Campbell, oh Campbell.

Haha, JD just PM'ed me, with a different prespective on what I said about your own opinion. It's an opinion so it might not techincally "incorrect", but might be highly uneducated and just plain stupid...

That statement on opinions was more so pointed to everyone that's been posting in here so far, due to espongs comment.

true. there is a huge variable that is going overlooked here though, and that is the quality of the ad being run. No matter where you put it, a shitty ad will not bring in as much business as the most impressive ad out there, so its hard to gauge.

Please as I write this dont think that I agree with everything he says but hes right about alot more than you guys are giving him credit for. And Tmorry stop guesstimating when it comes to the facts, you discredit your arguments and they are often good ones too.

Let me Draw your attention to :

"Our top athletes don’t need be making

less than team managers or marketing managers, because it’s their image that they market! It’s a huge catch-22"

Yes yes yes yes yes, skiing is one of the few remaining "action sports" (ew) where the athletes are still making less money than team managers for marketing managers on a professional level. Professional Skateboarders, Surfers, to an extent now snowboarders, and even rollerbladers are making at least the same amount of money yearly as thier team managers, while skiers in most cases make considerably less.

"A lot of European companies would love to manufacture your product, but you have to relinquish intellectual property, which would equate you no longer owning your technology. Therefore, we could very well see certain famous pro models being remade

under a different European ski name."

Has anyone taken a look at the new elan park ski? Its an ar5, while I didnt actually get a chance to measure it out it looks like its even from the same mold.

". I mean come on, you've only been making skis for 3 years now, and they've been doing it for much longer than that."

Come on now, most skis are shit and you know it - every time I go out to find myself a new pair (well, I can only afford used) its always making compromises. Be it cheap cap construction skis that lose all pop in a month or wonderfully well designed skis with pencil thin edges that almost feel like they were made to fall out uniformly, its not too hard to compete technically with the park skis that are out there right now and I would love to hear you give a solid argument on why the Mick D pro model is in any way inferior to a pair of Foils or Thrusters or whatever the fuck they are calling them.

No I dont love ninthward, but If someone from any other company stepped out and delivered this argument I would respond in the same way, could you say the same?

Don't read into that anyone. It's cleared up.

As for the opinion thing, I think the people who have been posting in here know their stuff, and understand whats happening, and we're not so much the target of Campbells "awakening". It's the average-joe freeskier who dosen't have all the information or has an altered idea of what's actually going on.

I just sent this over to JD...

"As for not having enough information and needing more transparency I couldn't agree more. When I first got into this debate or what have you, I looked around my library im in with some other students, a few freeskiers in here, and it sucks to say and sounds elitist by anymeans, but they have no idea what any of this would be about, they just think ninthward is sick and salomon sucks, or don't know the full information and hapenings. It sucks to see that since they're such an imporant roll in freeskiing. Kind of what Campbell and Anthony are both saying, in their own special way."

And anyone who doesnt belive what he says about freeskier magazine PLEASE call them up and ask for thier media kit. You might find yourself with quite the eye opener.

ninthward rocks man, i think ninthward is in top 3 of core compagny with 4frnt and armada and its kind of their first year, give them time to grow up

Yah, that was my only thing I was assuming, about the Dynastars...Wrong about the edge thickness, right on the "reinceforcement". And for that I already acknoledged my mistake.

Yes, Campbell does have good points, I will give him that without a doubt... but he went about saying them in a really blunt, not completly true way, and seemingly more directed at the person left in the dark...Eh?

Can anyone prove what he is saying isn't true? I would be surprised if someone in his position said shit like that in a public place and was making that shit up. Not saying he is not lying, but it would seem like someone in his position wouldn't make up shit and write about it in a public place.

True, but he is very loose with his wording, do you agree? It's left open and can be taken in plenty of ways. Plus some of it I really just do need more backing for..."Prove me wrong" and I'll believe it, I just want a little back-up. Word. Now I'm really going home. Cya all in a few hours.

You know poor old Rossignol got attacked, and if anyone read the Evan Raps story you'd know that they DID support him.

