I guess I'll bite and address a 3 year old post by the almighty Rowen (Sincerely).
The two party system, while many believe it to be "killing our country" is something that this country was set up to have, even though it may have been completely unintentional. The problem is that we vote by single-member districts and only a plurality is needed for victory (not majority). By establishing this, people began to form coalitions of similar ideas even though many of the ideas were different, some of the broad ideas were the same or similar in order to attract a larger base. A politician with specific ideals and runs independent rarely shares those ideals with a majority of America. Because of this two parties were formed on a guideline of ideas to reach a broader constituency and both sides recognized that in order to do this and have any hope at attaining an elected office, they would have to full under one of the two main parties. Remember, the goal of every politician, while they may legitimately want to help the country, is to get elected then reelected.
