Fly fishing is taking over

That is what was in the brown trout's stomach my buddy caught out of the neversink river in NY... appears to be tons of hendricksons and/or caddis

Not sure what the fly was, I just kinda point and nod at the fly shop ha.
 
ah my young grasshopper one does not measure what most of us fly junkies consider a lifelong journey of learning the such a soul feeding skillfull and rich historied craft of the pursuit of the fishes with flies by the # or even species caught.

Thats like saying the lift ridin bros outvert/ski you and I know the bc has inhabbited a part of your soul

It aint just about the catchin that's just the bonus for doin shit right and the positive reinforcement that keeps us casting.and continuing to attempt to master our chosen craft.

it aint so much bout the destination but the places and people the journey takes you on and flyfishing places and the peeps are some of lifes best

Dry flybro pretty muched nailed it all I can add is line control is everything in fly fishing. Rods and reels are just tools to assist. Line control determines your ability to cast from big junk to a tiny #22 midge. It allows you to present concotions of feathur, fur, foam or whatever materials you can attach to a hook in a manner that may entice your quarry to injest. Line control then will most likely deterine whether the hook gets set or you can control the fishes given your tippet leader choice that also tends to corespond with whether a more edjumacated prey may be enticed to your offering.

Factor in entamology, the ability to read water, determine currents, likely fishholding lies, or our arch enemy the wind and you can easily see a craft/skill that allows for several lifetimes of learning.Get into a drift boat or flats boat and it becomes a team sport as the rower/poler works to position the boat in a manner condusive to the caster/s makin good presintations.

I'd be amiss if I didn't tell ya it's the crack cocaine of fishin get hooked and it'll make $$$$ fly out of the account faster then those tweakers that found your wallet. It'll make ya forsake a lot of other things and haunt your dreams kind of like turn earnin does

The cool thing is it can be as diverse and complicated as you desire from a simple 4 or 5 weight and a dozen flies to spey to tenkara you fish on your terms.

Caught this little guy and a couple of others, about 2-3 inches bigger the other day in upstate NY. Was using an elk hair caddis because whatever fly was hatching I didnt have a match. They're stocked trout, but still fun to catch, especially with the water levels so screwed up recently. About that time for the flies to come full force and I plan on going down to the Cohocton River as a very reliable source told me they are stocking 3-4 year browns soon.
 
my rod broke today :/ it is a 4 piece redington, i should have had it in the case but didn't and it closed in the car door...

Anybody have a 5 wt. they can sell? last resort maybe a 4 or 6wt?
 
ha that sucks. I broke my four piece redington last week just fucking casting. Snapped right above the cork. fucking BS. Picked up another cheap four piece and reel for like 70 bones. It even fits in my redington case ha.
 
Going to camp along the Metolius River this weekend and try fly fishing for the first time in my life. Using equipment my grandpa gave me from the 70s... Any tips?
 
go to orvis' website or like em on facebook. They have a bunch of short videos on their site about different tips on different types of fly fishing. On your presentation, stop that forward cast about eye level then slowly lower your rod tip as the fly falls. If your tip drops too low on your forward cast your fly will crash land and slap the water as the poster above me said.
 
Fished the COlorado between State Bridge and Rancho last week.

Found a new quality entrance that gets you away from crowds and enjoyed a serene day on the river with very few others around. Change of pace from the summer madness that consumes the area.

River is getting cloudy as the day goes on and the melt increases. Fishing was best from 9 to 1 and then drastically slowed - should have switched over to some meat (streamer) once it got dark but I was stubborn.

Watched a nice brown nose bump a small orange leaf so I switched up the whole rig just to get at him. First Brown of the year on a dry (orange Madam X)
 
if you consistantly want to catch trout on western rivers specially as a noobs learn how to nymph.

90% of their diet/feeding occurs under water with very little exertion of energy

You dont need to be nearly as proficiant at casting,,although being able to water haul and roll cast a bit will make things easier. Use the river currents and feed line get your flies down in the strike zone and leve em their that river runs through it false casting and being able to cast is cool and will come in time or with practice, but the ability to visualize where your nymphs are and should be and how to mend/control the line to make that happen is clutch if more catching is your goal.

Don't use grandpas leaders or tippet buy new. the bennies of flouro out weigh the extra costs imo check your leader often and retie if nicked or bad casting/wind knots tie good knots is a given.

other than that observe a lot be it clues to, aquatic insect activity, or feeding fish to how others are or aren't gettin em.

 
just lost the biggest bass I would of ever caught.... Took the lure and everything.... Time to order more tonight. Honestly that's what I get for tieing a shit knot...... And I put the rod in the kayak for 5 seconds to turn the scale on to weigh the fucking hawg..... She jumped twice so I got a really nice look... Done fishing until I replace my lost lure... DAMNIT.

At least I get to miss school tomorrow for some deep sea fishing.
 