While his strenuous rehabilitation proceeded, you might have thought that Evan disappeared, but you’ve just been sleeping on him. His ski sponsor Rossignol has supported him through it all, and they deserve a huge amount of respect for that. Evan has been with them since the beginning, and they stuck with him when he injured himself, which is more than any of his other sponsors did.

“If it wasn’t for Rossi, I would not have had the funds to live during all those months of rehab. People can’t just do rehab like that, because people have to work. I owned a home through this whole thing, I had a mortgage payment every single month when I was hurt, and there were no months off. Without their support there’s no way I would have been able to go to Colorado for 4 months, or move to San Francisco for 6 months, it just wouldn’t have happened. Rossi is known to be a loyal company like that, and luckily they stuck with me through the

tough times.”

That isn't the work of an evil company that doesn't support our sport...

Would a smaller company be able to back someone through all of that?

I think you forgot a link for cult branding/advertising..

Which is something that we're all involved in right about.... now

http://www.ahundredmonkeys.com/allaboutbranding-article.html

sorry if this is off on a tangent..

I'll highlight a few points and since I don't know this guy, I'll either guess that he paid attention in marketing class, or he's incredibly bright for following another companies business model for cult branding.

---

#3 - Stuck for an approach? Option 1: battle the mainstream. There's nothing like controversy, outrage and conventional disapproval to project your idea into the loving arms of those looking for the alternative. Often it's a case of the ruder, the better. Eminem made one snide remark about Brittany Spears and it was cash the cheques time!

#5 BYO attitude. Cults feed themselves with attitude and quiet self belief, but the brand needs to feel effortless and natural

#7 Limit your ambitions. Cult brands are powerful because they retain a sense of small, special and exclusive, no matter how successful they may become. If you are seen or sensed to have sold out, or if suddenly your brand doesn't ring true, it's game over.

#8 Get the right media play. Cult brands unashamedly leverage press coverage and viral marketing networks.

#10 Don't try to be popular. Cult brands don't. In fact, some are deliberately obscure. A cult brand is unassuming, unapologetic and on the hunt for like minds. If customers don't get it, don't convince them. Don't even try -- or you'll sink your credibility.

"Kids don’t realize that when you pay $300 for a pro model, that company is probably buying that pro model for $30. Kids aren’t getting a break."

Wait, aren't your skis some of the most expensive out there? How come you're not giving kids a break if your shit only costs $30 bucks to make?

I enjoyed that.

Sorry but i kinda want to bring this up, and ill make it really simple.

Not paying for adspace and screwing over a company is just low. Contract or not.

Yah to steal my signature you biter!

And in the words of Melvs(p.s. glad we're seeing eye to eye)...zing.

I second that... I liked what he said throughout the article... but the fact is that 9s cost even more then 'name brand' skis.

funny how every other thread about ninthward has gotten deleted.....and there is pobviously not a lack of Mods in this thread....good shit tho

I would just like to say that being a "corporation" does not imply any kind of EVIL activities. Its a different tax status, as well as a different way you can manage your money. A single guy designing websites in his basement can legally be a "corporation". I just thought it was annoying how campbell kept bashing "corporations".

heyyoo, just put in a littl enforcment on with doug bishop here. NS member answer these questions 1. how many times do you look at pg 34 of the septmeber issue of freeskier a day? 2. how many waking minutes do you spend on NS a day? more with # 2 right? internet advertising is the way to go in this tiny tiny freeskiing industry and its the way things are going and NS is right there with the best prices. i seriously dont know why more companies dont advertise on NS, there prices are rediculously cheap for the market they reach DAILY, not monthly, not on one page in a huge mag. soon the magazine prices will have to drop there prices, but for now, companies w/ smaller budgets bitch about, or do something about it. not many are yet however. example: most progressive company EVER cough..l*ne, stopped print ads, saves a bundle, puts it back into R&D for rad skis next year, booyaa.

