Enough dancing on rails

so, i'm over watching skiers slide rails... spin on, three switch ups, spin off... yea cool.

i'm going to switch over to the dark side and start jibbing on a board this year, 'cause sliding rails on skis is played out.

your thoughts?

nope youre wrong...you wanna know whats really played? saying that everything is played...get over it and have fun...

exactly...

Hes getting a condition from being stuck in the house all day, with no access to snow. We all know once it snows, he too will be dancing on rails

just where the limits of our equipment has taken us. because of our stance, its harder for us to press and do different types of slides than snowboarders. yeah, some skiers do presses, but you dont see it a ton anymore and it was never the same as snowboard presses. switch ups and spins in/out are our equivalent, and people are experimenting with other shit like stepovers and shit. we are limited by the abilities of our skis, people are exploring boundries, but until some new equipment breakthrough (rockered skis and super flacid skis help somewhat) presses wont be huge in skiing

Well I was about to post a video of JF Houle's nasty switch butter 270 he did in the Dew Tour last year but I can't find the video. So just remember that and get back to slaying rails on skis.

But multiple switch ups just look retarded. Get some style and they won't be necessary to win competitions.

2 problems with this

1: unless its a rail jam, rails dont matter in competition.

2: anyone can "have style" on rails. it takes 2 days of practice. having style WITH tricks is whats important, and 90 pretzel 90 isnt a trick, so it doesnt matter how stylie it is.

you're hating on it being played out, but I bet when you do 'dance around on rails' you think its fun, if you can, not doubting you tho. it's fun, thats the whole reason we do it, and why we ski.

I kind of agree in a way. the spinning and pretzeling is rediculously technicly hard, and fun to watch. but this year I'd love to see some really nice presses, or nollie switch up varitations.

if its a slopestyle comp...the rails still do matter...that plays a big part in the judging, thats why half the course is jump and half is rails/boxes.
and goin off on what kepler. said about jf's switch butter 2 onto the 6.0 rail at the dew tour..that was sooooo ill!! one of the gnarliest things ever! and i think that played a very big part in jf winnin first at the dew tour stop at mount snow, from throwin that trick out there. so there ya go, rails do matter in comps.oh and dude who wants to board..keep on skiin and just have fun with it!

You'd probably like this:

Unaffiliated from mikehornbeck on Vimeo.

Hornbeck is being sick without throwing quad switch ups.

Andy parry is a good example too.

this is like comparing inline grinds to skate grinds. you have a ton of inline grinds that are technical but look similar. skating you have more of straight rails and presses. not too much spinning in skating. if you ask me skiing and inline grinds have gotten a lot more techy with all the spins

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 90 PRETZEL 90.

A pretzel needs to have at least 180 degrees of rotation in one direction and then at least 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

can i borrow your universal newschool trick handbook?
....i seem to have misplaced mine

oooh i love when i see those kids in the park twirling around on the boxes like ballroom dancers! they're so graceful and elegant! they should try it on figure skates next time!!

I hate anything more than 2 switch ups on a given rail. Way too much dancing. Hornbeck and Casabon are the only real guys I see progressing the rail game in the right direction. Not hating on Andy Parrys stuff but I'd rather watch a bluntslide on a box than a hippie killer.

I board but am getting into skiing. I think rails are way more fun on skis especially urban but just a flat box, presses on a board with some variations are fun as hell.

So, let me get this straight. Because you're sick of seeing OTHER skiers dance on rails, you yourself are going to switch sports? WHy not just do what you want to do on skis?

Quit bitching and do something about it, take the sport in the direction you want to see it go.

'cause i've done the odd nose press, the odd tail press, the odd switch ups and spins on and offs... and it's not to say that I didn't have fun doing them... but when I ask myself, what do I want to try today? in terms of tricks on rails, I'm running out of ideas that are cool. sure, I could try and add another switch up, or another 180 to my spin on or off, but I think that 630 on's and 630 off's are, well... silly unless it's a big gap and you can make it look (and feel) good. add that to me watching the pros slide rails and they're doing 270 on, two or three switch ups to 450 off it's like... yea, ok.

now when i have a snowboard on my feet and a do a 50-50 and pull it out into a front board and think of the options I can do from there with a little practice - that makes me all excited... the options for tricks and technicality on a snowboard blows skiing out of the water for rail tricks, and i'm not saying that skiers have reached their peak for tricks on rails, but I'm pretty sure I have. I do like sliding rails, and don't want to loose that love, so I must switch to what to me, seams like the more appealing of sides.

*disclaimer* I live in BC, spend the majority of my winters skiing pow in the trees, and rails are for the days when the cliffs inbounds are bombed out and the avi conditions are little too spooky for my liking. not that skiing mellow trees is boring, but you know... when life gives you lemons... so i am not saying i will stop skiing, just stop hitting rails on skis.

harder not impossible just look at vincent gagnier presses the fuck out of everything. super sick.

Quoted for truthfulness.

Plus, I like dancing around on rails, probably cause rollerblading is my primary (I hate to say this) action sport.

You haven't been around NS long enough to know but there's been heated debates over what classifies as a pretzel.

Bcl is actually correct when he talks about the literal interpretation. A "pretzel" is a 270 on, stopping rotation and spinning 270 off the opposite direction. But I among other people consider a pretzel, the act of stopping your rotation and spinning the opposite direction out. Your amount of rotation isn't considered in our definition.

So we're both right! Kinda. But Bcl is just more correct, technically.

mutiple sw ups was out several yrs ago it looks like shit and it isnt hard to keep spinning and jumping, op spin out or not it all looks about he same and it should be dead

I have to agree with the thread creator. There's a point where switchups just start looking stupid. Especially when you stop sliding the rail, and just hop down it. Here's my thoughts:

Switch-up over a kink: good

Switch-up without ever moving your shoulders: bad

Late switchup (tap off) on a flat box/rail: good

4 switch-ups on a flat rail/box: bad

Backside switch-up: good

Flailing arms switch-up: bad

Switch-up, pretzel off: good

Buttered switch-up: good

Nollie switch-up: good

Even after re-reading your comment multiple times I still don't catch on to any sarcasm. You leave terrible context clues.
