Fly fishing is taking over

Sulphurs are fuckin blowing up around me right now. Clouds so thick you can hardly walk through em I swear. Stayed on the water past dark and it's like the fuckin creek was boiling there was so much top action. Of course I don't have any fucking sulphur flies. I need a damn vise and to start tying. Had minimal luck with march brown and light cahills though.

Got a few free flies from a buddy on memorial day just cause we were shooting the shit about fly fishing. Dude hooked me up with 3 sculpin flies. Holy fuck if you don't know what this is fucking google it and get a few for when they're not hitting the surface. First cast I had something hammer it super hard but I missed the hookup. Apparently trout fucking hate sculpin with a passion as they like to eat the trout fry while feeding on the bottom.

Not flyfishing but heres a few bass i got over the past week

Thirded on the spinfishing thread, I don't wanna see pig bass unless you got em on a big bugger or popper or something.(not tryin to be a dick, I've been spin fishing some lately actually ha)

That's awesome SFB, I just became a member of my local TU chapter and look forward to getting out and doing some kind of volunteer work. They do TIC here where they let kids in schools raise trout that they then take outdoors and stock the streams with. Along with stream restorations and shit too.

Haven't been out flyfishing much lately. Just reading a bunch and scoping some local streams. Looking to secure a used or cheap vise for tying if anyone in here has one they can let go for a decent price.

Lets keep it fly fishing in here. Bait casting and spinning is all good and well but this isn't the thread to post it in.

Thanks.

recently just started fly fishing, its definitely the most effective way to catch trout, and nothing beats wading into cold water on a nice hot day and catching some fish.

Just made a spin fishing thread so you guys can keep your purism up to par:

https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/749771/

D'awwwww... Freakin' Kessler haha, dogs got the LIFE!

I love it when I See that irie rasta dog copilot icon pic floating around the internet- I bet the kiddies rocking here it have no idea that he's your furkid.

There are hours and hours of free content on the internet that can turn you into a knowledgable fly fisherman...

or craigslist to sell them..

the dude that penned my sig puts out a flyfishin quartely mag and there's a forum pretty similiar to tgr cept way harsher on noobs, but killer pics and trs from serious fly fishing addicts the fridays cheer thread is a good 500 pages of quality fly fish porn. Not a whole lot of active members so it can be fratish. Definately not the place to find super helpful people willing to offer advice and answer questions

Your local tu chapter is a great place to do that. Ours does intro classes, tying etc as well as trips. Stoked we're headed to the green this weekend

4 me it aint so much about purism

I'd noodle naked if i wanted to be pure

as a way cool skill/addiction

I'm generally stoked on anyone fishing

that fish hounds floated his share of rivers. I can't believe he's 7 1/2 seems like just a year ago or so I was questioning the wisdom of taking an 11 month old puppy down the middle fork of the salmon
Middle_Fork_of_the_Salmon_Ri1.jpg

but he rocked it. Was a cast and blast trip and he came back gun shy and a puss about thunder/fireworks

he's slowin down quite a bit. been sleepin in for dawn patrol, nappin a lot more , but he stillgets stoked to hear fish on and get his sniff on

Thanks Noobswhacker, looks like some great stuff over there and I just scratched the surface. Definitely has a pull no punches feel like TGR. I'm sure I'll lurk there for about 2 years or so before I ever post anything ha.

Started a fishing cult, open invite and open cult so join up if you want. Figured we could use a place to keep and share all different kinds of fishing stoke.

https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/cult/forum/cat_id/6462/

I'd also feel way better if an actual fly fisherman started up a fly fishing thread, I'd feel like an impostor doing it myself.

Had the pleasure of cruising up to Las Montanas Friday after a nice post work (afternoon) session at Upslope. Figured I'd roll through and provide some thoughts and encouragement for ya'll.

Saturday brought my buddy and I to the Colorado[/u] - sadly boatless and looking to avoid the armada of rafters we headed up into Gore Canyon. Now when I say up I mean all the way up, and on the West side. Which happens to mean the Colorado river is really low (~550 CFS at Pumphouse).

