad days, last week I was at the same lake and we caught one fish the whole day between my dad and I... And it was in the last 10 minutes we were there (7AM-1:30PM)

This past weekend we got about 10 fish between 3 people, by Connecticut law you can have 6 hooks in the water, so pretty much 6 tip ups or 5 and 1 jigging rod.

Do the math haha! More hooks in the water=better chance of catching fish. It seems in ice fishing you lose quite a larger amount of fish, because how the bait is rigged and what not... But that's the fun of it. This year is crazy, still over a foot at the lake we're going to, when we were done last year at this time. But all the other places in CT we go to are open water with bass boats on them, it's pretty ridiculous.

But it has to do with the elevation the lake has, it's around 1,300 ft above sea level.... Pussy shit I know, but for CT it's decent. And the ice freezes thicker when the elevation is higher, so there are still sleds and dirtbikes ripping around on the ice when 30 minutes away its fully open water with no ice in sight.

Longest post I've had on NS whaattt? And I tried making it as short as possible.

Last weekend it was 55 and sunny I have a huge tan from it haha.... But this weekend it was like 20 with windchill, it was pretty fuckin cold. You don't HAVE to go out when it's cold

but i do

Sorry for the wall of text:
I've decided to take up (Casual) fishing this summer. I have been fishing before, but I don't know much about it. Could anybody here tell me what type of fishing rod/hooks/bait/accessories/hats/beer/whatever I should grab and what type of fishing would be funnest/most effective?
I live by a deep lake in Switzerland and I always see people standing at the shore/edge and fishing. There are also a bunch of bridges that people fish off.
Also I have no idea if you can buy collapsable fishing rods and/or if they're any good, but portability is a big plus. I'd lake to be able to ride a bike or skateboard with all the fishing equipment.
Here is a list of fish that can be found & are allowed to be fished in the lake:

Here's what the lake looks like, idk why I'm even including this but it might be helpful.

And here's a picture I just found of some random guys fishing in the lake:

And this is the place I hang out in the summer where people often fish:

Hope some of you guys can advise me :)

Go with an ugly stik rod... They can also be broken down from the middle by pulling on it.. But I don't do that.

Sorry but I just got back from 6+ hours of skiing and I read like a paragraph of that you can ask me questions if you want, I don't know anything about fly fishing to be honest so don't ask any of that stuff.

Fly fishing for me doubles as a form of meditation. Everybody is different and has there way to get to that point when they can just relax and take a break from life. It is the feeling of being away from society (especially because the best fishing spots have no cell phone service) and being able to put all my focus into something I love, catching fish. It is not about the numbers, or catching 3-1 fish on a spincast, fly fishers share a closer relationship with the fish and it's habitat, this is very true for trout anglers because trout are so picky... And when everything comes together, the hatch is matched, my fly is turning over just right, the wind is not a factor, just me, my gear, and nature is when I am able to get to that point of figuring out what life is really all about... There is so much on my mind that needs to be hashed out, and it is ironic that adding all these fishing variables is what helps a fly fisher relax, but it just works.. The days of chasing aggresive fish with lures is fun a few times a summer, especially when the time is cut short. However, once I caught a trout on the fly I have never stopped thinking about the next hatch..

It can def be related to tele-skiing if that is what gets you to your point of everything seeming clear... repetetion, like the fly fishing cast, or the motions of tele skiing become ones form of mediation, similar to yoga...

I'm glad people took the time to answer my question instead of just thinking I was being a dick. I am looking forward to getting a basic setup so I can try it this year.

I'd suggest picking up a few fly poppers or streamers on top of any of the bug type flies you end up getting. It'll expand where you can use the rod and what you catch. I slacked on trout fishing last year but killed the bass on local ponds just by stripping poppers across the surface.

Not fly fishing but I threw on a tiny hook and some waxworms yesterday and discovered a small stream by my buddy's house has native trout in it. Caught one at maybe 7 inches and one at about 3 inches, tiny little bugger but she was gorgeous.