What lure? And you can't ever trust a shit knot haha, it's a mistake you'll only make once in your life as the snap of the line makes your heart sink
 
It was my rapala original floating minnow, 6 hooked one. Dude I am still beyond rattled.... As soon as the line snapped I just paddled home, honestly not going back until I get my $$$ lure back, I was catching just small pickerel and bass all day and this was my chance, blew it. Would of been the first big one of the year, not including ice fishing. THING WAS A BEAUT! I felt its head shake underwater and kind of knew it was over lol!
 
Totally trying to be an ass here, but why don't ya start a bass fishing is taking over thread. Unless you were chuckin that treble hook minnow lure with a fly rod.

No offense man, I do all kinds of fishing with all kinds of tackle. I just don't feel like wading through bass posts to get to all the good fly fishing posts ha. Wading.....eh...eh... see what I did there ;)

You and Dalt are the two who have gotten me wanting to try it the most, and this got me really wanting to get my feet wet so I think I'll probably check out getting a basic starter setup next week.

In other fishing news though, just stopped by my go-to spot and it's running low and slow- color me stoked. Total prime time since there's so many deep holes in the spillway that are impossible to get to when the water is high. Seeing as we aren't supposed to have any rain this weekend, Monday should absolutely kill it.

 
I believe so yes, 9 footer I think. Still got the pieces. I'm gonna break out the dremel, some wood dowling, and a gallon of epoxy and see if I can't get her back to working order of some kind. Might as well seeing as how I now have 3 reels and only one flyrod. bought a cheepo martin 8 foot 3/4 just so I didn't miss a day of fishing ha.

wait wait, you asking cause you're willing to part with the bottom of yours or you tryin to score the top of mine??? haha

Great to see! I've been fly fishing since I was old enough to walk up a stream. Anyone in here fish the Truckee or surrounding stream's??
 
The rivers have started coming up here, so I might have to drive all the way out to Bear Trap canyon to fish for a while. I guess I probably shouldn't bitch too much about fishing the Madison, but...I have to drive, like, 45 minutes.

In another few weeks we can probably take the boat out on Hebgen and troll wooly buggers for enormous rainbows, though. Life is pretty good in Montana.
 
Why not pick up a flyrod and get w/ the program?

You don't need no damn 6 hooked rapala to get the bucket mouths

That's true, might have to do that... I have all the fly fishing equipment, never learned though. Usually bait cast or use my stock pile of lures.
 
PA ain't so bad either. I do wanna visit my Step brother in Nevada and maybe hit up Utah though someday.

I've already written it off anyway and I have a bamboo fly rod I'm working on restoring so that should have my undivided attention anyway.
 
Yes NY has great rivers that hold great fish. Montana has legendary rivers that hold legendary fish. Not only that but you get the crazy nice views of mountains out west in the background. I have never been but from what I see it looks pretty nice. Not hating on NY at all, love this place, but there are wonders out there I havnt experienced and Montana's on my bucket list
 
Yeah it's just the whole experience. Fishing something you've never fished before, new environment, hatches, fish, technique. Sounds so god damn fun
 
yes i understand. NY has legendary rivers too. Look up the salmon river, the Delaware, the birth of American fly fishing on the neversink... The Adirondacks,finger lakes, the catskills etc
 
Caught an awesome native brown this weekend on my local creek. More like a brook, you could damn near jump across this creek. Must have been 12 or 13 inches. Smashed the surface about ten feet in front of me while I was drying off my fly so I dropped it right on top of him and he took. Caught it right in front of my buddy that fly fishes too and constantly tells me I'm lying cause he never catches trout out of that creek. He couldn't tell me I was lying about that one, I walked it right down in front of him as he was fishing just a couple feet away, landed the fucker right next to him ha.

Then the unthinkable happened. I threw my rod in the back of the truck and we both drove back to the house which is just across a field. Well I guess my rod wasn't tuckin in the back enough cause it snagged a tree(I think) and got hung up. I didn't see it happen, but when we hopped out of the truck only half my rod was there and my about half my backing was gone and the line extended half way through the field.

The good news is the rod isn't broken. so somewhere in that 4 hundred yards or so is where the top half of my fly rod is resting right now.

Also.....it's a dark green rod, the field is dark green winter wheat. it's like a fucking hay colored needle in a haystack. I'm not gonna give up til I find it though.
 
That's painfull. It sucks losing or breaking a fly rod. I've broke casting rods and oh well but fly roads hurt more. My grandpa gave me one of his customs and it had his name on it etc. I broke it the first tkmenj used it tugging a dry fly out of a tree. Ugh. Just gonna have a rod maker build me a matching top half in the future since I've still got out in a case. The first fly rodthat was my own broke before I even got to use it! Got to the stream set it up and it bent in half 6 inches up from the cork. Pain full. Now I've got a sage, lifetime warranty suckers! But the fish and the feel imprint on a rod and its like a magic wand, you connect to em. Good luck finding it!