We worked our way up and had limited success on your standard Colorado canyon nymph rigs. With the water so low the larger fish are holed up real tight to structure and very wary. Hooked into a few nicer fish that were straight into the main current once on, and sadly lost.

As the day progressed we moved over to dry flies and I was pleasantly surprised. Haven't had much luck in the past on dries in the canyon but plenty of sub 16 inch browns and a larger rainbow were all willing. Larger attractor patterns, skittered EZ Caddis and ant/beatles all cleaned up.

Upon reaching the top (railroad tunnel) we turned around and used the evening cloud cover to throw streamers on our way down. Brought a few more larger fish to hand though nothing to scream about. All in all a great day and I'd highly recommend the area right now.

Sunday, and it was off to the Arkansas.[/u]

Save you (me
tongue.gif
)) the location but the Ark is coming down quick and fishing's great. Again, the larger fish haven't spread out so they were all tucked tight to and under banks that were in 4 feet or deeper.

What I love about the Ark is the amount of good water it holds. You could spend hours on just a few hundred yards, or in my case blast through miles searching out those fat Cutthroats that have worked there way in.

Speaking of - anyone know the story behind them?

Sorry for a lack of pictures but just wanted to throw some words and encouragement out. Great fishing up in the mountains these days and I felt privileged to get out.

Tight lines.

do any of you use the site Flybc.ca or fishbc.ca >???

its the best fly fishing forum around pretty much and its very active and resourceful

Still been after the smallies in the river

Also encountered some really interesting fish recently. First is a silver lamprey, they're spawning in the same river as the smallies. They use their mouths as suctions to move rocks to build their nests. They live in the lake and feed on lake trout and landlocked salmon (mostly), but don't kill the fish like the sea lamprey does. I caught this guy in my landing net in a foot of water.

Next is a freshwater drum, also called sheepshead. They pretty common in the lake, but I'd never caught one before. They have the longest north-south distribution of any fish in north america, and are the only fish that eat invasive zebra mussels. I caught this one at the mouth of the same river where I go for smallies.

Very very jealous of these big ass west coast browns.

Damn skifishbum, looks like you're fucking livin the dream out there man. Well done indeed.

Fuck it, I'm gunna start fly fishing.

Been doing a bunch of reading and going to buy an outfit when I'm in Vancouver next week.

Speaking of fly fishing, I'm going today. Currently up in Montana and will be fishing in a few rivers in Yellowstone. Can't wait.

Just landed my first fish on a fly rod!! I'm beyond stoked, it was an 8" Rainbow.

Never fishing with bait again haha, this was infinitely funner!

Congrats dude! It will be very hard too go back now and ever use a spin rod. Just can't compare unless you are saltwater fishing...

Haha true that, I went salmon fishing in the pacific for the first time last week, it was really fun, but no way near as peaceful as fly fishing.

These holidays have treated us well fishing-wise. My dad even got a 30 lb king Salmon on his first bite.

Just been getting into targeting stripers on the fly. So damn fun and addictive. This was the 2nd I've picked up. It was 30" on the nose, first was 16-17". My outings have been pretty hit or miss but even getting skunked isn't bad when its a beautiful day.

Just coughs my first fish when I was in Wyoming. It was an 8" brooke. I don't think I ever want to "traditional" fish again because fly fishing is so much more fun.

Holy frick Skodeo. Nice striper for sure. Wish I lived up there where they hang out all summer. I gotta wait for spring and fall while theyre passing thru. I fish the surf in Delaware. Also, that pic is 100 cooler with the ominous looking clouds in the background.

Skifishbum, was that your neck the fly caught? How did they flip the pontoon boat?? What is that stucco looking shit, is that on your boat??

I love pictures that ask questions ha.

Well done all, keep em coming. Charged up the gopro, I gotta get some pics soon.