OK, thats my 2 cents, go back to argument

LITTLE FUCKING BITCHS! SKIING IS FUCKING GAY JUST BECUASE OF FAGGOTS THAT CANT SKI LIKE THE DOUSCH THAT MADE THIS THREAD! CAMBELL FUCKING RIPS AND IS TRYING TO MAKE SKIING SOMTHING THAT POEPLE WILL ACTUALLY RESPECT NOT A GAY STIFFASS SPORT

GO SKIING FAGS! better worry about shit that dont matter and will never be solved. analyze every interview you can and find loop holes. that is indeed time well spent.

campbell is busting his ass to support us and you guys still shit on him..wow. there may not be as many of us as there should be but i for one support ninthward and sincerly thank u for supporting us, the skiers out there having good times.

it seems the only press Campbell is allowed to have on newschoolers is bad press :(. When cream came out i made a pro-Campbell thread and it got deleted right away.

if you keep your mouth shut, people can only think that you're an idiot. It's when you open your mouth that you can remove all doubt about it.

he makes sick skis designed for newschool only, and will not sell out just to make extra. he wants to make sick freestyle skis and he'll do whatever it takes to do that, and that only. read what he has to say..he's backing us all the way and i have tons of respect for that.

Thank you for finally pointing that out so people can maybe decide to use the world proporly

i feel better skiing on something i know will be made out of the finest quality shit and not thrown together in a differnt country by a bunch of kids in sweat shops. that's doing something for me.

Amen...I am with Ninthward and Campbell all the way. He was stating his opinion on the industry, and he was fucking brave to say some of the things he said...and I actually agreed with most of the stuff he said.

its lame but i have to throw this in: ride what you want, dont care for the hype or the controversy over it. sure, i keep hearing bad rap about ninthward "image" and shit like that, but its just skiing and one should just ride the skis that he likes, personally, i think ninthwards graphics are dope (check 180 butterlicious at jibij.com), they have progressive ideas within the company (bamboo!) a solid team (max and tosh? cosco?!) what more could you ask? sure skis will break, but thats part of buying skis from a young company, there are mistakes at the beginning, im sure any of the older companies had the same problems when they first started out, and what do you expect when you buy a park ski? you think itll last forever and one day your kids will be skiing them? of course there gonna break, its like a skateboard, its common. besides all that, im gonna buy ninthwards this year because of the reasons above

Ok, first I dont know everything about the ski industry, but i still know a decent amount. By saying this, Cambell is making a bold statement that will not be forgotten and will change the face of ninthward if he sticks with it. Ninthward is not my favorite ski company, but I do belive that they are something totally different than all else. This could be good or bad, or neither. I think that being a small company is quite a disadvantage in this corperately run world. Cambell has a point that it is much easier for larger companys to get a consumer, and it is harder to be a small core company. However, smaller companies would NOT be able to exist without the start off of the larger companys. I may be wrong about this but Armada way backed by Elan. Salomon, k2, dynastar and rossignol started the current twin tip phase, kicking off Line, then line kicked all of these other new small freeski companys off. Line took the old designs and brought them to a new level, then to another level with fat freeskis. They are far ahead of the game and already advertising on the internet. Cambell chose freeskier to advertise, not a bad choice. I like freeskier as much as anyone. They have been here with us from the start. But with high speed internet freeskier may be overrun by sites like newschoolers. I dont like computers that much and would rather read a magazine but thats not true for everyone. Now, core shops are coming up. JIBIJ and D-Structure are two leaders of the core shop revolution. D-Structure also focuses on inline, a way to stay open year round, whereas JIBIJ stuck just with skiing. Both shops are ahead of the curve and advertising on the internet, perticularly newschoolers. Jibij has one uniqe feature, they manage to only carry core companys. Companys that care about our part of the sport. I belive that that will help our sport grow in a positive way and make core freeski a force to be reckoned with.

Well, thats my part might not make sense but im not an amazing writer.

yeah, that definately shows how strong he feels, to be able to stand up and state what he really feels to a large amount of people.. many company owners will not do that, you gotta give props to campbell...

let me just say how much 9th ward is hella gay. the whole time at the USASA nationals they were crapping on 4frnt around me because i ride for 4frnt. they hate 4frnt and it is there personal goal to steal all of 4s riders- they are hella gay. two weeks later i was chilling w/ sterbenz in utah and we talked about 9. he told me that he respected ninthward fully and had nothing against them. if a 4 rider is offered a better deal by ninthward then matt is totally cool w/ it. this happened w/ b devine and matt was fine with it and was happy for ninthward. so in return 9 keys his car at vegas. better skis are made by better people.
